Vaso
“You don’t have to go, do you?” I whispered.
Mum looked at me, sadness dwelling in her eyes. “Yes, Vaso. We do.”
“Me and your mother,” Dad said, “think that this new life in Stratford will give us enough money to care for all of you.”
I was about to protest, but Mum cut me off. “If you want, Vaso, you can stay. Seventeen is old enough to care for yourself.”
I thought about it. Yes, I could buy an apartment and stay here as a janitor. Or I could go with my family to a town I’d never heard of and have to say goodbye to my childhood city. “I will stay.” I said at last.
Neither Mum nor Dad looked surprised. “I’m going to go talk to a real estate agent to see if we can sell the house.” Dad grabbed a coat. “Do you want to come to see if we can find you an apartment?”
I nodded. Mum said, “When you get back, help us pack. We want to be gone within days.”
“Okay.” I called behind me as Dad and I went to the car.
It was a short drive to the real estate agent’s offices. Dad went to talk to the receptionist; I plopped down in a comfy chair and grabbed a magazine: Plants For Life. Dad came beside me and sat, telling me that I was number 103, he being 102. I half-listened to the intercom call numbers. 99. 100. 101. 102; Dad stood and met a man in a suit and shook hands. The man took him back to an office.
103. I stood and saw a woman in a pantsuit coming towards me. We shook hands and she led me to a neat little office with ocean decorations.
“So, why are you here…” the woman checked her clipboard, “Vaso?”
“To, uh, buy an apartment.”
The woman nodded and opened a binder. In the binder was apartment flyers. She explained the bedroom count, square footage, and upgrades for the complex. After about twenty, one really caught my eye. Just one bedroom, it had a living room, complete kitchen, a closet, and free WiFi.
Dad came in, and looked at the apartment I wanted. He agreed that it was nice, and paid the real estate agent for it. She gave him the address. We both said thanks to her, and drove off to Vaso’s new apartment.
A.N. Yeah. I know. Not my best work.
