Part 4
I hear a mechanical whir and then poof sound of his teleportation. He materializes, sitting in the pew a few feet in front of me, adjusting his watch. "Forgive me Frauline, you startled me. This place does not usually receive other visitors."
"I'm sorry I startled you at this late hour. I couldn't sleep. I needed to clear my head and conscience." I admitted humbly.
"Your prayer has moved me. For someone so beautiful and powerful you are so very humble." He stated as if still in disbelief. "You barely know us, yet you pray for our well being?"
I blush slightly at his words before the sting sets in, he wouldn't think me beautiful if he saw what I truly looked like, beneath the spell. "This surprises you?" I ask.
"If I may be honest, my romani frauline, what truly surprises me is to find another mutant with the faith." He states, big golden eyes staring at me. I step over to the pew and motion for permission to sit beside him. He nods and I do, propping my folded hands onto the next back rest in front of me. "I understand" I reply, staring ahead at the statue of the Son."Our very existence goes to prove the theory of evolution."
He cocked his head at me. "So why do you believe?"
I smiled, shaking my head. "I don't know, I just do." I bit my lip, deciding if I should continue this rather deep conversation with someone I just met. The moonlight hit his watch, I squinted my eyes at it, before I realized what it was. A holographic projector. I wasn't the only one hiding behind an illusion. There was something else about him... a strange vibe. Like he wasn't entirely human. Immediately I knew I could trust him.
"It's hard to explain, but... I feel his presence. He is watching over me, keeping me alive, keeping my safe, keeping me anything but dead."
"I feel the same." He adds quietly. There is more to it, I can tell.
I decide that if I want him to open up I'm going to have to as well. But something about him made me think it was going to be worth it. "I'm a mutant who manipulates magic... Not energy or life force like most mutants, but magic. I have a deeper connection to it. I can feel things. Life is not all random coincidence, I feel this." I say trying my best to hold back my accent. "It's a beautiful creation made by a loving creator. It can't all just be chance, I know this in my heart."
He listened silently.
"And then there is this..." I continue, pulling off my necklace and holding it up for him to see. "Your crucifix?" He questions examining it. "It's not just a necklace, it's very old, very powerful magic. Now if the person who created it did not believe, then why would it be in this shape?" I add as I put it back on.
"It is rather beautiful." He complimented.
"Why do you believe?" I ask.
"For the same reasons you do. I can feel a presence greater then my own." Then he suddenly shoots me a coy smile. "I also have it on very good authority that Christ was a mutant."
"Makes sense." I laugh. "Who's authority?" I ask curiously. He bites his lip, as if unsure if he wished to disclose it. "My father's." He answers cautiously. "Lets just say he looks very good for his age."
"So you are new here?" I ask. "To this team, I mean?" "Six months..." He answers.
He explains to me how he joined the team, then he explains a little bit of his backstory and we are both delighted when we realize that the other was once also part of a circus. When I ask him what he performed, he grew quiet for a second before hastily replying "Acrobat." We continue on talking about our wonderful childhoods in that amazing colourful world that is the circus. How excepting and loving everyone was, even the humans who knew something was different about us. As if in the blink of an eye the stars are beginning to fade from the sky as the morning approaches.
My head suddenly slumps onto his shoulder, I realize that I am indeed tired. He looks surprised at first but then suddenly becomes distracted by my hair. He strokes it gently with a gloved hand. "You have very beautiful hair." He compliments.
I feel at ease around him because I knew he was hiding his true form as well. "It's not really that color." I admit for the first time in my life. "Neither are my eyes." "No?" He asks a little surprised.
"We are both disguising our true selves." I state.
"What are you talking about?" He asks suddenly nervous, pulling away and looking at me.
"I don't look like this, I'm not pretty like this." I motion to my self sadly, shaking my head. "My mother was a witch, my father was a mutant. Or so I was told. I'm only half human, as I suspect you may be as well"
"How did you know?!?" He interrogates, sliding away from me. "It takes one to know one." I reply, biting my lip. "For you it's a wrist watch, for me it's a spell."
He stares at me oddly, as if trying to work out just how different I look. I sigh, preparing myself for his disappointment.
"Let the veil be lifted and normality become only a dream. Let the unseen become seen." I infant and light purple smoke engulfs me, dissolving the spell that surrounds my features. Bringing forth my true form.
I gulp as he stares, wide eyed as the purple color drains from its storage in my hair and eyes, finding its way back to my skin. Giving me back my violet complexion. My hair silver, and my eyes blue, becoming the only part of me that actually resembles a normal human.
"Your...." He starts. "A freak, I know..." I finish for him, eyes downcast.
"No!" He argues, sliding towards me and running a hand across my purple cheek. "I was going to say breathtaking." I let him stare, he has this dumbstruck smile on his face as he looks me up and down.
"All right." I Cut in. "Ive shown you mine, now you've got to show me yours."
His face falls, he suddenly looks scared. "Please?" I beg.
He sighs, caving in and standing up. He moves to the walk way between the pews at the front of the alter. His face falls as he reaches for his watch. "Ok, but you are not going to like what you see." He twists the watch and in a holographic blur I see his true form.
He's blue, not just blue but covered in short blue fur. My moth gapes as I stand up and walk around him. I can see now why the wolverine called him "Elf" He had pointed ears. I walk around him and low and behold a tail! He has the tail of a demon. That must be his other half! Curiously I reach out and pull on it.
"Ouch!" He cries in pain, his eyes which had been closed the whole time suddenly jerking open. Turning to face me.
"I'm sorry, I wanted to see if it had nerve endings." I say rather abruptly. "Well, Jah it does." He replies, pulling it into his hands and massaging it. His eyes downcast once more. He is as ashamed of his mutant body as I am. Though I think his form is incredibly unique, interesting and oddly beautiful.
"Well I can see why you wish to spend so much time in a church... Daemon." I tease in my native tongue.
He flinches. As if my words sting. I smile and close the distance between us. "Do you know that blue is my favorite color?" I ask, placing my hand on his jawline, stroking the fur."This is the way our creator made us. We should not be shamed by his work."
"But the others... The humans." He stuttered, clasping what I now see is a 3 fingered hand over my own. "We hide it from them out of necessity, but I think I've found someone I no longer wish to hide from..." I admit, slowly bringing my face closer to his, planting a gentle kiss on his lips. Liking the way his cashmere soft fur tickled my face.
I pull back to see the stunned expression on his beautiful face. He blinked several times, trying to process what just happened.
Suddenly warm arms were around my waist, pulling me closer. He kissed me sweetly, our lips moving in perfect rhythm with each other.
We pull back and just stare blankly at each other till the crow of a rooster snaps us out of the stupor.
"We better be going. The rest of the X-Men will be waking shortly." He suggests gently kissing me on the forehead. "Do you want me to teleport you so you do not have to walk?"
I smile "Do you not know? I am also a teleporter." I say stepping back and preparing to leave. "Goodnight mien Engel." He wishes In German.
"Goodnight meu Daemon." I whisper back in Romani
