Chapter 6~Choices All Our Own
Within the next few days Rosa and Carla found themselves with help from Mariana as her scarred body pulled weeds and crops from the garden. Mariana had made Ethan stay inside and help Rosa as if to protect him from them more. Within days Ethan found himself attached to Mariana's orders like a child to their Mothers. To Ethan, he would go with her. To Mariana, he was staying here.
"So," Carla said as Mariana and Ethan sat down at the table, "You two have been here for a while. What do you plan on next?"
"I have to go and finish my job..." Mariana said quietly, "Could he stay with you?"
"No," Ethan said, "I want to go with you."
"It isn't safe," Mariana said.
"But-" Ethan fought on. Clearly annoying Mariana as she stood up and pulled his chair up out.
"No buts. Now come." Ethan did nothing but stand up and follow slowly. Fear shook him slowly as he treaded along, but that never stopped him. He marched behind Mariana with a power all his own. Still shaking, but seemingly confident.
Outside Mariana had taken him to the garden and sat him down on a stone bench, carved with deer in a forest. Ethan lightly and nervously traced his hands along the carvings as Mariana sat down with a sigh. Her voice quiet and worrisome as she spoke, "You want to come with me?" Ethan nodded violently which stopped when Mariana held out the drive that had caused it all. "You see this? You remember this? This is not what you will follow. You follow me, you follow this." Ethan backed away a bit, scared by her words as she let out another sigh. "My family... I watched everything be pulled out from under, not just me, but them as well. My Father was... He..." Her eyes began to water as she pressed her palms into them. Ethan moving forward again. Less scared, more worried. For in the eyes of a boy to his age, grownups do not and cannot afford to cry. "Because of this..."
"Then get rid of it," Ethan said taking her arm in his small hand. Mariana moved her hands and smiled lightly.
"Not that easy Ethan... not that easy," She replied, "This drive is what could be keeping my family alive. See... it's like this..." Mariana tucked the drive back around her neck and bent down to the ground. Drawing circles and writing in the dirt. Two circles at the top. One marked F, the other marked M. Then there were three more circles drawn down from that. One with a C, one with an M, the other with no letter at all. "These circles at the top, they're my parents. F is my Dad. M is my Mom. Then these three... this is me and my brothers. C is the oldest one, M is the younger one. Then this blank one is me." She began drawing away from them but kept them connected a few to her Father's with dotted lines. "These people, are my Dad's adopted family."
"What's that mean?" Ethan asked jumping down next to her.
"It means they're family, but not by blood," She answered and finished their circles. One with a Z, another with an S, then one with an M. "The same with my Mom. But she only had an adopted sister." She drew another dotted line from the circle labeled M that was labeled I. "So basically, this is my family. Before we were happy. My adopted family just left, they didn't exactly want to be family with us so..." She then wrote to the side a small key. "So, here's what everything else I'm going to do will mean. These lines that cross out the circles mean they're gone. Off in a better place. These question marks mean they could be dead or alive. The stars mean they're alive. Then this little swirl means they're more than likely dead."
"What if they're more than likely alive?"
"A heart. Now watch." As Mariana turned back to her drawings she began to write around them. Crossing out the circle that said F, and the one that said Z. She wrote over a question mark on the one that said C and the M's that were her Mother and little brother. Then she drew swirls next to them. Next to the ones connected to her Father she wrote question marks and hearts. "It's a complicated family, but it's my family. And sadly, this job is to dangerous for a little kid to be joining me on. You have to stay here."
"This is..." Ethan stared wildly at the drawings finally seeing how they came together, "You need my help." Mariana stood up and brushed her foot her in the dirt to erase the drawing. "I know where these guys are. If they're the one's that were coming after you." Mariana's eyes dilated as Ethan stood up holding the drive. "And I can do this all the time." He swung the drive around on his wrist staring at the blinding dark blue circle he formed.
"Okay Trickster, hand it over," Mariana reached for the drive but Ethan kept his ground and pressed on.
"Take me with you."
"Not happening." Mariana's hands clutched the drive and moved it to around her neck.
"Yes, it is."
"And why is that." Mariana began walking away smugly until Ethan ran in front of her and held the drive once more.
"This is why." Mariana gave in laughing, agreeing to take Ethan with her as long as he behaved. And with that. They headed back to the house of the woman and the daughter who were about to give everything to the two they barely knew.
Back at the lodge Rosa and Carla had some unneeded visitors at their door. A girl and Zack. Angered by the fact that he knew the killer to his brother was here, he set out in the house with a mind of rage, and a smoggy, rusty, blood and iron painted pistole. The girl, clean blue painted hair and freshly done ice stabbed eyes. A pale skin that ran down her body and a motion to Zack indicating something more was meant to happen. Carla's figure stepped into the room and stared at the two of them. Without thinking a grim smile ran across Zack's face, and with one swift knock, Carla was on the floor. A puddle almost matching to the dark wood below her surrounded her head and began to cover her blue flower printed dress. Next was Rosa to enter. With a blade frozen in her hand. The sharp end of it was covered in dark wet weeds from the garden sides. This time the woman had a grim sneer laced along her face. In her hand she had taken out a large dagger and stepped towards Rosa. Her expression went thin and straight as she stepped towards the girl and sliced a dagger into her cheek. The two fought on, hard and relentless. The girl to avenge her bother. Rosa to avenge her Mother. All while Zack walked to the back garden in waiting. He stood firmly along the cabbages and stared at the forming figures into the fog. But it wasn't who he had believed it to be. From the fog came running a great large German Shepard that was able to tackle Zack with ease. Quickly but struggling to be thrown. The struggle was not one for the dog. Behind him came the shooting of a gun that had echoed inside the man's head from days before. He had charged forward with a violent scream that could used as a battle cry. But this was no age long battle. This was a battle for trusts. This was a battle for friendship. This was a battle for life. But off all things, this was a battle... for love.
"I'LL KILL YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID TO THEM!" The voice screamed as it went shooting. Then, a bullet, far from its own was shot. And the violent cry of the voice dead out. To soon join Sebastian in what will be, a never-ending battle.
