5 Light Phenomena
POV Punzie
I was sketching to my notebook when we were in our History of Magic lessons. Sun had always been my favorite subject to draw, ever since I was kidnapped as a child. The Sun in purple background was my wizard family’s symbol. Of course I also loved how the actual sun makes things grow and warms your barefeet and you can walk on grass and.. Ah!
“Miss Rapunzel,” A voice speaks to me and I slowly lift my head up. I was just coloring the tenth sun I drew in last 5 minutes. “It is the start of the lesson and you’re already daydreaming?” Our teacher Milo J. Thatch just pushed his glasses further on his nose, glaring at me while holding a book. He touched his head while he lifted the light brown hair away from his face. “I am sorry professor,” I whispered. He was one of the teachers with professor status in this school of witchcraft.
Milo smiled and walked away, “Focus more from now on miss Rapunzel.” I watched as he went to write some stuff on the wall. He used his magic wand to write and show us things. I watched for some time but then my eyes felt heavy. I shook my head and then I wrote on paper the words, ‘Open the window, I am dying in here!’
I threw the folded paper to Kristoff who was closest to the window. He rolled his eyes after reading it but for my relief he nodded. When he opened the window I felt cool breeze of autumn air filling the room and it slightly waved my golden blonde hair. I sighed from relief, history always seems so dusty and boring, some fresh air refreshes things.
I watched outside from the window, sun was shining and clouds drifted on the sky in slow motion. Again I felt sleepy while watching the time literally dragging forward. I leaned my chin to my hand that I had resting against the desk. My head was literally nodding down each time when I almost fell asleep. “Miss Rapunzel,” Milo exclaimed from the front. “I am wide awake!” I squealed when I startle to his voice calling me. Whole class started to laugh. I sighed, and leaned my chin to my hand and I stared outside.
Now the subject had turned to the darkest part of the history, to you-know-who. My heart is aching since I remember that my kidnapper works for he-who-must-not-be-named. The person who kidnapped me was Gothel, one of the most vicious creatures in history. She is known for her methods of torture to have her way but I know that she can control minds in other ways also. For years she kept me in captivity, playing with my mind and it still makes me shiver.
I am a special type of wizard, one who is expert in healing magic. You-know-who needed me and my powers. I managed to escape with help of Pascal, he was Gothel’s elf servant. She tortured him all the time, the thought still hurts me. Pascal was a good friend of mine. There is one way to free an elf from his master, it is by giving him something to wear. I gave Pascal my hair ribbon which he wore with bride. Then one day after one of Gothel’s mind spells wore out Pascal came to me, wanting to help me escape. I was 10 years old then, been trapped for five long years. Sometimes I wonder if Gothel liked me actually since she brushed my hair every night and only used mind control and not her usual method, the torture. However I don’t know if mind control is better than torture.
I escaped exactly one year before I started my school in Hogwarts. Mother and father were so happy about me getting back. Sadness however darkens my path, my dear friend Pascal died while helping me. Elves can do magic, mostly transferring magic. It is the kind of magic that you use to move objects from place to another. On the night of my escape Pascal came to me and right when we were leaving Gothel arrived. She was furious and took something from her waist, throwing it at us while screaming. It hit to Pascal and when we were in another place because of Pascal’s magic I noticed that he wasn’t feeling well. He took me to my parent’s house and he died on our floor, his tiny hands holding onto the cursed knife, which stick out from his chest.
I swallow the lump from my throat and I stare outside. Just when I was about to close my eyes I saw something. Is there some sort of lights flashing inside the forbidden forest? The pain what I am feeling slowly turns into curiousness when I watch at the lights outside. What on earth is it? Everyone else seems to be interested on the lesson but I keep on watching outside. At least Professor Milo can’t complain about me falling asleep now. This sure is interesting.
For the whole day I saw the weird lights in the forest. They came in series, sometimes there was a longer break between the flashes of light. After lunch I pulled Elsa and Merida aside from other people who were rushing out from the dining hall. “Hey, what is going on!” Merida exhaled and I told her to hush. “I have seen weird things!” I gasped and Elsa looked curious.
Elsa hummed, “Something to do with Frost?” I shook my head, “No.. I mean I don’t think so. I have been seeing odd lights at the forest for the whole day!” Merida and Elsa glanced at each other, Elsa threw her silver and blue colored Ravenclaws scarf better around her neck. “Maybe we should check it out tonight?” Elsa smiled and then she glared at Merida, “Don’t tell Anna. It might be dangerous to her!” She snapped at Merida who frowned but nodded anyway as agreement.
Rest of the day felt like ages. I was so anxious to go to the forest. Somehow I feel attracted to lights, they were the only thing that I wished to see from my prison when I was a child. Only the light of stars or sun lightened the dark and damp cell that I was being held for five years.
