Break Me Again
Chapter Twenty One - Break Me Again
I stifled a smile when Alec took the island seat next morning.
Don't be a creep, Scarlet.
"Morning," I muttered as I busied myself in collecting some bacon on my fork.
"Morning," He replied nonchalantly while typing something on his phone.
I stole a glance at him. He seemed to be in his serious work mode, frowning at his phone as usual. Sometimes, I pity the poor device.
He placed the phone down and started eating his breakfast.
"Alec?"
"Yes?"
"We're leaving tomorrow, right?"
"We are."
"So can we go somewhere today?"
He paused eating and looked up at me. "I've got work."
"After that?"
He thought for a moment.
"Please," I batted my eyelashes at him.
He raised a brow at me and opened his mouth to probably decline but the ringing of my phone cut him off.
I looked down and a smile formed on my lips.
"Hi, Lily," I spoke.
"Hey, Scar. How are you?"
"I'm good. You tell me."
Alec resumed eating while I talked on the phone.
"I'm awesome. You're coming back tomorrow, right?"
"Yep I am."
"Eeeep," I could hear her clapping her hands. "There's so much catching up to do. I don't care if it was your honeymoon but I want every single detail, okay? Like did you get lucky with that gown? Oh My God! I'm so excited to hear every-"
"Eww Lily. Shut up," I tried to make a face but found a blush forming on my cheeks, remembering that night, and Alec sitting right infront of me wasn't helping at all.
"Hey," She complained. "I helped you get ready. You owe me that."
"I'm sorry but I refuse to be your porn dictate," I rolled my eyes.
Alec cut a glance at me and I resisted the urge to slap myself.
Porn dictate? Seriously?
Could have said smut, bitch.
I offered him a smile but he just continued eating his breakfast.
"Aww you nasty little thing," She cooed into the phone and I rolled my eyes.
"Let's talk later, Lil," I gritted my teeth.
She burst out laughing. "Hold on for a sec, Scar. I called for something else."
"Oh. What is it?"
"What's up with your boyfriend?"
"My boyfriend?"
Alec looked up at me.
"I mean your ex boyfriend, Scar."
"Ben?"
My eyes grew wide for a moment, realizing that I was giving Alec a wrong idea.
His eye twitched while my mouth opened slightly, not knowing what to say.
"Uhh what about him?" I asked.
"He's acting weird. Completely ignoring me and Mark in college. I think you should talk to him, once you get back here ofcourse."
I cleared my throat. "Yeah I will."
"And Scarlet, please don't do it over text."
I sighed. "I know."
"Thank you."
"Why are you thanking me?"
"Because I pity him. No one deserves a break up over text."
I squirmed in my seat, not because of the conversation but because of a pair of eyes glaring my way.
"Um okay....I'll meet him," I spoke dismissively.
She let out a breath. "Okay. Have a good journey with the hotshot. See you tomorrow."
A laugh escaped my lips.
Hotshot.
"Bye, Lily," I hung up and placed my phone on the island, slowly lifting my gaze up to match with his.
"Uh that was Lily, my best friend-"
"What did you have in mind?" His deep voice cut me off.
I stared at him in confusion. "What?"
"You said you wanted to go out. What place do you have in mind?"
I blinked at him for a moment. Was he serious?
He raised an impatient brow and I cleared my throat, saying the first thing that came to my mind since I hadn't thought this through.
"Umm The Boardwalk?"
He nodded. "Okay."
I blinked at him. "Really?"
"Do you want to go or not?"
"Yes. Yes ofcourse, I do," I said abruptly.
After breakfast, we left for his meeting and I wish he hadn't failed to mention that he had four meetings today.
By the time he was done, I had dozed off a couple of times in the waiting room and it was evening already.
I was exhausted and even considered not going to the boardwalk anymore but the moment Alec told Kyle to drive us there, I was excited once again.
The sky was getting darker and when Kyle parked the car, I couldn't help but be astonished by the beautiful lights illuminating the chirpy place and a giant ferris wheel sparkling above the rest.
"Wow," I muttered under my breath and stepped out of the car, relishing the cool breeze.
I turned to Alec with a grin. "Let's go."
Without waiting for his reply, I sprinted towards the entry gates, not missing his low chuckle behind me.
While he bought the tickets, I bought us hotdogs and coke. Carrying the bag of items in my arms, I met Alec near the entrance and handed him his coke and hotdog.
"Isn't this place amazing?" I laughed as I watched a kid drop his ice cream on the ground and looking up at his mother hopefully.
