Act One. The Formation
" Please don't put your life in the hands of a rock 'n' roll band
who'll throw it all away "
( Don't Look Back In Anger. Oasis )
August 31st, 2024 - OUTER BANKS, NORTH CAROLINA
The SCREEN is black. The sounds of waves crashing is heard in the background as the buzz of a microphone fades in. There is a slight beeping, as if someone is tapping on the microphone. And then a slightly muffled but deep voice speaks.
ㅤ[ Interviewer ]: Tell me, what is it like...living in the Outer Banks?
The camera SWITCHES to a blonde girl, her wavy hair thrown into a bun, loose pieces dangling around her shoulders. She has on a pair of denim overall shorts that are rolled up once around her knees and a white t-shirt underneath, apparent paint stains seen on the sleeves. The background is picturesque: a fading sunset as the girl holds some paint brushes in her hand.
ㅤ[ Harlowe Marchand ]: It's pretty amazing, if you're able to keep things interesting. Which I have always been able to do, just ask my brother Sonny. When we were kids, I would always put on plays for him, I've never seen him laugh so hard.
The scene CUTS to a brown haired teenager, a pair of tinted sunglasses lazily lying on the bridge of his crooked nose. He is leaning back on a rocking chair, on the porch of some columned white house. The blonde girl from the previous scene is seen to be staring outside intently from a window on the far left.
ㅤ[ Sonny Marchand ]: She said that? God. I'm not answering your stupid fucking question.
The camera FOLLOWS as the brown haired boy gets up and storms into the house behind him, slamming the screen door behind him. Whispers are heard from behind the camera as the scene SWITCHES to a third person. A tall boy with dark, neatly cropped curls and warm brown eyes that seem to hesitate. He's wearing a faded hoodie and shorts, his sneakers new but worn. He stands on a cracked basketball court, a ball in one hand, the other shoved into his pocket. The evening sun casts long shadows over the graffiti-covered fence behind him.
ㅤ[ Sandy Monroe ]: I only moved in a month ago, but I guess it's pretty cool. Everything seems pretty divided though, like I'm in the West Side Story or something. You should have seen it, some guy pummeled another guy for literally no reason.
The next scene SHOWS a pair of siblings, standing in the driveway in front of a mansion. The girl, with straight blonde hair and dimples, wears a loose floral cami top and a pair of jean shorts. The older one, the boy, has a fresh buzzcut and a killer stare, paired with a loose tee and khaki shorts. The boy seems uninterested, his arms crossed and eyes wandering anywhere by the camera, while the girl has a bright smile and one arm slung around the shoulders of her brother.
ㅤ[ Sarah Cameron ]: Oh, we love it here. Born and raised, couldn't ask for any place else. I don't think I'll ever move away.
ㅤ[ Rafe Cameron ]: Oh please, once she graduates high school she'll have a whole new answer to that question. But I can't deny, it's pretty enjoyable, especially if you are at the top of the food chain.
The girl furrows her brows and scoffs. She removes her arm and crosses them, mimicking the boy next to her. After a moment of staring him down, the girl directs her attention back to the camera.
ㅤ[ Sarah Cameron ]: Don't listen to him, he's got the worst case of senioritis.
The scene CUTS to one last person. A girl with sun-kissed skin and dark, loose waves falling over her shoulders. She's wearing a cropped tank top and cutoff shorts, her signature beaded bracelets jingling softly as she adjusts the strap of her canvas bag. Behind her, the ocean sparkles under the midday sun, the waves crashing against the rocky shoreline.
ㅤ[ Kiara Carrera ]: Sure, it's nice, but that doesn't mean this place doesn't have its secrets. It could use some change, that's for sure.
The next MONTAGE is quick. As each question is asked, the camera switches from each person immediately as they answer. But first, the deep voice is heard again.
ㅤ[ Interviewer ]: If you could describe the Outer Banks in one word, what would it be?
The camera STARTS on the blonde girl, a paintbrush now tucked behind one of her ears and she uses a towel to clean off her hands. At the question, she laughs
ㅤ[ Harlowe Marchand ]: Restless.
Then the camera GOES through the rest of the teenagers. Through a mix of emotions and reactions, they answer somewhat honestly.
ㅤ[ Sonny Marchand ]: Overrated.
ㅤ[ Sandy Monroe ]: Unreal.
ㅤ[ Sarah Cameron ]: Euphoric.
ㅤ[ Rafe Cameron ]: Control.
ㅤ[ Kiara Carrera ]: Divided.