Finally it was night time and I waited at Merida and Elsa behind of a tree. They should be here soon. I wrapped my scarf better around my neck, my fingers touched the soft surface that was colored with beautiful yellow and black that goes well with everything. I was feeling a bit cold in the fresh autumn night. It was the middle of September already.
“Psst!” I heard Merida trying to get my attention. She and Elsa had come in here finally. We were hiding in the shadows when we sneaked around Hogwart’s yard areas, slowly making our way towards the Forbidden Forest. I saw that in Hiccup’s cabin were lights still on, it was midnight already. I hope that he doesn’t see us. I mean he might be our age but he is a teacher of the magical creatures anyway. He might tell on us.
The forest was dark and silent, maybe too silent? My heart was pounding on my chest while I watched into the darkness. Moon was making it creepy, the moon made the tree shadows move on the ground like some dancing ghosts. I swallowed the lumpy feeling and I took out my wand from my pocket, squeezing it hard. “A-are you sure about this?” I whispered.
Merida sighed, “It was your idea on the first place Punzie! Don’t say that you guys are a little afraid of a simple forest?” Merida laughed and smirked. Elsa smiled and took out her wand. “Lumos,” Elsa said and her wand’s end started to shine from a bright light. She stepped inside the forest while her wand was lighting the way. It was a spell of light.
I did the same as Elsa did and I walked forward, following after Merida. “Just a forest.. more like a forbidden forest, “ I murmured. Merida looked over her shoulder and laughed. Then her eyes widened. They all noticed the same thing that I have seen for the whole day. The lights.
We all ran forward, almost tripping over on the tree trunks and rocks that were on our way. We reached in an open area where the lights were coming out. We all catch our breath and look at each other happily. Soon we will discover what the reason is. “Forward!” Merida yells in excitement and we all walk fast the rest of the way.
Whoosh. Whoosh. WHOOSH. THOMB!
“W-what was that?” I whispered and I turned around. There was something in the size of a rhino. Did it just land from air to my behind? I look at its wings and scales. From its nose comes smoke. “D-dragon!” I squeal and back up. I stumble on someone and I look over my shoulder. We are surrounded.
Merida and Elsa are staring at other dragons. And every dragon seems highly annoyed from our presence. “Watch out!” Merida yells and pushes us down when a two-headed dragon exhales fire that almost burned my hair. Elsa is rolling on the ground, I see how she glances quickly at us and then the threat that we are witnessing. No you don’t, I thought on my mind but it was too late.
“When I say three, then.. RUN!” Elsa yelled and she stood up, casted spells on the dragons to caught their attention. “Three!” Elsa yelled and she did a paralyzing spell on one of the dragons. It didn’t work because of their nature, dragons are highly magical creatures with thick scales. “C’mon!” Merida pulled me from my sleeve. I stumbled and fall when we ran. We ran and ran and soon we were out.
I look over my shoulder. Elsa isn’t coming after us. “W-we need help,” I whispered to Merida. We started to scream and ran towards Hiccup’s cabin. He is a teacher. Teacher’s help, I hope.
POV Jack
I glance over my shoulder before I go outside from the gates. “She isn’t following me this time,” I whisper to myself smiling when I realize that Elsa has given up. Finally, I don’t want her to be sniffing around. I lift the collar of my cape up to protect my face from the cool air, some rain drops slowly hit on my forehead and slide down on my face.
Knock. Knock.
The waiting is annoying as ever when I wait up behind of Hiccup’s door after knocking on it. I sigh and look at the clock, it is already 11pm.
KNOCK. KNOCK.
I hit the door harder with my knuckles this time. “Wait up!” Hiccup yells and I hear his steps closing the door. Soon he opens it and I stare at him, his messy looks. “Did you dive into furnace?” I ask from him when I push him from my way and I step inside. “Haha..” He makes sarcastic fake laugh, “I was just doing a new invention.” He then wipes his face to his apron.
“So.. My package is already two weeks late.. I wonder if you’ve used it yourself?” I whisper to Hiccup coldly and he shakes his head. “No, I am honest! I am sure that it comes tomorrow,” He smiles. I rub my forehead and I sigh, I knew that then it would be too late. Time for some hiding then.
“Want to know how my babies are?” Hiccup says happily and I glare at him. “No, I really do--,” I started but he was talking over me. “They are so big already! They all even breathe fire now,” Hiccup says in cheerful way. “
I roll my eyes, “So where are you hiding your dragons?” He looks a bit insecure while he looks at me. “Hey,” I sigh, “I wont tell anyone.” He smiles and he points out from his window, “They are in the forest!” My jaw dropped. “In there?” I exclaimed and I watched outside. Yeah, there was a glow of flames. Oh man do I hate fire.
