Chapter Thirty

Luke stood in front of the the small daycare, a devious grin on his face. He relished the opportunity to do his own thing, without anyone else's interference.

Without hesitation, he kicked open the door, causing a loud bang that echoed through the quiet street. Inside, children and helpers were frozen in shock, and stared screaming as the sight of him. In his right pocket, he concealed a knife and a gun pressed under his armpit.

Greyson had assigned Luke the role to threaten the daycare, injure a few if needed, and wait for Jason's arrival. However, his true desire was to do his own thing and not lead chickens into doing dirty work. After all, Jason deserved to suffer after burning most of his arm.

"What's going on?" Ilya exclaimed as children huddled behind her.

"Having some fun," Luke replied nonchalantly, knocking several kids to the ground.

He had chosen to target the daycare because he found children annoying and unnecessary. All they did was cry and whine, and he saw no value in them. Torturing them in this place gave him a sense of satisfaction.

"It's just a fun game," Luke said, smirking.

"Greyson promised to keep the children safe!" Ilya protested.

"Things change," Luke replied, his grin widening.

"Layla, get the children to the back!" Ilya cried, turning to look back at them.

With that desperate plea for help, Luke shoved a group of them onto the floor, the force of the action sending them sprawling. The sound of startled cries and frightened screams filled the room, and he couldn't help but laugh. It was entertaining to him shove and push children down.

"Stop!" Ilya exclaimed.

Luke gripped Ilya by her jaw, his nails digging deep into her skin."I stop when I want," he spat.

Ilya eyes filled with tears, as he felt something hit his back. He glared back at Teagan standing there definitely with wooden blocks clutched tightly in her hands.

"You're that slut's friend," Luke said, dropping Ilya and facing Teagan. Smirking, he grabbed the knife from his pocket. Even without having one arm, Luke still knew how he could stop this pathetic girl.

"Stop bullying the children!" Ilya pleaded.

Luke laughed at her words. Did she really think a simple plea could stop his work? He had already killed some by hitting them.

"Not everyone is nice," Luke sneered. "If that's a term you Simcoe people use."

Teagan stormed over, her face flushed with anger, and her eyebrows narrowed. Without hesitation, she threw another block at him.

"Keep throwing those wooden blocks, and I'll kill you," Luke taunted, holding up the large knife with a sinister grin.

Luke walked toward the girl near the door before she threw the block. He remembered that Greyson never explicitly told him who he could and couldn't kill. Greyson wanted it more as an injury distraction, but Luke assumed Greyson wouldn't mind if he murdered people. It was just some random girl, and he didn't like girls in any sense.

He gripped the handle of the knife tightly in his hand. He took aim and watched it shoot through the air like a dart, as it landed directly in Teagan's chest.

Teagan stared down at her shirt, which was quickly soaking with blood as spread across her chest. Her body seemed to falter as she slowly sank to her knees, helplessly dropping the block.

Luke lips curled into a devious smile as he watched Teagan collapsing awkwardly position onto the floor. Her body twisted slightly as her eyes met his own. He knelt down in front of her, and yanked the knife out of her chest, with blood dripping on it and falling on her cheek.

"Well, you're going to need a new staff member," he sneered, tucking the knife into his back pocket.

The daycare erupted in chaos as cries and faces of horror filled the room. Nobody ran up to help the girl, so he grabbed Teagan by the neck and pushed the door open using his back.

"I'm not leaving," Luke said, throwing her body on the narrow road and landing with a crack. Someone could have their own gift when they walk by.

Turning back towards the scene, his eyes scanned the terrified people. His gaze settled on Ilya with tears streaming down her cheeks as she trembled in fear.

Nearby, Angel approached her cautiously, horror on his face before he held out his palm toward Like with a bottle of milk in hand.

"Are you planning to throw that at me?" Luke snarled.