Alec wasn't carrying his haughty attitude around, instead he looked calm and relaxed for once.
I watched as he looked around the place with a glint in his eyes, almost like he was excited to be here but was too lofty to show it.
"Look at that," I burst out laughing at the toddler twin girls who were fighting for the teddy bear they had won in a game.
My eyes grew wide when its empty spot was filled by a giant white teddy bear.
"I want that," The words escaped my lips involunatrily and before I knew it, I had grabbed Alec's hand and was dragging him towards the stall.
I bought three rings and noted the number of the teddy. 5.
The bottle with the label 5 was the third one in the row. I threw the first ring but it didn't fall anywhere near the bottles, causing me to grit my teeth in annoyance.
Just then, one of the twin girls came up and asked for rings.
Oh no!
I threw the next two rings carefully but sighed when none of them even hit any of the bottles.
Now it was the girl's chance.
She threw the ring and my eyes grew wide when it neared the bottle but she missed closely.
"Ha Ha Ha," I shouted and laughed loudly, which caused the girl's parents to turn in my direction, raising their brows at me when the girl started complaining that she didn't get it.
I let out a nervous laugh at their judgemental looks.
What? I can want a teddy too.
I turned around in embarrassment, which turned into surprise at the sight of Alec trying to stop himself from laughing.
A smile formed on my lips and I narrowed my eyes at him playfully.
"You enjoyed that, huh?" I asked.
"Enjoyed?" He rolled his eyes. "You suck at this, Scarlet."
"Like you are any better," I took a bite of my hotdog. I still didn't get how he finished his hotdog in a minute.
"If that girl doesn't win it, I can bet on it."
I raised a brow. "Okay, Mr. I'm-Perfect-At-Everything, but if you lose, I get to call you loser for a day."
"Which grade are you in?"
"Accepting it or not, loser?" I gave him a forced smile.
His lips pulled up into a challenging smirk. "Okay. But if I win, I get to do anything with you tonight."
My heart skipped a beat.
His eyes held a playful glint as he lifted his brow. "Accepting it or not, love?"
My cheeks heated up at his words and a smile formed on my lips but I tried to suppress it and let out a giggle instead.
Yeah be more stupid, Scarlet.
"Oh-okay," I finally choked out and Alec stepped towards the stall.
The little girl threw her last ring and it fell around another bottle. She got paints as her prize and finally left with her sister and parents.
Now, it was Alec's turn.
He threw the first ring but it didn't land around any of the bottles. I wanted to laugh and give him the sass but I didn't.
The second attempt was a failure too.
Before the third one, he looked over his shoulder with a smirk and my heart started beating rapidly, suddenly not being able to decide if I want him to lose or not.
Do I want him to win?
Maybe a bit.
The third ring took off from his hands and I watched in amazement as it landed right above the 5th label bottle and embraced it.
I gasped in surprise when the large white teddy was handed to Alec and he turned to me with a smirk.
My lips parted when he walked up to me and stopped when he was an inch away.
My palms became sweaty when he ducked his head down, his hot breath fanning my face as he brought his mouth in contact with the corner of my lips.
My eyes grew wide. Did he just peck me...?
He leaned back and I watched as he licked the hotdog sauce off his lips with a smirk.
"You had some sauce there," He shrugged and held the teddy bear out for me.
With a shaky hand, I reached for it and held it to my side, holding the hotdog in my other hand.
"T-thank you," I muttered with a nervous smile.
"The pleasure will be all mine," He whispered huskily, causing tingles to run down my spine.
I was left tongue tied and my eyes locked with his sparkling blue ones, a warm feeling settling inside my chest upon seeing him like that.
Blinking, I looked away and caught the sight of the beautiful ferris wheel.
"Let's go to the ferris wh- oh no never mind," I shook my head and he raised a brow.
"Why not?"
I frowned at him. "Aren't you afraid of heights?"
His eyes narrowed for a moment. "I'm not afraid of heights, just get a little nervous but who doesn't?"
I raised up my hotdog and teddy in air. "Alright. Let's go then."
Taking the last bite of my hotdog, I threw the wrapper in a trash can and we walked up to the line for the ferris wheel.
"This queue sucks balls," I groaned at the slow moving line up ahead.
Turning to Alec, I almost gasped when I didn't find him there, instead came face to face with a teenage boy of about fifteen who was staring at me blankly.
Did he hear that?
I looked around and fished my phone out to call him, just then I spotted him walking up to me with two ice cream cones in his hand.
