Chapter 4 - Policing The Soccer Team
(Calem)
After around an hour of looking around, nothing suspicious turned up at all. I met Gary in the middle of the field, just as the soccer team was entering for practice. He nodded at me and I knew what we had to do, so we moved to the coaching staff with our badges out.
"We would like to ask a few questions please" Gary didn't ask, he said to the coaches. They all looked at each other in silence, which raised my suspicions.
"Well, go ahead then. We have nothing to hide" The oldest one said, which clearly suggested they had something to hide. They could probably tell we was amateurs, but if I had learnt anything from Cilan it was to always stay open minded and think of every possibility, even if it was just some sort of drugs scandal.
"We have had several reports of a possible drugs scandal going on in this area. More specifically, someone has told us that they witnessed the soccer team transporting various amounts of drugs such as marijuana. So we want the truth, what is going on?" Gary got straight to the point and the coaches fell silent again. I could already tell something was up.
"W-We..I uh-" One of them tried to speak, but the old man stepped forward again.
"We haven't been doing anything of the sort, where is your proof for this?" He asked, clearly trying to hide the facts.
"We have been sent video proof of the transportation, in fact I just received the message from my boss, so..." Gary held up his phone with the video playing and I could already see the tiny amounts of sweat forming on their brows.
"What's going on coach?" One of the kids walked up to us, he had an armband on so he was clearly the captain.
"Nothing, just go and wait over by the benches and do your stretches" The old man said, so he was their coach then.
"Are these men hassling you? He hasn't done anything wrong" The boy pleaded. Now it was my turn to step in.
"Until we have finished our questions, I have to ask you to step away please" I stood in front of the kid. He was about half my height and looked up with a scowl, before walking off in frustration. I span on my foot to face the men one more time.
"Ok, we have no choice but to confess. There has been a secret crime syndicate acting in the area" The coach finally admitted. "They threatened to kill us if we didn't help them, so we had no choice but to transport there supplies"
"So, you haven't been selling, buying or using these drugs, they have only been in your possession?" Gary asked, for a final confirmation. There was a firm, serious nod from the coach. His face said it all, he was definitely telling the truth. Gary was the one to ask the questions and be a little rough, so I suppose he was the bad cop. He also didn't have the brains so I had to step in again.
"He is telling the truth" I indicated to the man and then Gary gave me a small nod.
"How can you tell if I am telling the truth?" The man asked, slightly puzzled as to how I knew.
"I can see it in your face. A firm, yet serious nod followed by no emotions. That is the face of a man who doesn't lie when asked a serious question" I explained and then Gary couldn't help but smile.
"Throughout our time in the academy, it was a trait he picked up. Studying psychology has its advantages I suppose"
"So you are both new officers?" The man asked out of interest. We nodded and then he smiled. "It is nice to see some honest lads working for the police nowadays. I am sorry for the trouble we have caused"
"Don't sweat the small stuff. We will be contacting you again to one, have all the drugs taken away and two, issue a written warning regarding this incident, because it is still against the law to have drugs in your possession, under any circumstance. If our boss decides any further punishment is applicable, then you may be fined" Gary explained their options and the coaches seemed please.
"We fully understand. What are you going to do now?"
"Well, do you know where this syndicate operates?" I asked, my trigger finger getting itchy. I had a weird feeling that something was going to go down.
"They have a corporate building, two blocks down south, it is the only office building on the whole block, you will see it" The old man happily gave us the information. We exchanged goodbyes and then parted ways. While we headed back to the car, we discussed the issue.
"Seems like you're becoming bad cop" I joked, with a little grin.
Gary threw a pair of shades over his eyes and kept a straight face. "This isn't a movie, Calem. We don't live a cliché lifestyle"
"Yeah, whatever. You're the one throwing shades on and trying to look good while on the job"
"Hey! Don't patronise me and my good looks" Gary said defensively. I just laughed.
"Just get in the car" I shook my head and then changed the subject. "What are we going to do now?"
Gary was already tinkering with the radio. "Contact for a little bit of assistance, in case things go wrong and we need help"
"Sounds like a plan" I nodded in agreement and let Gary handle the rest. He called for assistance at our destination and then drove off there. I got out the gun from my belt and checked it.
"What are you doing?" Gary asked, catching a glimpse of the gun.
"I have a gut feeling they won't want to talk. Crime around here has been on the rise lately so I was just preparing myself" I said, tucking it back into my holster.
"We haven't ever shot at people before. This might just feel like a movie!" Gary's inner child spoke out and he sounded excited.
"Yeah, just try to not play the hero and get shot" I said, with a joking smirk.