Suddenly, the ground beneath Luke gave away and he fell, hitting his chin on a building block. Angel glared at him, who seemed to be using an invisible force to hold him down. He realized this must be a new mutant.

"Freak!" Luke spat.

Slowly, Luke managed to stand up, feeling the vibrating pressure on his body. Greyson was able to control his power, but this idiot clearly couldn't.

Luke gripped the bloody knife, his hand shaking as he threw it at Angel. It missed and slid across the floor. Gritting his teeth, he watched as Ilya rush to pick it up.

"Get lost!" Angel exclaimed, looking directly at Luke.

This boy should be cowering in fear, but instead he stood his ground. There was no crying or even screaming, just a hard glare. The vibration stopped as Luke prepared to lunge at Angel, but then heard a scream from outside.

He glanced back and saw that that no one had entered the daycare. This was his chance. In this place, there was no need for annoying toddlers or children. All of them have just been a waste of extra space.

"You were pretty stupid to do that," Luke spat, holding up his pistol.

Even though he wasn't from Simcoe originally, like most Uden students, he knew where people kept their guns.

The security at Uden had multiple stored away, but they weren't easily accessible until Greyson broke the door open. It was also easy to find some guns in people's houses, especially if they were hunters.

"Just leave before Jason gets here," Angel demanded.

"Is that an order or a threat?" Luke sneered.

Angel remained silent but stared with narrowed eyes. Did these people think they could actually scare him? Holding a finger on the trigger of the gun, Luke snarled at him.

"Some freak doesn't scare me," Luke said.

Angel looked at him with pursed lips unable to find his fear. Luke laughed at Angel's lack of bravery, knowing none of these chickens had the guts to stand up against him. He just had to do was wait for Jason to arrive.

Luke heard a loud bang echoing from the doorway, pulling his attention away. He glanced back, and spotted James and Emma standing at the entrance. The sight was already enough to make Luke smirk, especially since James was holding the door in his bare hands like it was nothing.

"Hiding your power from Greyson?" Luke sneered, noticing Emma's pale face and James' fearful expression. "Did you see the present outside, Emma?"

"Present?" Emma asked.

He marched past them, pushing them against the wall, and noticed that the body gone. He looked around, but there was no one it sight except for Emma and James.

Glaring at them, he grinned deviously. Punishment wasn't inherently evil and Emma could always deal with them, but he needed to focus on something else. Having three freaks against him could be a problem. In a split second, he shot James in the leg and fled from the daycare.

Bella's heart raced in her chest as she watched the chaos unfold before her eyes. The once-peaceful town square had descended into madness with shouting and fighting.

Zane peeked from behind Coffee Culture, where they had stopped the golf cart."Yara, watch the cart," he commanded.

The two of them sprinted toward the nearby daycare. As they reached the building, they skidded to a halt, stunned at the sight that there was no door.

"James broke it," Ilya said.

Bella gaze shifted to see Ilya kneeling beside James, who was slumped against the wall, tears streaming down his cheeks. Emma was there too, her hand placed on his leg with her eyes closed. It seemed she was healing a wound that had injured him.

"What happened?" Bella asked.

"Luke," Ilya said acidly.

The room was scattered with the aftermath of whatever had happened. There were injured children, wounded and frightened that were sitting near the smell kitchen. She noticed that majority of them weren't im the main area, which meant they were probably in the back rooms. Her gaze settled on Angel, settled one of the small blue chairs in the corner, his head bowed and hands covering his face.

"He hurt a lot of the toddlers. Teagan tried stopping him, but..." Ilya trailed off. "He stabbed her."

Bella felt her heart pounding in her ears, an overwhelming rush of emotions surging through her as she struggled to comprehend the situation. They had just made amends, and now she had been murdered.

She wanted to cry, but she couldn't bring herself to do so. First, Luke shoots up Burger King and now he kills her best friend.

"We missed the party," Esme said, appearing with Jason, and Jade.

