Chapter 20 - Collision (Ash)

I snapped out of a daydream to hear shouting. I snapped up my head and looked across the basketball court. Kenny, Gary and Drew were all shouting at eachother about something and I couldn't figure it out. They all turned in opposite directions and walked off. Gary came over to us, Drew and Kenny went home.

"Those guys. Some stupid argument about the rules. I told them both to calm down and then they got all mad at me" Gary threw his towel into the bench. He was clearly pissed.

"I don't even know why it got so serious" Gary continued to moan.

Cilan, with all of his wisdom cleared his throat "They both take the sport very seriously. Maybe it's because the other refused to admit they was wrong" Cilan always made the good points.

"So what do we do?" I asked, getting up off the bench.

Cilan pulled out his phone "We find out who was right and make amends"

He began typing away, searching for a 'back-court violation'.

"Well, they was both right, kind of" Cilan showed Gary and he nodded in confirmation.

"Well I gotta go, seeing Serena" I said, waving goodbye. About halfway down the road I began daydreaming.

If school on monday starts with Drew and Kenny fighting, then they're seriously going to ruin their friendship. I don't want Dawn getting involved, either.

I was snapped out of my daydream by someone standing in my way. Josh.

He stood with his arms folded and looked at me. He was so close I could feel his breath on my neck as he spoke.

"You missed a detention on friday" He said plainly.

"Tsk, I went to see my girlfriend instead of go to some fake detention, now if you'll excuse me" I tried to step by him, but he moved infront of me.

"I like seeing you suffer, Ash and I intend to make that happen" He whispered coldly.

I almost burst out laughing "Make me suffer right now" I threw my arms out to challenge him.

He waited for a moment before throwing a punch. I side stepped and things went from bad to worse. He stumbled onto the road and infront of a car. The driver swerved to avoid him but another car came by and they collided.

I collapsed into a sitting position on the pavement, in total shock. Other witnesses ran over to help and someone called the emergency services. Throughout the whole ordeal, both me and Josh watched in horror as people, some looking worse for wear, were carried into ambulances or attended to on the ground. A little girl was in serious condition and needed an air ambulance.

I was lost for words and was as still as a statue. Was it my fault for moving out of the way? I tried to provoke Josh and it cost two families so much. A tear escaped from my eye as i finally found my way to my feet. I slowly began to walk off. Screw any witness statements or questions from other people. I headed straight to Serena's.

"Ash?" Serena questioned as I walked through the door "What's wrong?" She sat beside me and put a supportive hand on my shoulder.

"I just-" I choked on my words, finding it difficult to bring it out.

I gave myself a minute before trying again.

"I think I just caused a car crash" I looked at the floor, remembering the little girl going into the helicopter.

I slowly explained what happened and just snapped. Tears flooded around me as I put my head on Serena's shoulder. She couldn't even react to what I just said, so she stared into space in complete silence.

A few days passed and I was still haunted by the weekend. For the sake of everyone, Drew and Kenny deemed their fight immature and moved on. I lost all interest in everything. When it came to practice tests in class, I failed every single one.

One day, my Mom brought the results to me "I know you went through a lot last weekend but you need to get your head around your schoolwork. The hospital will make sure they're all ok. You be strong for the people in the accident, ok" My mom gave me a motivating smile and I reassured her with a smile.

I needed to make sure I was ready for my exams. There was no way I was going to fall behind, so I began studying early.
