Chapter 1≈Predicting the Future

I jumped around in my seat anticipating the final school bell. The school year was grueling but coming to an end. Sixth grade was one wild ride I couldn't wait to get off of. I hoped my summer would be the opposite of the school year, fun. My best friend, Callie, was moving in with me for the summer because her parents were visiting family in Europe and couldn't bring Callie. Callie's personality is optimistic and outgoing. I hoped my summer would be the best summer because I knew she would bend some rules.

Ring! Ah, the final bell. I picked up my belongings and dashed to my locker. The halls were crowded with people wanting to go home. I made it to my locker only to find out that there was no way I could get to it.

"Sorry Selena," Kirk moved away from my locker.

"Thank you," I was great full people still were nice in the rush of the final day of school. I grabbed my vintage backpack and started down the hallway towards the doors.

"Yo, what up," Callie came up and gave me a high five, "You excited?"

"Duh," I am thrilled to have Callie move in with me, "Wanna walk home?"

"Sure,"Callie replied, "Ready for the best summer ever?"

"Oh yeah," We started out the door. Mr. Snow, our EXTREMELY mean principal, who does not like rebels, waved goodbye to us with the cheesiest smile slapped on his face. We waved back and tried to fight the crowd of people getting to the busses.

Once we reached my house, we went into my room only to find Callie's parents failed to diliver her belongings.

"Oh just your average parents, forgetting simple tasks because they are busy serving themselves," Callie sighed.

"Don't be so hard on them, they are planning a trip out of the country," I tried to explain.

"A trip they didn't take me on," Callie sighed again.

"True dat. On the contrary, wouldn't you rather spend the summer with me instead of with family to old to do anything and family you don't even know?" I hoped I was making sense.

"You got me there," Callie was in a better mood now.

"Since my parents are never home, I guess we have the house to ourselves," My parents were never home because they were always working and they barely even noticed me, if I left the country they probably wouldn't even notice. Being the adventurous girl Callie is, she told me this.

"You thinking what I am thinking?" Callie asked.

"Probably not, just tell me," Hopefully she has something fun in mind.

"Let's go swimming!" Callie reached into her backpack and pulled out her swimsuit, speaker, and phone.

"And here you see Callie in her natural habitat, always having fun," I motioned my arms towards her.

"Ha ha very funny," I could tell she was laughing.

"To answer your question slash statement, I would love to go swimming," I walked over to my dresser and pulled out my swimsuit. "I'll change in the bathroom and you can change in here. Is that okay?"

"Sweet," Callie nodded. I shut the door to my room and strolled into the bathroom. Once I was finished, I knocked on the door to my room.

"Callie what is taking you so long? Merry Beach is a long walk and we don't want to swim in the dark!" I kept knocking.

"Oh no, no, no," Callie called out.

  "What is it?" I asked.

"You think we are going to a public beach filled with city people?" Callie said.

"Umm yeah, isn't that the only beach in this town?" I was so confused.

"Yes it may be the only beach, but not the only body of water," Callie sounded suspicious.

"I am confused," I hoped Callie would give me a clearer answer on where we are going.

"Okay what I am about to say cannot be repeated. I know of a swimming hole not to far from your house," Finally, Callie gave me a clear answer.

"Cool," I said. She opened the door and handed me my lace cover up and my phone. "Thanks. You lead the way."

"About that. It is a long walk through town but you are going to raise suspicion if you are wearing those," She tilted her head towards the pink Crocks on my feet.

"What? Can't I wear some comfortable shoes?" I asked.

"Yes you can, but you shouldn't look like a fifty year old woman that lost her sense of style thirty years ago," Callie smiled.

"Yeah I guess your right. What would I do without you?" I joked.

"Clearly not have any sense of fashion," She laughed and handed me a pair of galaxy flip flops that matched my swimsuit perfectly.

"Yo dude, where did you get these?" They were awesome.

"This place where people go to shop, it's called the mall," Callie is the queen of sarcasm.

"Ha ha very funny. Bye the way I got you these," I handed her a pair of emoji flip flops that matched her swimsuit perfectly too.

"Thanks, the swimming hole is just passed Joe's Valley," She told me as we walked out the door.

"Joe's Valley? Are you crazy? That's like a mile from here!" I had no idea how we would get there.

"Follow my lead and we will get there soon." She said.

"I still think your crazy," I told her.

"I know, and I thank you for that," She smiled as we turned the corner of my drive way and headed up the road towards downtown. As we walked up the road, I noticed a bunch of rowdy kids playing in the sprinklers.

"Bunch of noisy kids eh?" She asked.

"Ain't that the truth," I nodded. We got to the end of the road and turned to the rows of buildings downtown.
"Geez Cal, you walk this from your house?" My feet began to hurt.

"Ya why your feet hurt?" She elbowed me in the arm.

"Yeah," I signed, "It has been one hour since we left the house and I don't see any swimming hole!"

  "Be patient," Callie told me.