Jason immediately rushed toward Bella, pulling her into a hug. As he felt her, she felt her entire body tremble as memories flooded back of the moments she and Teagan shared before everything fell apart. They had once dreamed university together, imagining a future in the same city, and even planned a trip to Paris just for the chocolate. Their laughter over joke, late-night talks about boys and shared tears had built a bond that now felt empty.

Angel approached softly, "Luke took off if you're looking for him," he said.

"He killed Teagan," Bella spat, tears welling up at the corner of her eyes.

"What happened to James?" Esme exclaimed, looking at the blonde boy and crouching in front of him.

"He broke down a door," Emma said.

"James, breaking down a door? You have super strength!" Esme exclaimed, reaching over and grabbing his hand.

"And then Luke shot him," Emma said.

Everyone who had just entered seemed more concerned about James' health than Teagan's death. Bella wanted to say something about that, but she felt she couldn't. She just couldn't believe Teagan was dead.

"Esme and Jade, we need to move," Jason stated.

Bella noticed Cindy sitting on one of the bike handles outside. Her eyes fixed on whatever appeared to be in front of her.

Jason turned to Bella, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I'll stop him," he said, kissing her quickly and rushing out with Esme and Jade.

Bella glanced over at where Emma still sat, who was still sitting and healing James' injury. She wanted to ask him about why Luke did this, but her mind just felt blank and empty.

"Greyson didn't tell Luke to do that," James said with strain.

"Luke wasn't supposed to attack the daycare?" Emma asked.

"Kill anyone," James mustered out.

Teagan would have still been alive Luke he had followed Greyson's orders. It was the only time Bella agreed with his, as they did not involve murder.

"Luke did it for his own amusement," Zane said, looking down at James.

"What about that fake ambush?" Emma asked, taking her hand away from the wound.

"It was a distraction," James replied, using the wall for support. Emma held his shoulder to steady the young boy.

"Was there a set time or anything?" Zane inquired, but James shook his head.

Bella's whole mind was overwhelmed with thoughts. She wanted both answers and revenge. Revenge for Teagan and those injured, and answers as to why he thought this was okay.

Looking at Angel, he had his hands behind his back. This had been the one who had saved them by killing gravity. Without him being there, Ilya and others may have died. Bella didn't have freaky powers to fight or anything. Just like Ilya and Zane, they became helpless without a weapon.

One person who could kill Luke in a heartbeat would be Divina. That thing is focused on her personal ideals and wouldn't help them with just one guy. Ashley is the greater threat, but Greyson and Luke have become equals. Specifically, Luke, who had actually taken lives.

Running a hand down her face, Bella felt strangely focused on revenge. It's wrong to seek revenge or even wish someone dead. She couldn't imagine one part of herself where she wanted someone dead.

"Keep the children in the back. Luke might come back and attack here," Zane stated. Turning toward Bella, he nodded his head at her. This had just been the start of the showdown.

Bella moved quietly into an empty room that had once been meant for newborns. There had not been many newborns that could survive with just formula. She leaned against the wall and hung her head. Without realizing it, tears had started to flow down her cheeks.

She was crying over a friend who had been stabbed. Even with the constant bickering, she still considered Teagan a friend. She used her palm to wipe her tears and looked down at the small garbage bin beside her. From what she noticed, a lot of boxes of antidepressants rested in them. She picked up one of the boxes and looked at the brand name.

Celexa was the brand name, with all racks completely gone. She grabbed one of the boxes, and she stared at the white box. According to her parents, antidepressants sometimes control depression and anxiety.

Ilya walked into the room, her hands trembling. "Are you okay?" she asked, wearing a smile despite appearing tired.

Bella walked over and hugged the girl, closing her own eyes. Even from the inside, Bella could hear the sounds of screaming and crying, but this wasn't even the worst of it.

Everything had been a distraction for some plot. It has always been a hard pill to swallow to be away from your parents, but this made it worse. Three weeks of nonstop confusion and chaos, but this wasn't the time to be sitting and crying.

