After a few drink from Molly's, Maddie had managed to rope in Sylvie Brett in helping her pick which paintings to hang in the space. She didn't know why she had asked the blonde paramedic or why Sylvie even agreed to accompany her. Maybe they both needed a face who was also starting new in the city of Chicago.

"Oh, Maddie." Sylvie gushes, carefully running her hands over a painting. "I like this one."

Maddie comes over to Sylvie and smiles at what she gesturing at. It was a painting of the beach in Miami—the one where her father taught her and her sister to surf despite their mother's apprehensions about it. Among the blue ocean wave, you could see three shadows of bodies: two little ones and a big strong figure.

"Thank you, Sylvie." She tells her, "I think this was the day where my Dad taught my sister and I to surf."

As the newest member of Firehouse 51 goes on about how touched she was that the new Mrs. Severide invited her for a day-out, the hair on the back of Maddie's neck goes up and she could feel a swell of nervousness in her chest. She feels a pair of eyes trained on her as if she was a lab experiment.

Maddie whips her head around the busy loft, trying to look past the different chattering artists and their potential clients. She knew what—who—she was looking for but Maddie wished she wouldn't find him in the area. Her brown eyes didn't seem to catch anything suspicious until they landed on a figure standing outside the glass doors. The familiar man was wearing a red coat and he still had his round-shaped glasses perched on his nose.

Without a second thought, Maddie's boots carry her over outside. She was thankful that one of the other artists started talking to Sylvie so that distracted her for a little while. Maddie pushes the glass doors open and is standing face to face with the man she had met at the grocery store a few weeks ago.

"Are you following me?" Maddie fumes, "I don't even know you!"

The man gives her a smile. "You just look a lot like my cousin. She died in a fire a few years ago. We were close."

"Oh." Maddie lowers the hands on her hips and looks at the man questioningly. So, what if she looked like his dead cousin? Not only was that weird but following her around was beyond out of the ordinary. "I'm sorry about your cousin but please stop following me."

Thankfully, the man nods. "Okay. Say hello to Lieutenant Severide for me."

This leaves Maddie baffled.

Kelly knew who this was?

─── 。゚: *. .* :. ───

It was quiet around the new Severide apartment. There were endless boxes all around which contained Kelly's things and Maddie's things (that were shipped from Miami). The couple agreed on some pieces of furniture like the coffee table and the pastel pink couch that Maddie was adamant on buying. Kelly left all the interior designing left to Maddie since he wanted the place to feel like a home to her as much as possible.

The kitchen was the first place that Maddie finished on cleaning up. There was a wooden table which could seat four people right at the center of it. This was where Maddie and Kelly ate their meals in the three days that they had moved in. They agreed that they didn't really need a dining table since it was mostly just the two of them and Kelly's occasional friends that stopped by. Although, if they did decide to start a family, they would need a bigger space. They hadn't even talked about that because they were presently both busy.

Maddie sat at their pastel pink couch in her pajamas and one of Kelly's sweatshirts from the Fire Academy. The encounter with the odd man earlier that day still nipped at her mind but it wouldn't stop her from unpacking one box. Something about that man was excruciatingly creepy. . .

The sound of the door opening and shut brings Maddie's attention to her husband who had just come home from his day with Gabby on an assignment. He didn't really disclose much about it and Maddie didn't pry.

Maddie pads her way over to him with a bright smile on her face. "Hello, my love!" She greets him after weaving her arms around his neck and giving him a kiss.

That was one of the things what he loved about her: it didn't matter if they'd been apart for two days or two hours—Maddie's warmth and happiness was just infectious and Kelly didn't mind getting infected one bit. Her kisses were also filled with the same excitement and passion and love when their lips first touched that one night in Vegas.

Kelly chuckles at his wife's cheerful tone. "Hello to you too, Mrs. Severide." He dips his head forward in order to meet her lips and he could taste the faint sweetness of strawberries.

After one last kiss to his jaw, Maddie escapes from his embrace and heads over to the stove. She grabs two plates and happily exclaims, "I made sisig!" By the tone of her voice, Kelly knew it was one of her favorite dishes.

That was another thing he loved about her: Maddie liked to eat and eat and eat especially pork. She often made him try dishes from her country, the Philippines. In the span that they had been married, Kelly felt like he had tasted the whole country and maybe even gained some weight since there were always leftovers. His favorite was Maddie's adobo and pancit palabok.

