Chapter 23 - when you wish upon a star...

The usual izuku stuff
___________________________________________

It was a week until their letters came in.

Hitoshi rushed over as soon as he got it from his questionablely legal P.O box. The two boys settled into the chairs around the dinner table, the now designated spot for heavy discussions.

Izuku's envelope was significantly larger than Shinso's.

On the count of three by Inko, the boys ripped open their letters. A metal disk fell out of Shinso's letter, accompanied by a transcript.

The disk blinked to life with a hologram message. In this hologram, All Might himself congratulated Shinso for placing in the top 20 of the exam, and announced his acceptance into the hero course. Izuku could see barely contained tears of joy in Shinso's eyes. It made him happy, regardless of the settling feeling of discomfort in potentially having All Might as a teacher.

Instead of a disk, Izuku's envelope contained several slips of paper, and for a moment, Izuku held some doubt about his results. The first was the transcript of his test and his acceptance.

----

Dear Midoriya, Izuku,

We of UA high congratulate you on your acceptance into the hero course. You placed in the top 10 during the exam with 450 points for your numerous rescues of examinees, leadership, skills, and overall heroic qualities. You are to be placed in Class 1-A.

The back of this letter contains your scores for each section of the exam.

Sincerely,
Nedzu

----

That alone had Izuku overjoyed. He doesn't think he could have enjoyed it as much if it was All Might saying the words he would have rather not said.

The second was his certificate for completing his online classes.

----

CERTIFICATION OF COMPLETION

Presented to:
Midoriya, Izuku

For successfully completing and passing Nedzu's comprehensive qualifying course.

Signed:
Nedzu

----

On the back, it read:

As a result of passing the course, if you would so choose, I, Principle Nedzu propose an offer to become my personal student. The course was designed with the intent of finding talented analytical minds, such as yours, and develop a wide range of talents. If you choose to accept, please contact me at Nedzu(at)UA.edu.

For a moment, Izuku just sat and stared at the document. There was just too much to process. Izuku had no idea that the course was designed by Nedzu. The utter shock he felt at seeing the signature left him speechless.

Shinso became worried at his expression. "Are you okay? What's it say?"

Izuku wordlessly handed the document to Shinso, who read through the whole thing only to be as speechless as Izuku, and handed it off to Inko. They all sat in silence for a few seconds.

"I think you are smarter than you say you are Izuku." Shinso said, "you even finished the course earlier than expected."

Izuku sat in silence for a few more seconds before replying. "Perhaps you're right..."

As an attempt to steer the conversation away, he picked up the third paper, only to realize it was not just an ordinary school letter. Izuku's eyes widened the more he read, concerning both people seated next to him. Wordlessly, he handed the paper to his mom.

----

Dear Midoriya Inko and Midoriya Izuku,

It is important to inform you that several months prior to this letter, a possible case of child abuse in regards to Midoriya, Izuku was filed by Pro hero: Eraserhead after he observed the boy's demeanor and interactions with other people in a chance encounter. The cause was quickly cut down to his school environment after a short period of investigation.

Since then, I, Principle Nedzu of UA High, and Pro Hero: Eraserhead have been conducting an investigation against Aldera Public Middle School and how the school treats its students. What we have found is downright unacceptable. We wish to know whether or not we can press charges on behalf Midoriya Izuku. I can not go into detail through letter, so a face to face meeting would be preferable to discuss options.

My contacts are:

NedzuPrinciple(at)qc.com

X-xxx-xxx-xxx

Sincerely,
Nedzu

After reading through the letter, Inko spoke. "I will negotiate the meeting. Do you want to come? If you don't, you can write what you want to say in a letter and I will bring it with me."

After moment of consideration, Izuku nodded. "I'll write a letter. I don't think I'm ready to talk about it yet."

Mom gave him a concerned but understanding look before continuing. "I believe that these are deserving of the Spirit board!"

Izuku groaned, "stop calling it the spirit board!"

"Nope," Shinso said, "The name is stuck now."

----

Nedzu got an email late in the afternoon.

MidoriyaInko(at)gc.com -

A face-to-face meeting would be appreciated. My son has told me that he does not want to attend the meeting, but will write a letter for me to bring regarding his feelings and requests on the matter. He has come a long way since I pulled him out, and he is excited for the new school year despite his past experiences. He also wishes to inform you that he accepts your offer to become your personal student.

That will be perfect. Would two days from now at 6:00pm work for you?