Bella pulled back to see Ilya with a forced smile. "We just have to have faith," Ilya said.

She needed faith that Jason wouldn't end up dead. Focus on the fact that the guy you have feelings for could end up getting stabbed or shot. Even with Jade and Esme, Luke had all his thugs following his orders. It could be possible that Luke didn't even demand they go to a certain place. Maybe all of his logic went toward stopping Jason.

"We need to go," Zane called, now standing in the doorway.

Bella wiped her wet cheeks and had to focus on the giant issue in the town plaza. There were fights that involved themselves and not some country.

"Please don't tell me Jason got injured," Bella pleaded.

"We're going to find Divina," Zane said.

Bella's skin grew pale, and her fear heightened inside her body. Finding Divina became a battle in itself. She was a crazy girl who tormented Ashley by yanking her hair out, beating her up, or even throwing her into a water fountain.

Divina's actions didn't justify Luke's, who did it out of his own pleasure. That thing had an enemy that she wanted to plunge death upon; opposite effect, one would say.

Following Zane behind, they walked past the three up front. Leaving the daycare, they looped around the building, seeing Yara with her legs on both of the back seats.

Bella couldn't shake the feeling that Divina might even refuse to help them. She thought about the situation that someone other than Ashley was responsible for the harm that led to death. Inside, she knew that death and revenge weren't just.

Her life wasn't anything like she imagined anymore. From dating someone she'd never talk to, along with actually growing to help and stay by him.

In the past, competitions for popularity or athletic performance defined social status. There was no longer any contest over who was the cutest or most talented. Even people like Stick, who was once considered the golden boy of the school, had been overshadowed by darker events—his involvement in a murder had shattered his reputation and transformed him.

Bella wished she could figure out a way to stop the vanishing situation. Whom did she rely on once Jason left?

Most of her friends or acquaintances were preoccupied with their own jobs, like Ilya. She was continually busy caring for the younger children, leaving Bella's feeling isolated.

She wouldn't want to impose, but who did she stay with? On the one hand, she is not capable of staying on her own. She couldn't imagine herself going into isolation away from people. How could she want to isolate herself from those around her?

Bella rode with Zane on the highway, seeing the road quiet. "I think something bad will happen if Jason and Greyson don't disappear," he said. "Divina is helping us with Ashley. That thing can't stay forever to protect us."

"What do you think will happen?" Bella asked, dreading the question.

Zane peered at her before looking at the road. "I don't know. That's why we have to find this thing and figure out the basic facts," he said.

The door to the safe house swung opened, revealing its location nestled discreetly among the tangled branches hidden that lined the outskirts of town.

Scarlett watched as Maverick entered, quickly slamming the door behind him. His shoes were soaked with water, and he wore a sour expression on his face.

"Well, Luke messed up. Apparently, he quite literally killed someone," Maverick said.

Both of them were aware of Luke's sadistic tendencies, and he wouldn't care if he murdered someone. He was not a leader, but rather a side henchman who was used to do the dirty work.

"I told you he was only interested in following his own personal ideals," Scarlett remarked.

None of this surprised her. In the past, Luke had been none for getting into fights and continued his opponent until they were unconscious.

"What about the others?" Greyson asked.

Maverick sat down on the green sofa, looking up at Greyson. "They're still fighting people around here," he replied.

"The rest of it is going accordingly. Who did Luke end up killing?" Greyson questioned.

"Someone from the daycare. Teagan?" Maverick implied.

"No, I don't know her," Scarlett mocked, looking around the safe house.

The small area contained a sofa, a recliner, and a small kitchen. Newspapers were stacked on the small kitchen table, detailing multiple robberies.

"Jason has Esme and Jade," Maverick stated.

"Go stop him, and don't hold back with fear," Greyson demanded.