Hiccup nodded and I shook my head. “Just hope that no one will spot their light show,” I smirked to Hiccup and he squealed. “Oh god! Didn’t think of that!” Hiccup was now pacing around the room and biting his finger nails. Then he stopped and stared at me, “Please! Help me move them to a cave or somewhere else!”
“Umm..” I stared at him and he seemed like a lost puppy. “Fine, I sighed and she ran to hug me. “Your best friend ever!” He laughed and my eyes widened. I pushed him further away from me, “We are not friends!” I hissed to him and he chuckled. “Yeah, you say what you say Jack,” Hiccup winked his eye to me.
God, time to go, I thought to myself after Hiccup babbling about friendship. I don’t want friends, I don’t need them. “I need to go now,” I said while opening the door. Actually I needed to get some things before I will hide. Without the ingredient I couldn’t prevent the eventual to happen.
After few steps I heard girls screaming, I watch over to my left. A redhead and a golden blondie. How lovely. “Help!” The redhead yells as they ran towards Hiccup’s cabin. “Need some spells to cure madness?” I mocked at her when she reached me. She punched my chest, “No you moron!”
“Ignore him Merida! We need to get teacher Hiccup or the dragons will-,” The blondie spoke but I interrupted her, “So you found dragons?” Hah, Hiccup’s try to hide them failed. The blondie nodded. Merida sighed, “We are losing time Punzie! They will burn her!” My eyes widened, “Is someone in trouble?”
“Yeah you idiot!” Merida snapped. “Elsa was left there when she protected us from dragons.” I sighed, “That stupid girl.” Then I ran to Hiccup’s cabin. “Your dragons are going berserk and attacking people! Happy now?” I yell to him before I start to ran into forest. I hope that I am not too late.
Some branches hit me on my face while I run. “Shit, not fast enough!” I yell and I whisper to the wind the plead of assistance. My body lifts up and a blast of wind sends me forward. I see her now, using protecting spells. She seems exhausted. An ice field shatters in front of her and she sends a body lock spell to that chubby dragon which falls to ground.
“Watch out!” I yell to her when I see a two-headed dragon sneaking its way behind of her back. My heart is pounding fast when I see the creature inhaling, gathering air inside its lungs and preparing to send a blast of hot and deathly flames. There is only one way now.
I fly as fast as I can, I reach her and I wrap my arms around her. I close my eyes to prepare for the hit and I heard her surprised sound just before I feel the flames burning my back. My eyes flash open and I scream from pain. At first it felt warm, then burning hot and finally cold as ice. It was like being sting by needles for eternity. It hurt so badly. The flame attack of the dragons feels to last for ages. Elsa glances over her shoulder and for a second our eyes met.
Then it stopped, the flames went off. I fall to my knees and my breathing is shallow. It hurts. My world is getting blurry but I hear Hiccup’s voice. He is ordering the dragons to calm down. What timing, huh. From my knees I fell to lay on floor, my body can’t move. I can’t get up. I see Elsa kneeling next to me just before I pass out. She is holding her hands over her mouth, she is in shock and crying but she is alright.
POV Elsa
He came and saved me when I wasn’t cautious enough. He took the hit that was meant for me, without him I would be laying in there. Jack Frost helped me, I see how his eyes close. His back is burned up, some bits are black but mostly it is bright red.
Hiccup rans to us. “I am so sorry, “ he looks at me. “I didn’t know that my dragons could behave like this and--,” then his words cut off when he stares at Jack laying on the ground numb. “W-what happened?” Hiccup exhaled and then looked at me. “H-he took the dragon’s flames on him, protected me,” I whispered and Hiccup gasped. “He took the flames? How is he alive then?” He stared now at Jack in misbelieve.
We carried Jack to Hiccups cabin. Merida and Punzie had went to bed chambers already since Hiccup told them to do so, promising that he will find me. When we placed him to bed I noticed that he wasn’t breathing anymore. “H-he,” I whispered and Hiccup checked Jack’s pulse.
“We need to give him CPR,” Hiccup gasped. I look at Jack who is now laying on his side so his burned back wouldn’t touch the sofa’s surface. I pushed him quickly on his back and I gave him mouth to mouth. “Please, don’t die! I want to thank you,” I said when I pressed his chest.
After few tries Hiccup was ready to give up. “Once more,” I cried and I pressed my lips against Jack’s. One more try. Soon he was gasping for air and breathing. “I did it!” I sighed happily and Hiccup laughed.
Soon I saw Hiccup staring at something weirdly. Did something just happen to Jack? I look at the direction where Hiccup is staring. I don’t know what just happened but Jack seems different. His brown colored hair is now changing to white and his skin is turning from fair to pale. He opens his eyes and looks at me. I am staring at a pair of cyan blue eyes.