"Okay," I said. We kept walking until Callie darted into an alley. "What are you doing?"

"Sh! They can't follow us!" She whispered.

"Who in the world is they?" I asked.

"My parents!" Callie whispered, "They had to pick  up something downtown and they can't know where we are going because this is my secret hide out. Got it?"

"Got it," I nodded. Callie kept walking down the alley until she turned into a private road leading to the woods. "Okay now where are we going?"

"Swimming. Through this patch of woods there is Joe's Valley and beyond that. The swimming hole," She explained.

"Okay," I said. Once we got to the woods, Callie found a trail and ran down it. "Why are you running?"

"This shortcut is private woods," Callie jumped into a hole and squatted down.

"Really Cal? Trespassing? I am not getting in trouble for your mistakes," I was shocked Callie was going on private property.

"Not my proudest thing but it is the adventure you wanted. Right?" She was making sense.

"I guess it makes sense," I nodded. Callie stood up and kept walking like nothing happened. We got to the end of the woods and walked over to a river in Joe's Valley. "This leech infested river is your idea of a swimming hole?"

"No, we boat down the river and BAM we're there," She pulled a small wooden boat into the water. "Hop in."

"Okay," I jumped in the boat. Callie jumped in after me. The boat soared off down the river. "Wow Cal! You do this every time you go swimming?"

"Yep," She repositioned herself so she faced me. "Almost there."

"Cool." I said. Out of nowhere, Callie grabbed a grappling hook from under her seat and shot it towards shore. "Cal? What the what?"

"How do you think we are going to get to shore?" She asked.

"I don't know," I can't believe she does this ever time she goes swimming! Soon we were at shore and out of the valley. Callie tied the boat to a small tree and started to hike up a hill.

"Here we are," Callie stomped her foot and held out her arms.

  "Cool," This was awesome.

"Race ya," She dropped her phone and speaker and ran into the glistening water. I dropped my phone next to hers, through my cover up to the side, and chase after her into the water. The second my body hit the water, the swimming hole lit up like a light bulb. By the time I was up, Callie was waiting on the shore for me. "Wow what is that?" She pointed to a glowing gem-like thing in the water. "I'll go get it."

"No don't–" Great. She is in the water. She came back up with the glowing gem in her hands."What is that and why is it glowing?"

"I don't know. Let's just set it down and leave it alone," She came up on shore and put it on my cover-up.

"Yeah let's just swim," I went under the water to clear my hair from my face.

"Hey if your parents don't notice you've gone swimming I bet they won't notice if we go on vacation. I know we are young but if we travel with someone else we could have a fun summer," She quit treading water and floated on her back.

"Your right! But who do we take?" I asked.

  "Joe," Said Callie.

  "Who is Joe?" I asked.

"He owns the valley, the boat and the grappling hook. And this swimming hole," She explained.

"Sounds good. When do we go?" I was excited.

"Soon. Where do you want to go?" She asked.

"Fuji," I was certain of it.

"Cool. And what do we do with this?" She swam over to shore and picked up the crystal.

"Take it with us? Sell it? Oh golly I have know idea. The question is, how do we get the money?" I asked.

"Believe it or not Joe is loaded and bored. He wouldn't mind taking us." She got off her back and started to tread water, I followed her movements.

"Sweet, can I see that?" Callie handed me the crystal. I tossed it up and down as I thought of all of the cool things in Fuji. Suddenly, Callie was pulled under the water. Next I was pulled under. I tried screaming but it didn't help. I jiggled my foot and it got loose from the grasping. Once I was up to the top of the water I looked around and tasted salt. Callie came up gasping for air after me.

"What the?" Callie looked at the crystal in my hands.

"What did I do?" I screamed.

"I don't think you did anything. I think it was what we did. What if we think of a place we want to go and have the crystal in our hands  and we are teleported there?" She explained.

"That makes sense." I started to swim towards shore. "How cool. We're in Fuji!"

"Yeah that is pretty cool," She swam after me. We reached shore only to find our belongings were sitting there waiting for us! "Selena. Did you grab those after I was pulled down?"

"No," What was going on? I stood up only to find I was a foot taller. I grabbed my phone and opened up the camera. "Callie. I am eighteen."

"Wowsers, so am I!" I panned my phone over to her. "I guess we won't be needing an adult."

"Have you realized that we are on an island with no clothes, shelter or money!" I threw the crystal to the side.

Poof! There was our backpacks. We ran over and opened them. We found no schoolwork. We found; wallets filled with cash, Pinterest-worthy clothes, bottles of water, and keys to something.

  "Dude," Callie smirked and nodded.

"Dude," I smirked and nodded back.

"Selena! Callie! How was your swim?" A woman in her mid twenties walked over to us with a platter of juices in her hands. "I brought you frozen mango juices! Your favorite! Oh goodie goodie someone dropped of your bags."

Who was this girl? How does she know our favorite juice? How does she know our names? How does she know us? And what did the gem do?
