Wound
Estrid mixed herbs into the water using what she had learned from Maya and Estrid. When she woke up, and Sophia was nowhere to be found, she thought her friend had gone to get some herbs. Hours passed, and that's when she knew something was wrong; she told Varick, and he told Arne.
Sophia waited anxiously for her friend's arrival, and then Maja entered with more flowers and wood in her arms. "Still worried for your friend? Worry not; she will arrive safely."
"Y-Yes, I know that she will arrive safely. She is stubborn to the bone."
Suddenly, the women heard groups of horses entering the city, and the women went outside; Arne and other men arrived with Ragnar, who had an arrow on his back. Estrid gasped in horror as she watched Ragnar being taken off the horse. Varick and Golm got out of the house and saw what was occurring. "Quickly take him to his quarters!" ordered Arne.
The men did as they were told; Estrid went to Arne. "M-My Lord, where is Sophia!? Is she safe!? Is she alive!?"
Arne motioned out his hand. "She is safe. Sophia will be arriving any moment. You and Maja prepare all necessary to take the arrow out."
"I-I don't know how to. Sophia never taught me."
Arne was about to speak but then noticed a horse coming toward the city; it was Sophia. However, she wasn't alone. To his surprise, she looked to be carrying an infant. Estrid also noticed this as she squealed with joy. Sophia commanded the horse to stop; one of the Vikings held onto the reigns while Sophia got off.
"Sophia, you're here! You're safe!" Estrid ran to her friend and hugged her. When she did that, she noticed the infant. "What is this?"
"I will explain everything when the time is right. I need to put this child somewhere safe." She looked at Arne. "Is Ragnar in his quarters?"
He nodded as he went inside. The young women went inside, where Maja was fixing some materials for Ragnar. "You returned as I thought you would. I have water and some herbs. Is there anything else you need?"
"I also need some honey, thread, and needles."
As Maja prepared everything, Sophia went to her cot and laid the infant onto it; he was asleep. Maja noticed and stopped momentarily but continued as she gathered everything needed. Once everything was done, she motioned the materials to Estrid. "You two can go. Estrid, you have much more to learn about treatment; I will care for the child."
Sophia looked at Maja and nodded. "Let's go, Estrid."
The two women left the house, and Maja was left alone with the child, who was still asleep. Maja sat next to the infant and touched his hair. "What a destiny you will have, young one."
Meanwhile, Ragnar was lying on his stomach as his upper clothing and armor were removed. Golm, his sons, and his wife were present. They noticed that blood slowly poured through the wound. Sophia and Estrid entered with materials at hand; they went to Ragnar, who was trying to stay awake. "Ragnar, I'm here. You'll be fine!"
"Will he? He's losing a lot of blood," said Arne.
"He will live. By the looks, the arrow has not gone through any bone, which won't give us grief. However, if the arrow is not taken off carefully, it could lead to an infection and kill him." Sophia noticed some feathers on a wooden table and put the tips on hot water to disinfect them. Everyone was silent as they watched Sophia do her work. Once she had taken the feather out of the water, she also got a knife and put it in the hot water to disinfect. While that happened, she got a small wooden cup, poured some honey with elderflower, and mixed it.
"Pardon, can any of you bring another bowl of hot water, please?"
Liv went to the fireplace, got some hot water, put it in a bowl, and gave it to Sophia. Sophia then got some of the herbs that Estrid crushed, such as rosemary, chamomile, and some sage, and put them in the water. When the herbs were mixed, she ordered Estrid to wash her hands, and then did the same.
Sophia then took a thin yarn and a needle and glued them together. Once that was done, she took the knife and put it on Ragnar's wound. "Estrid, give him the wet cloth. Ragnar, bite hard into it. This might hurt, but I need to open the wound to remove the arrowhead so it doesn't get stuck carefully."
Estrid put the cloth close to his mouth and bit into it. Then, Sophia slowly cut more of the wound; Ragnar felt this flesh opening more and the air hitting the wound. "Estrid, please extend the skin so I can fit the tip of the feathers onto the arrowhead."
Estrid did as she was told, and Sophia got the two feathers and put them on each side of the barbs of the arrow. She slowly removed the arrow from the flesh, ensuring she did not make more of it. Ragnar groaned onto the cloth as he felt his body burn from the action. To his luck, the arrowhead didn't break, and he got stuck into the wound. Blood poured out, and Sophia put a clean cloth over the wound. "Estrid, please put pressure on the wound."
Her friend followed her instructions; Sophia got the needle and yarn, and she dipped it in the honey and elderflower combination. Estrid was instructed to remove the cloth, and Sophia began to sow the wound. Sophia's hands were filled with blood, but it didn't irk her.
Golm and his family stood in silence as they watched everything unfold; they were impressed at her knowledge. Arne felt in another world as he watched the young woman tend to Ragnar. She held no fear in her eyes; his heart beat rapidly at the sight of her.
Once the wound was sowed, Sophia put the honey and elderflower mix onto his wound and cleaned off the blood. She then instructed Estrid to get a clean and long cloth from the house, which she did so in minutes. Sophia got the knife, ripped it, and tightly wrapped it over Ragnar's wound so the pressure could keep the blood flowing. Golm helped since he was strong enough to put pressure on it. "Thank you, my Lord. I also wanted to inform you that Lady Brynhild and her people will come here soon; Frode attacked their village."
"Very well. You did well, young healer. Your skill is unmatched. Clean yourself, and when Lady Brynhild arrives, I wish to speak to you both."
Sophia nodded as she knelt before Ragnar; he was asleep. The pain must have put a strain on him. However, she was relieved that he was out of harm's way. She asked Estrid to clean up while she went to freshen up; her friend agreed. Sophia walked out of Ragnar's quarters and slowly walked to a water stand where she slowly washed Ragnar's blood off her arms and hands; she was shaking.
So much had happened that she felt that she was still in shock. Her mind was so preoccupied that she didn't realize Arne stood beside her. Once finished cleaning her hands and arms, Sophia noticed him. When she was about to speak, Arne got her face and motioned her to his; Arne's lips were on hers.
He kissed her.