"When did you leave?"
"You were too engrossed in checking that clown out. I thought I'd let you," He shrugged and handed me chocolate ice cream.
My jaw dropped open. "I was looking at his hair. The blue wig is kinda funny."
His lips lifted up in amusement. "You didn't even realize when he winked at you."
"He did what?" I looked back at the clown and to my surprise, he was looking in my direction while handing out a few balloons to the kids.
I turned back to Alec.
"Talk about creepy," I rolled my eyes and sighed in relief when the queue moved ahead, and thankfully the clingy version of IT wasn't looking my way anymore.
"I think you have no reason to worry about it unless she swings the other way," Alec muttered.
I stared at him in confusion and then looked back at the clown girl. Yes, she was a girl.
I let out a laugh.
The queue moved ahead and we were finally seated in our carts with the handle bar locked infront of us. I had the teddy carefully sitting to my left while Alec was on my right.
"How did you even know that?" I asked when our cart started moving up.
"From her physique," He shrugged and looked ahead. I followed his gaze to the clown woman now playing games with children.
Did he check her out?
"And I can tell that there's a hot woman of about 20 under all those layers," He spoke.
I smiled.
"Ow," He groaned, holding his stomach where I had elbowed him, not like it would have hurt him with all those abs.
I was glad his ice cream didn't slip out of his hands.
"What was that for?" He frowned at me.
"What?" I asked innocently.
"You just hit me."
"Did I? Oh I'm sorry. I just have this tendency to punish jerks out of impulse," I shrugged.
He stared at me for a moment and then he looked ahead and if I wasn't looking at him right then, I would have missed the smile that reached his lips for a fleeting moment.
Looking down, I realized that we were already half way up as the cart slowly moved, causing the stalls to become smaller.
I turned to Alec and watched as he tried to keep a straight face by not looking down.
"If you weren't such a jerk, maybe I'd let you hold my hand," I spoke.
His head snapped in my direction. "For the last time, I'm not scared of heights."
I burst out laughing, throwing myself a little forward which caused the handle to shake a bit.
"Whoa. Stay still," Alec suddenly said, eyeing it.
I rolled my eyes. "Chill out. It's not going to come off."
"You surely haven't seen any of the Final Destinations, have you?" He took a bite of his ice cream, probably to calm himself.
I bit my lip to suppress a smile.
If that wasn't the cutest I'd seen of him.
Before I could process, my hand reached for his and I intertwined our fingers.
The ice cream in his hand stopped mid air and he turned to me, his beautifully messy dark brown hair making him look like a Greek God under the moonlight, his blue eyes twinkling like they held the entire galaxy in them and his face illuminated by the moon behind him.
I noticed some icing on his mouth and leaned forward.
My tongue met the corner of his lips and I slowly licked the icing off. His jaw clenched and I left a small kiss there.
I tried with all my power to pull back but for once, he wasn't controlling me and neither was I controlling him.
I didn't know where we were but all I wanted from that moment was to stay. I wanted it to stay the way it was.
And so, I leaned in closer and pressed my lips against his.
His lips started moving against mine. The kiss was soft, unlike the demanding ones we had previously shared.
I could feel his soft breath against my skin, and the beating of his heart against my palm lying on his chest.
I wrapped my hand around the back of his neck as his arm encircled my waist. The kiss held a fiery passion that made butterflies explode in my stomach.
We pulled back and rested our foreheads against each others, breathing heavily.
Slowly, I opened my eyes and found him looking at me.
He had an unreadable expression on his face, almost seeming baffled and conflicted.
"Uhh you had icing near your lips," I spoke as a justification, not really knowing why.
My words seemed to have snapped him out of his thoughts as he swallowed, blinked and looked away from me.
Our bar was lifted. The ride was over.
My heart sank into my chest when we stepped off the cart without a word from him.
This is it. He's pushing me away again.
A lump was forming in my throat as I watched him walk ahead of me. Why, Alec why?
I hugged the large soft toy close to my chest, hoping to conceal my breaking conduct behind it.
Kyle brought the car near the exit and we got into the backseat without a word to each other.
Setting the teddy between us, I turned away from him and looked outside.
I could see him cutting glances at me through his obscure reflection in the window but I didn't turn towards him.
A warm touch on my hand made me turn my head in confusion and I found his hand wrapped around mine.
I lifted my gaze up but he was looking outside the window.
Sighing, I leaned my head against the soft toy and let him hold my hand.
Maybe I'll let him break me again.