"Whatever" Gary smirked and then parked up outside the building. Two other detectives stood outside and we walked in. There was two man stood like bodyguards, with a receptionist in the middle sat at her desk.
"How may I help you fine gentlemen today?" She asked, with a bright smile. Her face dropped as soon as we raised our badges.
"We are here to conduct a search of the premises and also question your boss, if he is around?" Gary asked nonchalantly, looking left and right at the two bodyguards, who now had scowls.
"Why would you be doing that?" She was acting all innocent.
Gary slammed his hands onto the desk and looked at her with menacing eyes. "Cut the crap lady, we know what is going on here. Just take us up to your boss and that will be that" The two bodyguards moved for Gary, but our back up stepped beside either side of Gary, stopping them.
The lady rolled her eyes and pulled up her phone, before calling someone. "We have the police here to see you...Ok...Yes, I will send them right up" Her face seemed to change to a sly grin, which clearly indicated that they was planning something. A trap maybe?
"Lets go then" Gary said before the women could say anything else. We headed to the elevator and pressed the top floor button.
"How do you know he will be on the top floor?" One of the other detectives asked.
"It's just something I like to call a detectives intuition. You watch a lot of movies and go places and it just becomes obvious" Gary had prepared for the question, because he answered within half a second of being asked. The two others looked at each other then looked at Gary and me, intrigued by our capabilities, I suppose. We was only on our first job, but we was handling it like experts. I thought we was anyway, but I have always been modest.
The elevator pinged and of course, the boss was sat at a big desk at the end of the room, with several bodyguards around him and two at the elevator.
"Come in. Let us talk" He said all casual.
"We have been investigating a recent drug scandal and the coaches of the soccer team have claimed you are the ones in possession of the drugs and also are selling and using them" I stated the evidence. It was, without a doubt, concrete evidence. The boss just grinned and stared back.
"Oh dear. The last detective to find out about us lost his life. Men, you know what to do" Their boss order. As if on cue, several guns had been drawn and pointed our way. We reacted instantly, each of us pulling out our guns and going back to back to face each direction. "I am afraid this investigation will be cut short"
Before anyone could move, I looked at Gary and in that split second before the syndicate members fired their guns, we moved in sync, stepping forward and grabbing the arms of the ones guarding the elevator. I twisted both of his arms around and then up, snapping them both like twigs. The man yelled out in pain and fired his gun into the air. Before anyone could react, I had disarmed him and then gone round the back, pointing my gun at him like a hostage. Gary had done the same and both men continued to wince in pain, due to their arms being broken. Silence filled the whole room. God, I was going on and on about not being cliché but here we was, literally being in a film.
"If anyone fires a gun, we have permission to retaliate with extra force. This is your only warning" Gary said from behind the man. Our back up continued to keep their guns pointed at the several other bodyguards.
"We don't take threats lightly. TAKE THEM OUT BOYS" The boss ordered, staying in his seat. Time began to slow down as I dropped the man I was holding. He couldn't fight with two broken arms anyway, so I was safe. I drew up my gun, lining up the aim and preparing to fire when time resumed to its normal speed. Gun shots rang out around the area, blood flying into the air. Then, everything went black.
Two Hours Later....
I awoke to the sound of a monitor beeping. As soon as I opened my eyes, I realized I was in a hospital.
"You're awake!" Gary said, seemingly happy. He had stitches up his forehead, suggesting to me he was cut by a knife. "You got shot in the stomach twice, so it was no surprise that you would be out for so long. They removed the bullets and patched you up. Luckily, there was no internal bleeding or organ damage, so you just have to stay in for a little longer" Gary explained the situation.
"So what happened, did we get em'?" I asked, wondering how everything went down. Gary shook his head.
"I got cut pretty bad and our backup got out unscathed. We left because you got shot and I am guessing the boss is already out of town, so we have lost the perp" Gary sighed, sitting down next to me.
"It's ok I suppose. We can just relay our evidence to the neighbouring states and cities, they will be caught. Plus we got a good look at his face, so I bet we can get some proper identification going.
"The boss wanted to speak to us once you got better, so be prepared for that" Gary warned me. To be honest, I wasn't sure if it was a bad thing or a good thing, to be in the hospital bed. I suppose it was gods way of warning me of the dangers if I was careless and went straight in, trigger happy. I suppose it was for our old friends. Ash, Kenny, Drew. I wonder how they was all doing. After all, we suddenly stopped meeting up around two years ago. Drew and Kenny became increasingly quiet. As for the girls, well that's another story. I was just glad to me alive. I was ready to fight another day. The adventure with Gary was only just beginning and I was ready to go every step of the way with him as my partner.
