Dinner time + "good" night (chapter 5 and 6)
Dinner time
Enol came back with his share of cup noodles, with burnt water, I guess. It's usually this or convenience store bread for our meals. It was all I could afford with my part time jobs. We happily savoured every noodle. The warmth of the soup sent waves of energy throughout my fatigued body. This was probably the highlight of everyday for me. Cool bread for hot days and noodles for winter nights. I could see Sole slurp her noodles. Too be honest, it was more 'devouring' her noodles in this case. This small girl was a machine not to be reckoned with when it comes to eating. When I glanced up, I saw Enol staring at me. I gave him an angry expression. He got the signal and went back to his food.
Sole then stood up, gulping down the noodle's soup.
"T-thank you for the meal. I don't wish to overstay my w-welcome" Sole spoked in a hushed tone. I could tell she wasn't very confident when talking to more than one person. Maybe she was intimidated by Enol's prepubescent facial hair. Who knows?
"Whence had thou gotten such a thought of overstaying?" Enol questioned, rather confusingly. I barely understood a thing he said. "He said, from where have you gotten such a thought as overstaying." Sole was quivering. She may have beeen cheerful with me, but she was surprisingly timid. The knight speech was quickly getting old too.
"But, I thought I was only invited for dinner." She was clearly really scared as she realised we could have ulterior motives. We couldn't really blame her. I assured her that she could stay as long as she wants to. Her eyes glinted with delight and she smiled from ear to ear. She was ecstatic and took advantage of the situation. She let her arms wrap around my torso, leaning in for a hug.
I stood speechless, in disbelief. I tried moving but my body wouldn't listen. I could feel her warmth on my body. She tiptoed and rested her head on my chest. She smiled once more. I didn't know what to do. A bead of sweat started rolling down my cheek. I haven't been in this situation before. Should I hug her back? Should I push her back? Should i just stay and stand there, continuing to look like an idiot? I wrapped one arm around her back and stroked my fingers through her soft, silky hair, awkwardly. Once again, I didn't know what I was doing. Enol coughed to interrupt our small situation. " Hey 'bro', I see you blushing over there." I turned my head to see my reflection. He was right. Sole giggled a bit and let me go. "Not as mucho around girls, eh bro?" Sole whispered into my ear. I looked away in humiliation. "Hey can I get a hug too? Haha " Enol asked jokingly. Sole immediately replied with a stern "no". I heard a slight "shatter". That evening, Enol's heart broke.
'Good' night
"Oh would you look at the time. Hey 'bro', shouldn't you be sleeping early for work tomorrow?" Enol sarcastically snickered, a bit bitter about the situation. Since both sides of the RV had a row of three seats, that was usually our bed, one for me and one for Enol. Being the gentleman I was, I gave mine up to Sole. Mostly because she immediately refused to sleep on Enol's side when he offered first. Then followed by another small 'crack'. Talk about adding fuel the the fire. Enol quickly went to bed, exhausted from the endless waves of rejection. Sole and I soon followed him and went to sleep, or we tried.
I twisted and turned on the cold, hard floor. Somehow, it was relaxing but the concrete was too cold to lay on one side for more than five minutes. "Bro? You having trouble sleeping too? Can I join you? It's really hot up here" Sole whispered down from the seats. Without thinking, I replied with, "Of course, it's actually pretty cold down here". I felt the blanket shift, then it was raised and it settled down again. I turned around and Sole's face was directly in front of mine. Her dark blue hair covering half her pale skin on her face. As beautiful as the moon itself.
I've never really noticed up until now how astonishingly, uhm how do I put it, beautiful she was. She was wrapped in both the blanket and the beam of moonlight shining through the window. The sight was robbing me of speech. And breath. I wanted to get closer. Yearning rushed through my soul, stirring me to the depths. My gazed dipped a bit. Not bad, for someone her size. I smirked to myself as I throttled back my roaring imagination before it was too late.
She opened her eyes and stared back at me. She gave me a mischievous smile. "It is rather cold down here. Poor bro." Sole whispered but it was barely audible. She leaned in even closer and pressed her lips on my forehead. I was extremely uncomfortable, yet I felt comforted. I felt my heart pounding faster and faster. Blood rushed to my head. Luckily it was too dark to see my face becoming a dang tomato again. It wasn't all bad after five minutes and I processed what happened. I guess it did make me feel much warmer. It felt nice. I was drifting off to sleep.
Well, I was. Until I felt the blanket shift, then it was raised and it settled down again. What just happened? Oh god, please don't let there be demons in this household. I just got a family. I turned around and screamed my lungs out. I was appalled. Another pair of lips pressed on my forehead. I was less happy about it this time.
"GET OUT OF MY BED, ENOL!!!" I screamed, interrupting Enol who snuggled himself comfortably onto my bed. I bolted upwards, almost getting a heart attack. "WHAT THE HELL, ENOL. JUST GO TO SLEEP. I HAVE WORK TOMORROW" I blurted out. Both Enol and Sole roared with laughter and proceeded to high five each other.
So, they were working together after all! Whatever. I dragged my feet outside, carrying my blanket in one hand. "I'm sleeping outside!" I yelled. I threw myself up the RV and laid down on the roof, atop the spreaded cardboard boxes.
