Tw: Violence, mentions of abandonment, language, death.

Rex is such a bad liar.

"I have bad news," Anakin gravely said, running a hand through his hair. "Kara, we've picked up on chatter that indicates the Separatists mean to capture your family and use against you."

Kara glanced up from the piano. "Good for them."

Anakin paused. "I don't think you understand. They've located your family and have sent agents to capture them."

Rex discreetly shook his head, dragging a finger over his throat as a warning of what Kara would potentially do to him.

"And?" Kara prompted, throwing her legs over the side of the piano bench to face the group. "Want me to send them a card? Want me to go capture them first?"

"No, I was going to say you should go to them. I'm giving you permission to go off and rescue them. Do you not want to save them?" Anakin ignored Rex's frantic attempts to warn him, plowing ahead with his questioning.

"No, I really don't," Kara coldly said, slamming the lid of the piano down before wincing at the loud sound. "They abandoned me."

"Mesh'la, they would owe you twice if you saved their lives," Rex murmured, kissing her forehead.

Kara perked up. "I could always be the bigger person and save them. Alright, I'll do it."

"Just be discreet. You're technically not supposed to go on your own since you're on probation, so don't draw attention to yourself," Anakin ordered. "And take Rex with you, so in the chance you get caught, we can say you had supervision."

"We won't be gone for long. Just enough for me to brag I'm still alive, see what they've been up to, and maybe steal a couple credits from them." Kara grabbed Rex's arm and began to pull him from the room. "Oh wow, I'm bringing my boyfriend to meet my family!"

And all of a sudden Rex regretted convincing her to go.

"Remember, I'm Karabella," Kara whispered, arm looped through Rex's.

"That's the dumbest cover name ever," Rex quietly said. "It literally has your name in it."

"Fine. I'll be... Alice," Kara decided. "What about you?"

"Why do we even need fake names?" Rex questioned. "We're only going to talk to your parents, who we'll have to tell who we really are."

"Fine, if you're going to be boring!" Kara exclaimed. "Oh, and I should prepare you for my parents."

"I'm sure I'll be okay," Rex said and guided her around a corner when she got distracted by a neon sign. "They're just people."

Kara scoffed. "They're the most judgemental people ever. Even before they left, they rarely spoke to me. They only talked with me when I did something good by their standards."

"So?"

"So we have to impress them or they won't even talk with us!" Kara hissed. "We can't tell them about what we do, they'll be mortified that their daughter kills people! They'll be horrified that I'm dating a soldier! That's why we're wearing disguises!"

"If we tell them their lives are in danger, I'm sure they'll hear us out," Rex confidently said.

Kara stared him in the eyes and raised her fist to the door. They had stopped outside what was allegedly her parents' house, and Kara knocked on the door.

A woman with black hair, streaked with white opened the door. She looked down her nose at them. "May I help you?"

"Uh, we need to talk to you." Kara's hand tightened on Rex's arm. "Can we come inside?"

The woman's face strained as she forced a polite smile. "Who are you?"

"Kara. I'm Kara," she replied.

The woman pursed her lips. "Am I supposed to know who you are?"

"Your daughter?" Rex interjected.

Kara's mother's eyes widened. "Kara! Oh, come in! Is this your husband?"

"Um," Kara glanced at Rex briefly, who nodded, "yes, yes he is."

"Oh I'm so proud!" Kara's mother squealed. "I always knew you'd get married!" She ushered them to a sitting room, putting them down on a couch.

"Yes, that has been my biggest accomplishment in life," Kara sarcastically said.

Kara's mother held out a hand for Rex. "I'm Lisa." She craned her neck and screamed, "Gerald! Get in here!"

A man hurried into the sitting room, a young woman trailing behind him. "Yes?"

"Our daughter has returned!" Lisa excitedly said, gesturing to Kara. "Kara! Remember her?"

Gerold frowned, scratching at his balding head. "Kara?"

"I have a sister?" The woman next to Gerald put her hands on her hips.

"Kara, this is Paulina. Paulina, this is Kara." Lisa clasped her hands. "Kara's married! Isn't that great?"

"So am I!" Pauline showed off her engagement ring, breaking with pride. "He just proposed last night! I'm having him come over to meet you!"

"Who? Harry? Or was it Jacob?" Lisa jumped up and down with joy. "Oh this is a great day!"

