Chapter 14 - The past catches up (Ash)
Any monday morning that felt like I was in hell signalled that I was back in school. Christmas had been and gone, so that must be the topic of the day. I checked outside to see if my Mom was gone and she wasn't. I picked up the shining gold watch and slipped it onto my right wrist. I held it up to my face to check the time. It was only 7am so my mind said five more minutes but my body made me move downstairs.
"You're up early, Ash. Excited to go back to school?" My Mom was trying to make me feel excited but I slumped lazily into my seat by the kitchen table and rested a hand under my chin.
"Yeah, sure" I said in a half sleepy voice.
She laughed and turned with some fried bread in her hands. She put the bread on a plate and put it infront of me.
I woke up fully after smelling it and began eating like it was going out of fashion.
"You know, there is a new girl at your school and I think you might be happy to see them" My Mom teased.
I stopped eating and looked at her, confused, with some bread hanging out of my mouth. I scooped up the bread and thought. Happy to see some new girl?
"Why?" I asked finally.
My Mom wasn't telling me anything useful "You will have to find out yourself" I think she was smiling so hard her lips could fall off. I shrugged and ran upstairs, heading to the bathroom. I got changed and decided to put the t-shirt Serena had given me for Christmas on. It would be a bit embarrassing but I didn't care. I threw my plain black t-shirt onto the laundry pile and headed downstairs. I grabbed my bag and opened the door. My Mom followed close behind.
"Have a good day at school" She said as she headed to the car.
"Have a good day at work mom, bye" I said, walking down the street. I made it to the bus stop 5 minutes before the others.
After sitting and waiting, Drew finally arrived.
"Wow, Ash. You're here, early? I thought I would never see the day" Drew grinned and sat down beside me.
"What did you get for Christmas?" I asked him, looking around for Dawn or Serena.
"Some new Basketball posters and video games, mainly" Drew shrugged, I guess he wasn't too bothered.
"I got a load of candy and chocolate" I said and he looked a little jealous.
"Also, I got this" I held up the watch and he stared at it with amazement. I unzipped my jacket "And this, from Serena" He stared at the photo on the t-shirt and laughed a little bit.
"Guess Serena's been treating you well, that watch is amazing" He was staring at it again.
"One of my favourite presents" I smiled as Dawn walked up.
"Morning, Dawn" I said, nodding.
She had that look like she was hit by a bus "Ash, you're..." She stopped mid sentence.
"Early..?" Drew finished and she nodded.
"God, it's not like it's the end of the world" I sighed and moved up for Dawn as Serena came over.
"Morning, guys" She said, sitting down beside me.
"Good morning" I replied, kissing her on the cheek.
"You're up early" She grasped my hand and the others chuckled.
"Will everyone stop commenting on that, please" I laughed nervously.
It took another five minutes before the bus arrived. Think I'll stick to being lazy from now on.
We got to school and the topic was different than expected. I could hear new girl this and that from other 10th graders. My Mom was right, but who was it?
We got to our usual spot and Josh was talking to our friends.
"Yo, Ash!" Gary nearly screamed and was close to knocking me over.
"What?" I said, a bit freaked out.
"Josh said this new girl was your girlfriend in Pallet Town. Sarah I think?" As Gary said this I think my heart stopped beating. She was here? Surely not.
Just then a voice so similar yet different said my name like it was a question.
I turned to see Sarah stood there and I smiled. It was two years ago when I saw her and she looked completely different, minus the jet black hair that was as long as ever.
"Sarah?" I asked and she ran up and put her arms around me.
I returned a friendly hug and could feel Serena's jealousy. I released the hug and scratched my head.
"It's been 2 years, wow" I said, in a bit of shock.
She handed me a piece of paper with her number on it.
"A cup of coffee wouldn't hurt" She winked and walked off, presumably to get her timetable.
A problem struck in my head. I spent 3 years with Sarah and felt the same way with her as I did with Serena. I felt like I had two girlfriends. I reached out for Serena's lingering hand and took it. I was still in shock.
"Why would she move here?" I asked myself in my head.
"Well, looks like there is some competition" Iris said, with a little smirk.
"Oh, there is no competition" I looked down at Serena and smiled "You're the only one for me" She blushed a little and hugged my waist. The bell rang at this moment and as we headed to math I clutched the piece of paper in my hand.
We had two years of catching up to do.
