Chapter 24: The Song Of Prophecy

The streets had grown noisier as the actual time of the events drew closer.

Zan and Zaria walked towards the event ground alone as Aran and Ateel had disappeared at some point on their way. There was a striking silence between them and Zan didn't know why.

"What's the matter?" He asked looking towards the abnormally quite Zaria.

"Huh," Zaria was drawn out of her partial dreamland by Zan's voice. "It's nothing" she shook her head.

'Do you think I'll believe you? A trouble causing mischievous imp stays silent for apparently no reason. What a joke.' Zan sneered.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Zaria frowned as she saw Zan's eyes on her.

"Is it really nothing?" Zan asked as he quietly avoided Zaria's question.

"Well, I was just thinking about the king and queen. You said they never had a child so who are you going to crown as ruler after you overthrow the current one?" Zaria asked, "Are you going to make the girl of prophecy your ruler?"

Zan's eyes went wide as he hurriedly closed Zaria's mouth with his hand.

"We don't know. We never thought about it." He said shaking his head. "But you should learn how to be more careful when you speak. No one will accept you taking about the next ruler so lightly so be cautious if you don't want to be stoned to death."

"Mm," Zaria nodded her head trying to push Zan's hand away.

Zan sighed as he removed the hand.

"I have one more doubt." Zaria folded her hands and asked in a serious tone. "Is the girl of prophecy even going to fight in this war? What if she rejects you?"

Zan felt like banging his head somewhere.

"Just don't speak anymore and I'll be careful before asking you to talk ever again." Zan fastened his pace as hurrying towards the event ground.

There was almost no space to walk as everyone tried pushing their way through. Zan grabbed Zaria's hand as she was almost dragged away by the moving crowd.

"I don't have time to waste looking for you, so stay close" saying this he dragged her along as he walked forward.

"Zan," Zaria tried stopping him as he pulled her hand. "Aren't we having a festival so why are we so serious?"

"It's not exactly a festival of celebration," Zan said tightening his grip. "It's just a reminder for us and a prayer for the future."

"So can I not have a BBQ?" Zaria pointed towards a nearby stall.

Zan felt like a fool for even trying to talk about serious things with Zaria.

"You want to eat BBQ while watching songs and plays?" Zan said, "You know people might make fun of you."

"Doesn't matter." Zaria shrugged her shoulders. "I just want to eat it."

"Alright," Zan said as he smiled and walked towards the stall with Zaria.

There weren't many people around the stall as it was almost time for the event to start. Zan paid and bought some sweet sauced BBQ for Zaria.

"Here" He handed it to Zaria who was almost about to jump on him and snatch it away.

"Looks so tasty," She caught it with both hands and bit on it making most of the juices cover her mouth. The paper wrapped around it was also wet as the juice seeped out.

"Can't you eat a bit more decently?" Zan sighed as he handed her a handkerchief.

"You know it's best to not think too much while eating." Zaria didn't bother taking the kerchief from him as she continued eating. "How can you enjoy the taste with all those formalities?"

Zan pulled her closer as he snatched the food from her hand and wiped her mouth.

"I'll only give it to you if you promise to eat it properly." He smirked.

Zaria glared at him without responding as if she wanted to drill a hole in his head with just her gaze.

"It's not going to work even if you glare at me for eternity." Zan pushed the food in front of her then pulled it back again with a grin.

Zaria frowned but finally gave up as she nodded her head agreeing to Zan's terms.

"Let's go attend the event now." Zan chuckled as he handed her the BBQ and dragged her back into the crowd.

They moved on until they finally could see a small wooden stage. It had over hundred wooden benches around it. Zan and Zaria found empty spots and sat down.

"How much longer do we have to wait?" Zaria asked still munching on her food.

"It's almost time." Zan pointed towards a corner where a group of teenage girls stood wearing gray war clothes.

The girls climbed the stage one by one as they made a war like formation on the stage.

"The war hasn't started and nor has it come to an end. We are all just waiting for the prophecy to come true so let's not forget what it says" A maroon haired girl came forward. "Let the song of prophecy ring." She raised her hand signaling the start of the group song. The crowd had settled by now.

"She will come when the leaves fade away,

She will come when the bodies buried at her birth decay."

The choir's melodious voice drifted in the air.

"She will come but no one will know.

She will be with everyone but no one will know."

The bonfire crackled bathing the singers in a golden light.

"She who is a sword within a flower,

She who is beneath a cover."

The chirping of crickets was the symphony of this song

"From old will she come

Along with her shall be her shield."

Somewhere far away the hooting of an owl was heard.

"Devoted to her with all her love,

A warrior beneath a shield."

There were a few sniffles but no one paid heed to it.

"Await, await oh people,

Await for this hope."

The audience was completely silent as if they were in deep prayer. The girls on the stage continued singing and their voice resonated all through the place.

"She shall call you,

She shall bind you.

You shall be willing to follow her,

Even without knowing her.

She shall prove her worth,

She shall win your trust.

She shall come to you and be among you,

She who is accompanied by the king of beasts."

By this part, everyone in the crowd was on their feet.

"Await, await oh people,

Await for this hope.

Although you don't know her,

You will still follow her.

Await, await oh people,

Await for her."

The group finished the song and climbed down.

Zaria stared at this cult like group and wondered how they could put so much trust in some prophecy which mostly didn't make sense. Although she knew that the song talked about her she still didn't want to believe in some prophecy with no authentic source. Who actually told this prophecy? Who knew that she would come all those years back? Was all this just a setup.

"Whatever it is it shouldn't matter that much." Zaria face palmed herself as she smiled.

Zan looked at her but let it slide and turned back his attention to the stage.