Maverick grinned, his eyes lingering on her and Oscar. As they left the house, Greyson began to pace, nervously biting his pinky nail.

"Where's Preston? He should have been here by now," Greyson demanded.

"He'll show up eventually," Scarlett sighed, as the door opened magically and shut. Preston revealed himself, looking at Greyson.

"What's Jason doing?" Greyson asked.

"He's running around the town plaza, trying to stop the fights," Preston replied, munching on some fries from a paper bag. "Nobody was at the Burger King."

"Good," Greyson said, smirking at the disembodied boy.

Preston had been one of the first to help Greyson. He enjoyed spying on girls without being detected, which was how they discovered his power when Trevor went to punch him, but he disappeared from view. Preston had never been much of a bully, but he reminded him of Oscar in a less mellow way.

"Everything is going according to plan, except for Luke's idiotic failure," Greyson spat, forcing a laugh out of Scarlett.

It was rare for Luke to fall in his true ideals, but it had happened in the past when Greyson ordered him to steal food from the staff room and he only brought back a single egg sandwich.

"And you're just sitting here, waiting for your henchmen to finish the dirty work," she snarled. "I told you this would happen. Uden's freaks have started to join Jason's side because of your own behaviour."

Greyson glared at her before facing her directly. "I'm just doing what's right," he stated, placing a hand on his chest with a charming smile. "No freak will take my control from me in this place. So far, everything is going according to plan."

"Where's James, then?" Scarlett asked innocently, his charming smile faltering. "See."

She hoped that James had already told Jason about how to prevent the vanishing. Despite knowing that less than a day remained before Jason and Greyson disappeared entirely, she was determined to stop that from happening. She didn't want to be left dealing with Luke, who would obviously torture her if Greyson left.

"Preston, go back to town and keep watch on things," Greyson ordered as Scarlett watched the door open and close. He grabbed her hand as she stared down at the contact. "Everyone out."

Oscar and Andrew Zimmer slowly got onto their feet and exited the house, leaving Scarlett and Greyson alone. As the door shut behind them, Greyson pulled her into an awkward embrace.

Scarlett looked at him with knitted eyebrows."Is this some kind of dramatic show?" she mumbled.

Greyson's expression grew serious. "I might die," he said.

"You're quite dramatic. You honestly think that—" Scarlett started.

Before she could finish her sentence, he closed the distance between them and pressed his lips to hers in a sudden kiss. For a moment, she returned the gesture before slightly pushing herself away, still within his embrace.

"What was that for?" she asked as she stared at him.

"Well," Greyson started. "It's that..."

This wasn't the first time he'd tried to say something like that, and she knew better than to expect a confession.

"You really aren't good at this," she mocked with a smirk.

"What am I supposed to say? You're hot," Greyson said.

"I'm hot? That's all you could muster out?" Scarlett mocked, but she felt she'd gone too far, seeing the glare form on his face.

Both of them stood in tense silence before Greyson let out a sigh. "I'm doing what I want to achieve," he released her from his grasp.

She placed both hands on her hips, raising her eyebrows at him. "Things changes, Greyson. You can't just expect your plans to work," she implied.

"It will. I don't see anyone stopping me. Do you?" Greyson inquired.

"Well, your plan with Luke backfired," she snarled.

Greyson may be intelligent and charming, but not everything will work. James may have already told Jason how to stop the vanishing, which results in both of them staying, not just Greyson. With his large ego, Scarlett wouldn't be surprised if he did lose.

"I guess we'll have to see," he said, determination resting in his eyes. "It'll work."

Scarlett smirked at him now. His overall goal of taking over The Bubble might work, but Scarlett felt it wouldn't. This wasn't the real world anymore, but a secluded one. If that thing and Ashley were nothing to them, then danger was ahead. It wasn't just the danger of what Greyson might do, but much more.

One new death and we found out Angel at the daycare can crease gravity.

Do you expect Teagan to die?