Kelly takes his shoes off and places his bag down. "What is sisig?"

Maddie shrugs and focuses on placing the food onto the plates without spilling it. "Oh, you know chili peppers and onions and. . .pork ears."

"Oh."

She turns to face him. "Or it could either be the liver. I just prefer the ears."

Kelly is sitting down and Maddie takes the stool at his left, their shoulders touching. She slides him his plate and the delicious aroma of pork fills his senses yet he couldn't take his eyes off of Maddie taking a spoonful of her dish. She chews for a few seconds and then her face breaks out into a bright smile.

"This is delicious! I have outdone myself!" Maddie proclaims victoriously.

"You know I love you, right?" Kelly blurts out.

". . .Yes. That's kinda what you feel when you decide to spend the rest of your life with a person you've talked for only a few hours."

He shakes his head. His body is facing hers as he pulls her stool closer to his. Kelly caresses Maddie's cheek and continues, "Madeline, I truly, deeply, irrevocably love you."

Maddie could tell he was sincere by the look in his blue-eyes. She felt touched by the confession but was quite alarmed by it because it was so out of the blue. "Kelly, is everything okay?"

It was not. Seeing Maddie happy and cooking him dinner made him realize how much was at stake when he was chasing down Shay's arsonist. In one hand, he wanted justice for his best friend and, in the other, he didn't want to ruin what he had. Once the alleged arsonist finds out he was being investigated, there was no doubt he would target Kelly or Gabby's family.

"Yeah. . .it's just the assignment." Maddie observes, waiting for him to continue. "Gabby backed out because she didn't want to endanger her brother or her family. Shay's death was an arson, Mads, I just know it."

Maddie gulps down her food. "Then, keep investigating, Kelly. The truth is bound to come out."

"You're not worried?"

She shrugs. "Aside from my constant worry of you running into burning buildings, I doubt that arsonist would go out of town and target your father, Kelly."

"Maddie, you're my family."

"Right. Of course. Well. . ."

"Say the words, Maddie, and I'll back out from the investigation."

"No."

Kelly raises his eyebrows, perplexed. "No?"

"No." Maddie huffs, "You go get that son of a bitch that killed Shay."

Maddie poked him in the chest and she had that determined look on her face—mouth pressed into a thin line, brows furrowed, and a new fire in her onyx eyes. Kelly thought she looked hot. He presses a kiss to her lips and he immediately feels it curve into a smile. "Yes, ma'am."

"Now, eat your pork ears."

They fell into comfortable conversation as Kelly told Maddie of the Peter Mills' first day at Firehouse 51. The guys on Truck 81 (namely Otis and Crus) dared him to ask Shay out and Peter had no previous knowledge about her sexuality.

"No way!" Maddie exclaims, "And he actually believed Crotis?"

"Uh-huh. Shay told him bluntly she was into girls."

"Man, I wish I could've met her."

Kelly looks down at his plate sadly. "She would've loved you."

By the sound of this, Maddie perks up. "Really? You think she would?"

His eyes scan over her and he smiles. "Of course and Shay would also chop my balls once she found out that I got married and she didn't take part in the planning."

"Yikes."

Kelly loved talking about Shay and he was grateful that Maddie didn't mind.

"By the way, your creepy friend said hi." Maddie tells him.

Kelly was by the sink and folding his sweater up to his elbows so they wouldn't get wet when he did the dishes. "My what?"

"Your friend. . .the one whose family died in a fire. He said that I looked like his cousin." Maddie continues. This time Kelly turns to face her, the half-washed plates and utensils forgotten.

"Did he have glasses? Thinning hair?"

". . .Yes."

"Shit." He curses. Kelly hurriedly grabs his bags and rummages through it and Maddie could only watch her husband's worried state. Soon, there were folders laid down on the dining table.

"Is everything—"

"That's him?" Kelly points to the open folder. Maddie shuffles closer and takes a look.

"Yes." That was the same man without a doubt. Maddie glances at the information and is able to have a glance at his name.

Adrian Gish.

The name sent shivers down her spine. She didn't know the man and only had a few "chance" encounters with him but, as her husband paces back and forth their living room and his fingers are dialing the freaking Chicago Police Department, Maddie knew there was something more sinister at play.
