Chapter Six
Addhya's POV
I don't know what I was expecting today. It's Monday afternoon and I've come late, tired from work. When I opened the door, I see the usual. A passed out Sadhil, green bottles lying on the floor turning the white carpet green with the sun's fading rays and the TV on, playing a show I can't seem to comprehend. My eyes stray away from the TV, watching Sadhil on the couch.
He had an arm lying on the floor, his grip on the beer bottle more than reality. His eyes had bags, deep dark bags that I couldn't see this morning when I rushed out of home.
If I could call it that. I admit I wasn't ready for marriage, that commitment wasn't something I needed more than my career. My career should have happened before I decided to get married. Maybe if I had met Sadhil later, when we both had established careers, our lives wouldn't have been such a mess where I can't even face him.
I brushed my lip against his forehead. He remained still, indicating he hasn't even realized I was here. "I'm sorry," I mumble, my voice a trembling whisper as I watch his sleeping figure.
I don't know what I'm more sorry about. The fact that our marriage had failed or that I don't even want to be in his company anymore.
I left the room, silently. As I leave, my dress brushed past a frame, slamming it on the floor. I bended over, folding the fabric of my blue dress between my knees as I looked at the photo. It was of us smiling, Sadhil's arms around my shoulders. I had looked up to his eyes lovingly and he was smiling as he looked at me. It was a perfect scenery but we didn't seem to notice it as much as each other.
I stood up, letting the frame remain on the floor. The world was a swirling blur as I rushed out of the room, wiping my tears away as I do. I slammed the living room door shut, leaning my body against the door frame. Tears fall easily, dropping one by one to the concrete floor.
How did our relationship fail so badly? We were so happy, so in live and perfect for each other. My gaze fell to the car and I gripped my key chain tightly. My shoes were still on so I carried on walking to the door, not letting my gaze fall on the plants we planted together, the house we painted together and every single other memory that could trigger me into going back.
I slammed the car door shut, drying my tears as I turn on the engine. There was no idea on where to go or what to do. I just wanted to get out of here, go somewhere far far away. Place where the ache in my heart didn't exist, a place where only happy moments existed and pain doesn't exist.
The moments I drove was a blur. Could have been because I was wiping away tears every few seconds or that I was gripping the steering wheel too hard.
It wasn't until I heard my ringtone playing when I started to look in my mirrors. I was too distraught to see a car behind me for the last few blocks but now it's so close. I grabbed my phone tightly, taking the first turn I could manage.
It's still behind me. I checked the caller ID, my breathes coming fast. I picked up the phone, uncaring of Sadhil's face appearing on it. "Addhya? Where are you? Are you okay?" His words seemed slurred but that was all that remained of the mess I saw earlier.
"There's a car behind me," I answered, my heart racing as I check the mirrors. "It's been behind me for a while now."
"Try switching lanes. Addhya, where are you? I'll meet you up at the nearest carpark okay?" Sadhil quickly said. I locked my lips as I said my address.
The sliver car is coming closer. From here, I could see a shadow of the figure behind the wheel. "I'm in the car. Everything will be fine," Sadhil reassuringly spoke, his words still sounding strange. He seemed to have sobered up a bit but not completely. Would he even be able to drive?
I rearranged the mirrors, spotting the car again. The car started to speed up, almost chasing after me. "Sadhil, it's speeding up, I can't go much faster," I replied, my eyes still on the racing car. "I can't outrun it, it's right behind me."
"Everything will be okay, I'll call the police now," Sadhil panicked soon as the words come out of my lips. The car moved through a turn quickly, too quick for me.
I frantically move the wheel, trying to get it to go the other way. "Sadhil!" I shrieked, tears escaping my eyes as a white cloud like thing floats in my face. My IPhone fell to the ground despite the fact I grabbed for it, trying to talk to Sadhil. My attempts fail quickly and it fell to the ground anyways.
"Addhya! Are you okay?!" Sadhil yelled, his voice sounding as I it was on the verge of tears. "I'm almost there, just hold on. Please." His please was a whisper, more of a hope than request.
I breathe out, my hand on my bleeding lip as a few tears seep out. I couldn't say anything. My lips seemed to be stuck, my throat beyond dry as the door of the car opened.
The man in the silver car was unseen, the shadows of the tree in front of me covered him completely. "She's dead. I know you wanted the guy but it was an accident. The girl was in his car," the man said, talking to either his phone or another person.
"It won't happen next time," the man said, shutting the door quickly. I close my eyes, hearing Sadhil yell my name over and over.