Hiccup whistled, “Whoa, a spirit.” I glance at Hiccup and then at Jack who is now sitting. His back seems to be healed completely now. What is going on? “Oh no, no.. no,” Jack repeated as he jumped from bed and floated. Wait, he floated? Yeah he did, towards the mirror. He looked at his reflection from the mirror.
Suddenly Jack groaned, “I told you Hiccup that I need my package!” With shivering hand I took out my wand and point it at Jack. I casted a spell that locked his limps and now he fell to ground. “Hey!” He yelled and glared at me.
“Explain, spirit, “ I hissed to Jack who turned his head away from me. “A half spirit okay, a half spirit,” he whispered with heartbroken voice. “Well?” I crossed my arms as I stared at him. “My mum was a winter spirit and my dad a wizard. Pros and cons. While my mum only could control winter I can use her magic as well as being a wizard which she couldn’t,” he hummed.
I poked him from his chest, “Why do you change your appearance? You are working to you-know-who?” Suddenly he started to yell at me, “Hell no! That bastard caused my family to die! My mother killed herself so he wouldn’t have her powers to use. My dad remarried and had my sister but they too were murdered, right in front of my eyes!” Jack was panting, “Happy now you freaking coldhearted monster!”
Jack’s last words hit me. Coldhearted monster, he sure was right and had a good choice of words. “S-sorry,” I whispered but he was still breathing shallow, constantly looking at me angrily. “I change my appearance to stay hidden! I am the son of wizard Jeremy Overland and Aeria Frost who was a spirit of winter. What else you want to know? My favorite movies? FINE! I love science fiction!” Jack was screaming and crying at the same time while he mocked me.
Hiccup walked to Jack. He slapped him to face, “Chill out! Now is your chance to have friends.” Hiccup watched at Jack furiously. Jack shook his head and turned his body so he wouldn’t have to face us. “C’mon, she even brought you back to life!” Hiccup chuckled. Jack gasped immediately after hearing that. “N-no s-she didn’t,” Jack struggled in words.
A smirk lurked it’s way to Hiccup’s face when he told Jack that I gave him mouth to mouth. Jack seemed to be panicking now. “No, no..no.. not that!” I glanced at Hiccup wh’s eyes widened and he said simply, “Oh.” I gasped, “What did I do wrong!”
Jack is hitting his head against the wall. Hiccup cleared his throat, “You see that magical creatures have some special things in them. Dragons are resistant to magic but their flames are even more special. They can hurt spirits like winter spirits--,” Hiccup nodded towards Jack who sighed, “--badly.”
“And that has something to do with this how?” I stare at them. “Spirit’s are special beings, they control weather and winds depending what type of spirit’s they are, you should really read the book I have for lessons,” Hiccup glares at me. I sighed, “I will but please tell me what I did wrong?”
“Nothing really,” Jack commented coldly. “You just made a contract with him, usually it is used when spirit’s marry since the seal is eternal. However hundred years ago it was enough if people stole something personal from the spirit for the first time, then the spirit will be theirs to control.” I look at them both in misbelieve. “Touching my lips is kind of personal,” Jack whispered and I saw a slight shade of red on his cheeks.
Hiccup slapped my back, “Congrats, now you own a spirit.” My jaw dropped and I watched at Jack who was rubbing his wrists after the limp locking spell ended. “S-sorry,” I whispered and he rolled his eyes. “In one night everything goes wrong,” he whispered and rubbed his neck.
“How can you look like a normal wizard most of the time?” I asked from him when I sat next to him. “It is a potion actually, the delivery has been late,” I see how he glares at Hiccup. I scan him with my eyes, his hair is messy white and his eyes are deep shade of blue. “This is your actual appearance?” I whispered.
He nodded, “Yeah and you seem to like it.” He smirked and I now knew that he noticed my staring. “Believe what you believe,” I snapped to him. I saw a cup on table and a thought came in my mind. “Give me that cup Frost, it is an order,” I grinned and he stared at me. “Seriously?” He gasped and I nodded. He stood up, walked to the cup and brought it to me. “Don’t use me, please,” he whispered and I felt a sting in my chest. “I won’t” I clenched my dresses fabric.
“Thanks,” he smiled and offered me his hand. We shook each other’s hands. Now his skin felt even cooler than before. “I won’t be at lessons tomorrow,” he said to me. “I need to take the potion before that and it will come at night.. so.. mind telling the teachers that I am sick?” He cleared his throat and I nodded, “S-sure.”
After that I ran to Racenclaws chambers. Everything was so odd I thought to myself when I laid on my bed before falling to sleep.
