Elizabeth Dexter stood on the stairs of their new house which is surprisingly small, Albert had told her that they were moving to an estate but when they got to Wellington they realized Veronica's father had lied. Instead they moved into an old abandoned house with lots and lots of grass and a small river in the backyard.
Of course the land is considered big and she had wondered why the owner had built a small two storey at the middle of the land. Perhaps, the owner had no companion and was lonely.
Their neighbors Mr and Mrs Avril had told them the Duke moved out of this estate during the period the birthed their her first daughter Malina and she's twenty and three now.
Her brother wasn't moved by people's curious look or rumour, she knew it was because of Veronica, he loved her so much but he had wasted his love, devotion, time and sacrifices on the wrong person as she watch him grip the newspaper Mr Avril had brought to their house in the morning.
Elizabeth watched her brother whose shaky fingers traced the writings on the paper about Veronica Maxwell wedding to the Duke of Lockwood in three days.
"Albert." She wrapped her arm on her brother's larger one with a sympathetic smile. This was the right time to sneak in the 'I told you so' but Elizabeth wouldn't be that cruel to her brother.
"This...this is not possible, I married Veronica yesterday." Albert said through gritted teeth as he threw the paper on the floor.
"The Earl would never fool Duke Albert." Elizabeth told Albert.
"The Earl...that bastard wouldn't dare to fool the Duke but me." Albert shouted as he raked his hands through his hair.
"We should ask her then."
Albert dug his hand into his hair and pulled as hard as he could, he was foolish to believe the Earl's lies and now he's ruined with no other home to go, he has no choice than to keep living in an old abandoned estate he and his sister had been renovating since the day they moved in.
The earl hadn't fulfilled his promise, the only thing Albert gained from the union were the papers to an abadoned home.
"I'm going to find her."
"But...but where."
"Oh Albert, ya such a lucky man." Mr Avril laughed as he entered their home.
"I'm a finished man." Albert grumbled as he looked at Mr Avril who hasn't even noticed the siblings tensed face.
"Yes, yes you are finished indeed, with a wife whose beauty is as bright as the sun, I dare not to argue with ya."
"Wife." Albert and Elizabeth said and walked towards the door and indeed there was a woman who looked like Veronica but he knew his betrothed and it isn't her.
"You're not Veronica." Albert sneered and she smiled softly as she wiped the bead of sweat running down her face.
"Yes I'm not Veronica, I'm Verity and I was told my husband lives here." She smiled again.
"Husband indeed." Elizabeth scowled.
"Who are you and how much were you paid to ruin my life."
"I'm Verity bu...but I was not paid." She stammers as she looks at the angry man.
Albert kept calming his anger as he eyes Veronica's replica with disgust, with the resemblance he was sure she is related to Veronica, maybe a distant cousin.
"Do you know Veronica ?." Albert asks with a glare, he was going to get to the bottom of this matter, he won't let the Earl and his family make a fool out of his name.
"Yes, yes, sh....she...she's my sister." Verity answered the man with trembling hands as he moves towards her.
Please don't hit me.
Please don't hit me.
"Your sister ?". The man gripped her shoulders painfully and she looked at the people in the room for help, it was at that moment the old man present slipped out of the man's house.
"Do not lie to me." The man used one of his hands to grip her jaw while the other gripped her left shoulder.
"I'm not...not lieing sir, I'm the third sister of Veronica. My na..name is Verity, please sir don't kill me. Mama and Papa made me marry you else I'll live In a brothel.
"Liar." Alber gritted out.
"Sir no..no I'm not.. I didn't lie."
"We'll leave for your home tomorrow then." He released her and walked out of his home.
Verity turned to look at the little girl in the room, she wanted to ask her a lot of questions but didn't know if she was capable of giving her the answers so she settled for the most important question.
"Is he my husband ?" She asked with shaky voice, abs her world shattered when the girl nodded.
"He's Albert my brother, your husband." Elizabeth answered the woman pitifully and walked out to find her brother.
***
Verity was thankful for her husband younger sister who paid attention to her since she came, even though the man was cruel he hadn't sent her packing which means he does have a bone of kindness in him.
"You can sleep here, we only tidied two rooms, you were supposed to share a room with my brother, sorry the room is a mess but it's better than the rest, I promise." Elizabeth rambles.
"Thank you." Verity smiled, the room wasn't tidied but she knew it would be better than her room back at her father's estate when it gets tidied up.
"Goodnight ." Elizabeth smiled and slipped out.
Verity sighed and sat on the floor of her new room, she thought she would finally be happy with her husband but she didn't expect life to turn things around for her. She held her tears and she took in deep breath, it was at that moment it began to rain, the wind blew in her room towards her hair. She didn't know which was heavier, the rain or her tears. Verity cried on the floor and prayed for God to take away her pains because sooner or later she might decide to end her life herself.