Yes.

----

Once Shinso and Inko had hung the letters on the Spirit board, much to Izuku's begrudgement, Inko left the boys  to their own devices. Izuku took this as the perfect moment to decide what to write in his letter to Nedzu.

The only problem was that he didn't really know what to write.

After a while of Izuku tapping his pencil and fidgeting, Shinso decided to offer some input. "Don't know where to start?"

Izuku sighed. "Yeah. I mean, there are a few people that I believe would benefit from therapy and sensitivity classes more than jail, but I can't grant that to everybody."

"How so?"

"Well, for the most part it was mostly isolation. I was only outwardly attacked and such by a small group of people. The teachers should be stripped of their licenses for participating in biased grading and ignoring the issue, but the students...."

"It's Bakugo, isn't it?" Shinso said, moving closer to where Izuku was sitting by the desk.

"Yeah." Izuku set down his pencil and lifted his feet into his chair. "It's just, he didn't have the same motivations for his actions like everyone else did."

Shinso offered his hand in a silent gesture. Izuku took it and started separating his fingers. "I mean, Bakugo was always stubborn, and everyone always said he would be the best hero from the moment he got his quirk. He has had that as his life's goal ever since, and when I offered the same goal with nothing he saw to back it, I think he felt.....threatened when I wouldn't back down."

"Enough to do what he did?" Shinso questioned.

"Enough that he said and did some things that he regrets." Izuku amended. "When I was....attacked, he was the one to step in and get them to stop. He even bandaged my back, all while having this sort of self loathing aura around him."

"He's the one that applied those bandages?" Shinso repeated, more to himself than anything. "Why in the world would he-"

"Because he doesn't have the best ability when it comes to emotions and social interactions. He was guilty, and he saw a way to help. It doesn't excuse everything that he did, or change the fact that I don't want to be near him, but it does explain his mindset."

"That being?"

"Bakugo didn't hate me because I was quirkless, he hated me because in his eyes, I was powerless and still kept getting back up to fight for my seemingly impossible dream. He saw it as a personal slight against himself, and developed a one-sided grudge that escalated."

Shinso hummed in understanding. "I'm still going to create every minor inconvenience under the sun for him if he is in our class. Do you know what to write now?"

"Yeah, and...oh-" Izuku paused.

"What's the matter?" Shinso said, concerned.

"He might be in our class."

The implications took a second to settle into Shinso's consciousness. "Oh no." Sensing Izuku's oncoming panick, he quickly tried to divert the flashbacks. "You won't be in the same class all the time, you have Nedzu's classes. Plus, you will have me there, and I'm sure that Nedzu wouldn't allow anyone to treat you like that ever again."

"I know, it's just-....I....when I think ab-bout it, ...my body just-" Izuku was forcing himself to take deep breaths.

"Shuts down?" Izuku nodded. "I understand. That happens to me too when stuff is too similar to how it was in the system."

"What-t do I d-do?"

"Think of something really absurd and unrelated."

"L-like what?"

"How about.....Is it possible to paint kamui woods like you would a house because he's made of wood? He obviously can't get regular tattoos, so would he get a carving instead?"

Shinso knew he was successful when Izuku started mumbling things along the lines of 'char art'..

----

A couple of days later, Izuku handed his letter to his mom before she left for the meeting. He and Shinso spent the time she was gone playing video games and watching movies. The restaurant was closed for the day, and Shinso was no longer being paid under the table at the gas station. Inko had offered him a job as soon as she heard him complaining about his sketchy manager.

In the midst of playing Animal Crossing: shoot for the moon, Shinso and Izuku got into a discussion about hero specialties.

"I'm just saying Mirko would be an excellent underground hero! She would do better in hearing crimes and espionage if she operated at night when fewer people are on the streets!"

"You're forgetting that Mirko is basically an adenaline junky, and most villains active at night are C and D ranks. She would get bored and impatient and most likely accidentally kill any villain she comes across. That's the reason she mostly sticks to strikes on organized crime as well as public patrols."

"Hmmmm. You have a valid point. Though, there is something to be said about her capabilities in rescue operations."

"True."

It was then that both boys heard the jangling of keys at the door. The door opened to reveal Inko, who's sullen expression lit up the moment she saw them.

She gave both boys a hug and smiled. "The meeting went well. Nedzu agreed to your terms." She ran her hand through her child's hair. "I'm proud of you." Izuku snuggled into her touch. "I know."
