6. Monday Morning

Monday morning rolls around quicker than anyone anticipated. Debbie knocks at Christopher and Caroline's door, ready to go with them to the church office to get their divorce so this can all be over.

She waits patiently outside the door until Caroline opens it and invites her inside the hotel room.

Debbie notices that Caroline is awful excited to see her this morning. She is practically beaming. She wonders if it is the post-wedding glow or if it is simply the fact that once Christopher and Debbie are divorced, Caroline will never have to see Debbie's face ever again.

Debbie is unsure which reason is behind Caroline's happiness but she couldn't quite care either way. As long as Caroline is not yelling at her, Debbie could care less.

Christopher grabs his things and escorts Caroline out of the hotel room. Debbie walks behind them like the third friend who does not fit on the sidewalk.

The three of them march down to the church Debbie and Christopher got married at two nights ago and walk straight to the office to file the divorce.

"We'd like to file for divorce please." Debbie smiles at the older woman behind the counter.

"Date of the wedding?" She asks, typing in her computer after pulling out divorce papers from a drawer and placing them beside her.

"Um, whatever Friday's date was." Debbie clutches the strap of her cross-body bag, rocking on her feet as she speaks to the woman.

The woman laughs and turns away from the computer. "Nevada has a 28 day mandatory waiting period for divorces. Come back in a month." She continues laughing as she types in her computer.

Christopher steps up to the counter. "Sorry. There's been a mistake. You see, we were both drunk and-" Christopher tries to explain when the woman sends them away.

"It's not my fault you two got married while you were wasted. It happens in here all the time." She slides papers over the counter at them. "Fill out the paperwork then send it back here in 28 days. Not a day sooner or it will be sent back. Then within two weeks, the divorce can be finalized by a judge."

Caroline steps up beside Christopher. "Do you even know who we are?!" She asks the woman.

The woman lowers her glasses beneath her eyes as she stares at Caroline. "No, and I don't quite care who you are either."

"He is Christopher and I am Caroline. We own the casino across the street." Caroline informs the woman of their importance. The clerk looks at the girl, unsure of what relevance her story has to this conversation they are having. "Well we just got married on Saturday night and we can't sign the official papers until this sticky little divorce gets settled."

The woman laughs at Caroline. "I see people like you in here all the time. They want a quick divorce so they can get married to who they really love and not the one night stand they stumbled in here with. They forget that once a divorce is filed, each spouse gets half of the assets. So what I'm hearing is that the little girl behind you is going to own one half of that casino across the street in 28 days but you only care about signing some papers." She slides the papers over to Caroline. "Congrats on the weddings. Both of them."

Debbie takes the papers and folds them before sliding them into her bag. She quietly thanks the woman for her time before they all exit the building. "Well," she sighs when the door shuts behind them. "That could have definitely gone better."

Caroline clutches Christopher's arm. "That woman was right in there, babe."

Christopher sighs. "About what?"

"In 28 days when you two get the divorce, Debbie gets half of everything. Including the casinos. We need to get a lawyer." Caroline suggests.

Debbie throws her hands up in the air. "I don't want the casino. I don't want anything. I want this to be over just as much as you do. Seriously, I don't want your money."

"You say that now, but in 28 days when you see the money, you will feel differently. You don't know truly how much money we have, do you?"

Debbie laughs. "You bragging about how much money you guys have isn't making me want it less. You aren't making a very good case for yourself. If I wanted to take your money, I'd want even more now."

Caroline rolls her eyes at Debbie. She can not believe this child will not want a single dollar from Chris. "We need to get a lawyer." Caroline turns back to Christopher.

"We don't need a lawyer, Caroline. We just need to wait 28 days. Debbie doesn't want anything from us. She just wants out."

"Yeah, I just want out." Debbie confirms what Christopher said. "And a million dollars for my silence." She stares at Caroline.

"Done." Caroline pulls out her checkbook.

"Oh my gosh I'm kidding!" Debbie holds her hand over the checkbook. "I'm totally kidding."

Author's note: I love this story so much. I've decided to make it a full length story rather than a short one. Yay!

I think Debbie is my all time favorite character that I have ever created.
