Chapter 5 - Where His Loyalty Lies
(Drew)
Kenny drove up in his Chevrolet Camaro, showing off as usual. We ended high school roughly 3 years ago, but I didn't get into the college I wanted. That's when Kenny showed up at my house and offered me a job, working with his dads company. His dad was a very rich man that owned a whole chain of fast food restaurants across the US. Me and Kenny were both supervisors, working in the same restaurant. It was an easy job with a big pay, but sometimes, especially when customers became very vocal and started complaining, the whole thing could be a little bit too much and I would go home with headaches from all the shouting.
"Whad'ya think?" Kenny's voice had too much boasting in it, I just inspected the car and ignored his tone.
"Yeah, nice" I nodded, liking the colour of his car. He had gone for black, with two parallel racing stripes across the car, in white.
"Work has been a pain lately, so many people have been complaining. I think we might have to look to hire new people and change our staff" Kenny suggested as I hopped into the passenger seat.
"Well, it is a fast food restaurant, so we are always bound to get trouble. We just need to hold a staff meeting and warn everyone, try and make things okay again" I replied, opening the glove box. I was happy to see a pack of chewing gum and I took a piece without asking. Kenny didn't say anything as he also took one, before I shut it.
"Well, we are heading over their right now, so if you want I will handle the meeting while you quickly make sure there are no customers around so you can quickly lock up"
"Sounds like a plan" I nodded, just as Kenny revved up the engine and sped off, the engine booming through the streets as we made our way to work.
It didn't take long before we was finally parked up around the back of the restaurant. I got out and headed round to the front, while Kenny went through the staff entrance.
"Ok, we are having an emergency staff meeting and I will need all customers to leave. I am sorry for the inconvenience" I said, trying my best to be polite. A few murmurs came from different sides of the restaurant, but everyone eventually left. Kenny collected the staff and then they went into the back room.
A few minutes passed and a girl about my age walked in, a look of confusion on her face. I was sat casually on the table opposite the door and my eyes instantly fell over her. She looked so beautiful. Her light brown hair in a ponytail, yet it still hung down her back. How long must her hair be? Her amazing, sparkling hazel eyes stared back at me and I came back to planet Earth at that moment.
"Oh, uh-sorry, we are closed for the moment" I finally recovered, mesmerized by this girl. Why was someone like this in a fast food restaurant?
"I was hoping for some fries too" She frowned, looking clearly upset. I couldn't leave someone like that sad, I actually felt a random urge to make her happy, like it would somehow make us friends.
"I'll make you some" I offered. She stopped at the door and turned around.
"But, you're closed? And you look like a supervisor, so you probably can't make fries" She said bluntly, holding the door handle and preparing to leave.
"No need to be so blunt" I huffed, before hopping of the table. "Who cares if we are closed, I can make some pretty mean fries"
She smiled and then walked past me, to the counter. "In that case, surprise me"
Halfway through preparing the fries, the point were I had to do nothing but wait, I turned to the girl to try and make some more conversation.
"So, uh, what is someone like you doing here?" I asked, hoping I wasn't coming off as rude. She frowned and I felt so stupid.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Well...How do I put this? You look like an A-class model, someone who truly cares about her image. I didn't expect someone so...so..." I couldn't think of the word to say, god I am not smooth. I felt like facepalming myself, but her cute laugh broke my thoughts.
"I understand what you mean. Thanks, I guess" She smiled once more, making my heart jump out of my chest. STOP MESSING WITH ME, my brain said.
"Well, they are ready, so here you go" I said, placing the fries into a packet. As I brought them over, I nearly slipped and was so close to dropping them all. Me and my god damn nerves. This brought a laugh from the girl.
"Thanks alot...?" She stopped, gesturing for my name.
"Oh, I am Drew" I said, smiling back at her. She took the fries and instantly bit into one.
"You make good fries Drew, I think I will ask you to make mine next time too" She teased, before walking out. The first thought that entered my head was if she was going to come back again. She did say next time, so maybe I have a chance!
"Drew? Was you just serving someone?" Kenny's head popped out of the door and I nodded.
"She was sooooooo hot man!" I said, emphasising the 'so' as much as I can.
"This is the first time I have ever heard you say that Drew, you must have something wrong with you now" Kenny shook his head and entered the staff room again.
Two Days Later...
"Why has it been so empty today" Kenny moaned, randomly cracking his fingers like he was hard at work.
"I can't believe you literally made us work shifts Kenny" I moaned, placing the cap on my head on the side. "I thought you were just warning everyone that their jobs were in jeopardy?"
"Well, I did. But then someone suggested that we do some shifts to see it is hard" Kenny sighed. I could tell he was annoyed but we had to suck it up. Then the door opened.
The same girl came in from two days ago, looking better than last time. I turned to Kenny, who was frozen, he too staring.
"Hey" I said, leaning on the counter. "Guessing you're here for some famous fries by Drew?"
"Oh, so they're famous now?" She retorted, with a little smirk.
"You bet, no one makes better fries than me" I boasted, poking myself in the chest.
"I'll hold you to that the next time I have fries from somewhere else"
I instantly got to making them, while Kenny snapped out of his trance and had started doing some cleaning.
"I guess you're not the supervisor, huh?" She randomly asked, which kind of made me feel happy. She was conversing with me.
I laughed and took off the apron. "I am supervisor, just like my buddy Kenny, who is the one avoiding us and cleaning in the back"
"Why do you both work in the kitchen then?" She looked around for a moment "And where are your staff?"
I scratched the back of my head and explained the situation.
"Oh, so you are both trying to see if the job is hard?"
"Basically," I said, checking on the fries every so often.
"Well, it shouldn't be a problem with your fries," She said jokingly and I couldn't help but laugh a little bit.
"It shouldn't. The only thing I have found difficult so far is taking orders"
"Why's that?" She continued to ask questions, but for once I didn't mind someone asking so many.
"Because no one has shown up today since we opened"
"I thought you were ACTUALLY struggling, that would've been weird" She admitted, with a small nod to herself.
"Say, I never got your name.." I changed the subject and finished her fries.
"I am Georgia, like the state" She replied, smiling once more.
"A nice name for a nice girl" I nodded, clearly trying to hard. I think she could tell I was being an idiot.
"Since you have been so nice to me..." She paused, getting out a pen and paper. She wrote down something and handed it to me. "Give me a call" She winked, before taking her fries and disappearing out of the door.
I stood and stared at the piece of paper in my hands, as Kenny finally came back.
"Erm, I call dibs?" He said jokingly, staring over my shoulder.
"Kenny, I am not sure, but I think I may have found what I was looking for," I said to myself, still staring at the number.
I instantly thought that she was someone I would love to spend time with and it felt like God was answering my prayers, letting me have my chance. I wasn't sure about Kenny, however. He too had the same reaction as me, so I would just have to keep an eye on him from now on. Who knows, maybe one day, this girl will be my wife?
