chapter 28 - i have an actual plan for this chapter woo
Hitoshi was mad.
And scared.
But mostly mad.
At who? May you ask?
He is mad at his best friend, and at All Might, and at Bakugo. He's mad at the blatant negligence, and the fact that Izuku and Bakugou where paired together, and at Izuku's lack of self preservation.
Overall, Hitoshi is stewing in emotions while watching Izuku's match play out. The anger started when he realized that Izuku was paired with Bakugo. That should have been the first red flag for the exercise.
Then, Izuku decided to capture Bakugo instead of meeting up with Uraraka, knowing that he didn't react well to the boy's presence.
Izuku promised to do what was best for his own well being after he left Aldera. He and Hitoshi had come to that compromise. They would do what was best for themselves, and both of their secrets would be kept. Not that Hitoshi would ever out something like Izuku's history to their class, that's just rude and wrong on so many levels.
It felt a bit like betrayal, even though he knew Izuku wasn't thinking straight. He tends to fall on his analysis when in stressful situations, and doesn't take his own emotional needs into account.
He gets even angrier when All Might doesn't end the exercise the moment that Bakugou threatens to use his gauntlet from such a short range, with Izuku in the vents no less. It adds another layer to why he hates the man.
He hates Bakugou for going through with it. He wasn't the only one who had a reaction to the blast, or Izuku's survival. Several of their classmates gasped or got up, but a good amount stayed in place, probably putting way to much trust in their teacher to regulate what was going on.
He watches as Izuku suffers prolonged mental strain for several minutes, and isn't surprised when he collapsed. He was expecting it. But, that didn't mean that fear didn't shoot through him at the sight.
----
He was sitting in Recovery Girl's office next to Izuku's cot. It was the end of their heroics classes for the day, and Hitoshi was forced to attend them before he could go see Izuku.
As for Izuku, he woke up about twenty minutes before Hitoshi got there.
At the current moment, Hitoshi was hitting him with the most ferocious glare he possibly could.
"It's a case of quirk exhaustion. He needs good sleep, and a good meal. Can you promise me that he gets that?" Recovery Girl tells him.
"Yes." Hitoshi says, never taking his eyes off of Izuku.
"Alright then." Recovery Girl says, before leaving the two boys alone.
The silence stretches a mile between them. Eventually, Hitoshi drops his glare. "I'm proud of you, scared for you, and angry." He curls in the cheap plastic chair he's sitting in, pushing his hands up his face and into his hair. "We promised eachother to put our best interests first, and you went and did the opposite!"
"What?" Izuku exclaimed, sitting up in the cot and wincing. "What are you talking about?!"
Hitoshi looked him dead in the eye. "Really?! What am I talking about?! You chose to fight Bakugo--chose!--, for fucks sake, even though you didn't have to, and almost died!"
"It was the most logical thing to do in the moment! If I hadn't taken out Bakugo he could have joined Iida in fighting us, and a 2v1 is preferable to a 2v2!"
"I know that! That's not why I'm saying it was a bad decision though!"
"Why was it a bad idea then, Hitoshi, because I'm not seeing it?!"
"Because we both know how he affects you, and you shouldn't have forced yourself into that situation!"
"Well, I don't need, nor did I ask, you to make decisions like that for me! Whether or not I can handle a situation is for me to decide!"
By the end of their argument, they were shouting. Izuku's face was wet, Hitoshi's was starting to get damp, both of their voices were hoarse, and neither were speaking to eachother.
Izuku's mom picked them up twenty minutes later. It was an uncomfortable car ride.
----
Needless to say, they were both giving eachother the silent treatment. Hitoshi stayed at his run down apartment and Izuku stayed with his mom. Inko still made Hitoshi bentos for lunch, knowing her, she probably knew more about the situation than either of them and already knew how it was going to turn out.
On Monday, they didn't talk before class like they usually do. Aizawa-sensei shuffled inside the classroom wearing his garishly yellow sleeping bag, giving Hitoshi and Izuku a hard look. He scooted to the podium at the front of the room and unzipped.
"Today you need to pick a class president. Come to a decision before homeroom is over."
The man immediately got back in his sleeping bag and rolled under the teacher's desk.
Iida stood up, swinging his hands robotically and speaking above the heightened volume of the class. "We should cast a class vote!"
Sero chipped in. "But won't everyone just vote for themselves?"
"Exactly! So, whoever receives more than one vote will be the best suited for the job."
The class murmured in agreement and got to voting. Five minutes before the bell, they finished counting votes and the results were written on the board.
Midoriya: 5
Yaoyorozu: 4
Iida: 3
Izuku's eyes widened, but before he could say anything, the bell rang.
----
Izuku and Hitoshi didn't sit next to eachother at lunch like they usually do. Instead, they sat on opposite sides and ends of the table. Their friends sat between them.
"Congratulations, Midoriya!" Uraraka said, setting her tray on the table.
Izuku gave her a small thanks before shoving more food in his mouth.
"I honestly believe you were the best choice, kero." Tsuyu said between bites.
"I, too, voted for you, Midoriya!" Iida said, doing his arm motions.
Izuku swallowed. "W-why?"
"You are a great leader, kero" Tsuyu said.
"Yeah!" Uraraka added. "You were a great leader in the entrance exam and in the battle exercise last Saturday! You're also really nice!"
Izuku, lost for words, didn't know how to respond, if he was even able. Luckily, he was saved from answering by a very loud and piercing siren blaring through the cafeteria.
People around them started getting up from their seats and scrambling to the door. Soon enough, the hallway outside was crowded and people were shouting over eachother.
"What is going on!?" Uraraka shouted into the crowd.
Someone, presumably a second or third year, yelled back. "It's the intruder alarm! Someone has broken onto campus!"
Izuku, disliking crowds, edged away from the hoard before he could get swept in. Unbeknownst to him, Shinso did the same. From where he was at, he could see the front gate.
He could see the cluster of reporters clamoring through the gate.
He could see the teachers had it under control.
No one else could.
With a rush of determination, Izuku grabbed Iida's uniform sleeve and dragged him to the window. His point was made clear.
"We need to find a way to inform this crowd that the danger is gone, but how?" Iida said, surveying the mob of students stuck in the corridor.
Izuku tugged on his sleeve again and pointed to the ledge the doorframe of the hallway's emergency barrier created above the crowd.
"Excellent!" Iida said. "Uraraka, I require your assistance!"
In no time, Iida was pinwheeling into the wall and informing them the danger was naught; although, he berated them for their behavior in an emergency. The crowd calmed and dissipated.
Izuku could breathe.
----
On Tuesday, Izuku tried to give his class president status to Iida, but his robotic classmate refused.
"B-but, you w-were able to take con-ntrol of the sit-tuation w-way better than I w-was."
"Nonsense! Midoriya, you were the one who recognized the real threat and took action. You were the one who pointed out the way to inform the crowd. You are deserving of your title and I do not wish to take it from you!"
"Alright." Aizawa-sensei said, waving them away from the front of the room. "Tomorrow will be another simulation exercise. One that is appropriate for the current unit."
Izuku and a few other students brightened at the prospect of their teacher throwing shade at All might. Sadly, no other comments were given.
