Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The room is filled with silence. Ava Smickens stairs at the old grandfather clock. She watches the gears move inside the glass chamber. It is early December 2007 Ava is currently 8 years old. Technology has not taken interest in her small mind. All that she is interested in is the old tattered grandfather clock.

"Ava, dinner is ready." Ava's Grandmother yells from the kitchen. Ava's eyes beam with delight at the thought of food. She quickly stands up and takes one final look at the old clock, then she zooms across the wooden floor towards the kitchen.

For dinner, they have chicken sliders with a side of coleslaw. Ava jumps onto her chair between her Grandparents. A plate sits in front the girls face. Ava licks her lips and starts digging into her slider.

"The world is really changing a lot these days. They have invented the iPhone.? What is that suppose to do? The screen looks so big and where are the key pads?" Ava's Grandfather speaks taking a sip of his coffee.

"Who knows... let's just be happy with our radio. We do not need any of those fancy things in this household." Ava's Grandmother replies.

As the two elders discussed Ava listens carefully. ' Technology must be bad! If Grandmother and Grandfather think so, SO DO I!!' Ava thinks. From this moment on Ava has never wanted to be involved with anything with technology.

*A few years later.*

It is now late September 2017, Ava is now 18 years old. She hangs around the woods listening to nature and watching all the creatures. Ava stares up at the blue sky and smiles. She is currently on her way to school, and she loves taking the woods as a shortcut. The leaves and small branches crack under her feet as she walks on the dirt path. For some reason today felt different to her. She had a scared feeling in the pit of her stomach. She shakes her head trying to get rid of the feeling and continues walking.

Ava's best friend Dylan waits at the end of the wood which leads into the school courtyard. His messy brown hair covers his eyes as he looks up from his phone and see's his friend staring at a little rabbit. He looks back at his phone and sees it is already almost time to get to class. He then runs into the woods and grabs her arm and drags her onto campus.

"What is it, Dylan?" Ava asks slightly tilting her head.

"It's almost time to start class, Ava! The teacher told us Friday that we need to be here today for this activity or whatever it is." Dylan replies still dragging her to their classroom.

Ava sighs as they enter the classroom. The two teens sit in their assigned seats and have their full attention on the teacher. There was also another woman with her hair up in a bun and small librarian glasses on. She sits in a chair behind the teacher with a clipboard in her hand.

"Now, students we have announced the event that is happening here. Our class has been chosen. The Vurtal Survivors experiment." The teacher exclaims pointing at the board. A student in the front row stands up.

"But, miss. Virtual is spelled V-I-R-T-U-A-L, not V-E-R-T-U-A-L? Why is it spelled like that?" The student asks with a puzzled expression. Everyone starts whispering in agreement. The teacher then claps her hands and everyone in the classroom became silent. It was like time had stop for a mere 2 seconds. Finally, the lady with the clipboard began to speak once again.

"Yes, I know our name is quite odd. In fact, our founder thought it would be funny to see all the puzzled expressions the children would make. It was indeed funny, anyways let's get back to topic. If I call your name, please stand up." The lady clears her throat and gazed around the room. "Miss. Smickens, and Mr. Calvin." She announces.

Ava hesitates and stands up like she was told. She looked around the room, 'Who is the kid with the last name of Calvin?' Ava asks herself. Ava is also confused is why she was chosen for an electronic competition. Ava has never touched any modern electronics! Finally, a tall boy with black shaggy hair stands up. He has a baggy red hoodie and black jeans. He was one of the worst behaved kid in the school. Yet all of the girls fall head over heels just by a glimpse of him. Some have even nicknamed him 'The Vampire' because of his fairly pasty skin.

'Great! I get picked for a competition that I have no experience with, and to top it off I have to be partners with James Calvin!' Ava thinks to herself. She looks over at Dylan and sees that he was really surprised. He slowly looks over at Ava and mouths 'Good luck.' Ava glares at her shocked friend then turns her attention back to the lady.

"Ok children! Let us get going." The lady says while holding open the door. James shrugs and walks out of the room. Ava hesitates and slowly walks out taking one final glance of the classroom before completely disappearing behind the door.

The woman walks to a long black car that looks like it was freshly polished. A man opens the door and the woman enters the car, Ava looks at the car and then feels a tap on her shoulder. She turns around and sees the tall black haired boy.

"Are you going in or what?" James snaps glaring down at her. Ava sighs and gets in the car then so does James. The car starts and starts driving on the smooth-ish road. Silence, that was all the car hold, was pure silence.

After about 20 minutes in the car ride of silence and tension, the lady places her clipboard down and smirks. "I didn't properly introduce myself back there. I am Ms. Kelsey, I will be monitoring you guys in the experiment. The rules are you guys have a 2 day grace period, no one can kill you. In that time you have to find supplies for hunting, building a fort, and for weapons. You may also find people to Alli with. After the grace period is over people have a free choice to kill or not to kill, but if your Alli's you are not allowed to kill each other. Oh, and if you die in the experiment then you die in real life." Ms. Kelsey explains.

Once again silence fills the vertical. Ava looks around then looks at Ms. Kelsey. It seems like Ms. Kelsey was wanting one of the two children to speak. Ava then sighs and grabs a slice of pizza from the fancy side table. Ava takes a bite and smirks.

"My name is Ava Smickns, you won't find me anywhere because I have never touched a modern day technology in my entire life. I usually hang out in the forest behind my house usually helping out animals or just to relax and read a book. My favorite food was my Mothers fried chicken she always made before she died, Grandmother tried making it but, it was not the same. My dad left me when I was 1 year old and my Grandfather just passed last night." Ava says gazing back at her slice of pizza and taking another bite.

Ms. Kelsey smiles and then turns her full attention to the boy gazing out the window with a mountain dew bottle in his hand. He looks away from the window and wipes a tear away from his face with his hoodie sleeve. James then looks at Ms. Kelsey and raises an eyebrow. Then he looks over at Ava who now had the whole box of pizza on her lap. James sighs and places his mountain dew in the fancy cup holder.

"I am James... James Calvin. I tend to get in trouble and start fights because why not? I don't really like other people, and I do not even know why girls fall for me? I uh, usually stay in my room and watch Youtube, mostly sleep. My parents are usually on business trips and my little brother likes to bring his friends over and make fun of me in front of my face. I, of course, beat them up. That's, pretty much it about me." James finishes and then takes a giant sip of his mountain dew.

Ms. Kelsey claps her hands with a smile still plastered on her face. "Welcome to the experiment children."