"What is happening?" Rex muttered to Kara.

Kara shook her head. "I really don't know."

"No, it's the boy I met last week!" Paulina joined her mother in bouncing around. "I'm going to get married!"

"I'm so proud of you!" Lisa kissed Paulina's cheek.

"We have something we need to tell you," Kara seriously said. "So-"

Lisa gasped. "Are you pregnant?"

"What?" Kara lost her train of thought, a frown forming on her face.

"Oh, you are!" Lisa gushed, gripping Kara's face. Her nails dug into Kara's features as she turned her head to examine her daughter closer. "I knew it! I could tell just by looking at you!"

"No, I-" Kara was cut off by Rex interrupting.

"Yes, she is," he said, much to Kara's displeasure. "Yup. Uh, she's with child. A human child specifically."

"Oh, I'll go get refreshments and you can catch us up everything!" Lisa hurried off, Paulina and Gerald chasing after her.

"Why did you say I'm pregnant?" Kara demanded, whirling around angrily. "And who even says 'with child'?"

"You were the one who said they'd only talk to us if we made them happy! Did you not see her face when she said that?" Rex at least had the decency to look embarrassed. "We'll tell them about the Separatists then we can leave."

"Here's some of my best wine!" Lisa handed out glasses as they returned. "Let's have a toast!"

Kara was the only one without a drink and instead raised an imaginary glass. "To attempted assassinations!"

Lisa's smile faded. "What?"

"Oh, did I forget to mention that?" Kara cocked her head. "The Separatists are coming for you."

Paulina gasped and covered her mouth. "How come?"

"Enough make-believe!" Kara stood and Rex let out a heavy sigh. "We're not actually married."

"My grandbaby's going to be born out of wedlock?" Lisa paled, clutching at her chest.

"Does that matter? You don't have to be married to have a baby!" Kara furiously shouted before holding up a hand. "Wait. No. I'm not having his baby."

Rex narrowed his eyes at Kara. "You cheated on me?"

Kara shot him a filthy look. "What are you doing?"

He shrugged. "I just thought I'd contribute something."

"I'm not pregnant," said Kara firmly. "We're not here to catch up."

Lisa scowled. "Then why are you here?"

"We're both Republic soldiers and because of it, the Separatists want to use you against me. They're sending someone to capture you, or kill you," Kara told her family. "So we're here to warn you."

"You've put our family in danger?" Lisa stilled.

"Well-" Kara's head whipped to the side as Lisa slapped her face.

Rex wanted to intervene, but the look on Kara's face stopped him from doing anything of the sort.

"Did you just slap me?" Kara touched her cheek, where a handprint was blossoming.

"You put my family in danger!" Lisa screeched. "You probably led the straight here, you bitch!"

"There's my fiancé!" Paulina pointed out the window, not paying attention to anything that was happening. "Isn't he handsome?"

Kara didn't look, still staring at Lisa. "Did you just call me a bitch?"

Rex took a step back.

A laugh bubbled up out of Kara's throat. "Did you slap me and call me a bitch?"

Lisa's shoulders pulled back as she sneered. "I did. What are you going to do about it, bitch?"

Kara smiled, stepping towards the door. "Rex, we're leaving. If they don't want our help, that's fine."

Rex went to her side and glared at Lisa.

The door opened before Kara could open it, and Paulina's fiancé stepped in. Paulina strutted over and put her chin on his shoulder. "Everyone, this is my fiancé."

Kara punched Coda, sending him tumbling to the floor.

Coda's fingers brushed his lip, touching the blood that came to the surface. "It's nice to see you too, Kara."

"That felt good," Kara told Rex, flexing her fist.

"It's so good to meet the whole family! I have gifts for everyone!" Coda pulled up a blaster, levelling it at Paulina's forehead.

Rex lunged at Coda, just as he pulled the trigger. Lisa screamed as Paulina fell to the floor, dead. Coda was tackled by Rex, barely managing to kill Lisa and Gerald as he went down.

And Kara watched as her family died.

She felt numb as Coda wiggled out from under Rex, running out the open door.

Rex gently placed a hand on her arm. "Mesh'la? Are you okay?"

Kara looked away from her mother's body to gaze at him. "I'll be okay. It's not like we were close or anything."

"I have to admit, I'm jealous." Rex sighed. "I wanted to be the one to punch him."
