Chapter Nineteen

Jason was pretty sure he was seeing stars. He hung by his wrists on the projector of the smart board, watching Luke stare unimpressed. He didn't know where Bella ended up being taken, but he needed to find a way out.

"Maybe he just needs Jesus?" Eden's voice chimed.

He could feel blood inside his throat from his cut lip. Luke examined him, holding the golf club in his right hand. He had to think of a way to get out of this before he was a bloody mess.

"He doesn't need Jesus," Luke snapped.

"Let's pray," Eden said, her eyes shut and hands laced.

Jason could remember Esme saying something about some students being strong Catholics. It wasn't the strange part that she spoke Bible verses randomly, but praying in front of a white wall. In front of her was a drawing of what seemed like a star coloured in golden yellow.

"It won't work on him, Eden," Luke sneered.

This went from going grocery shopping to learning about the art of prayer. Hopefully, Esme had already found Bella, since she'd been the one who had come to help.

"There's nothing wrong with prayer," she said, her voice high.

"Where's the old Eden who'd escaped from campus with those crackheads?" Luke snarled.

Jason could have sworn that innocent smile had turned into a hard glare. Eden's smile returned, but she had a dangerous look in her eyes.

"Are you intending to push a nerve you shouldn't?" Eden taunted, her voice turning dark.

Luke gripped the golf club like a baseball bat, swinging it against his hip. Jason cried out in pain, making Luke laugh. He hit him again as Jason gritted his teeth at his side.

"Shut up, Eden," Luke spat.

Jason watched Luke try to position himself to hit him again, but Jason saw something else. Eden slowly stood, gripping a second golf club that rested against the wall. She swung it like a bat, hitting it directly on the back of Luke's head. He yelped in pain, holding the back of his neck, slowly turning to glare at Eden.

"Don't disrespect the crackheads. I'm reformed, but I can be me from before when I want," Eden spat.

At that moment, Jason tried to angle his palms toward Luke, but light shot out, causing the golf club to fall to the floor. Luke glanced down from where he stood, seeing the golf club. It didn't melt the flooring, but it did leave a mark.

"Trying to burn my body now?" he asked, glancing up and grabbing a metal ruler.

Jason narrowed his eyes at the psychotic boy in front of him. Luke wouldn't care shot at him, even if he had this burning power. All he seemed to care about was the torture that he got to inflict on others.

He tried to angle his hands toward Luke, but it went a different route. Instead of just hitting the ruler out of his hand, it was directed right at his forearm. That burning light from his palms slid down Luke's arm, burning his skin. He screamed as Jason jumped down, his hands tied, and began to run. He stopped, trying to saw his way out of the rope using a metal door handle.

Before he could run down the hall, he felt something hard hit the back of his thigh. He fell flat, crying out in pain. He looked behind him to see Eden wearing her innocent smile, which didn't match her eyes.

"This wasn't to help you at all," she said, swinging the golf club casually in her hand. "Better watch out for the crackheads."

"Found you!" Esme exclaimed, grabbing his wrists before saying anything and speeding off down the hall.

"I think I burned half of Luke's arm off, and Eden hit him with a club," Jason murmured.

There were multiple thoughts running through his head. Hopefully, he ended up killing Luke with that blast he made on his arm. The last time he used his power, it burned Maverick's fingers off, so there could be a likely chance that he at least loses his arm.

Esme ran around the school until she came to a halt in front of Zane. He stood outside the fire truck, his eyes growing wide.

"I think I bought us time," Jason said when the two lifted him into the back of the fire truck.

"He burned half of Luke's arm off. This will give us a huge advantage!" Esme remarked, sitting behind him in the back. "You said Eden hit him?"

"Well, that innocent Catholic wasn't looking so innocent," he said, groaning in pain.

Jason tried to think of what could have created such anger, but he remembered Luke mentioning something about crackheads. Weren't those the type of people you found on the street? That didn't make any sense if she was involved with them.

In the back, Bella slept on her side, flat on two of the seats. Jason carefully moved her and placed her head on his lap.

"She fell victim to Eden mostly," Esme remarked.

Jason gritted his teeth, feeling pain seep into his side when he moved, while she slammed the door. Why did he somehow get injured every time he went here?

Zane started the fire truck and drove back to town with the dark sky surrounding them. Greyson wanted war just before their birthday. Did that just determine power or personal resentment? Jason didn't really care but wanted to help the town, not make it worse.

"Wait, aren't we forgetting Devon and Cindy?" Yara asked, looking at Zane.

"Leave him; he's a prick. Guy thinks Greyson would promote him," Esme murmured, grabbing her thick socks and tying them around her feet to ease the pain.

"Cindy probably teleported to the infirmary," Zane remarked.

"Who?" Bella stirred, her voice hoarse. Still seeming to be in a daze, she reached her hand up and pinched his nose.

"Ow!" Jason hissed at the pain in his body.

"I just wanted groceries," Bella slurred out, slowly gaining awareness of her surroundings.

Zane then stopped randomly, making Esme yell at him. "Bodies," he said, leaning out the open window.

Jason wanted to lean over but couldn't due to the pain in his side. He watched Yara hop out to help while Esme dangled out of the window.

"Are we at Simcoe?" Bella asked, trying to tilt her head over. It didn't work, leaving her to put both hands on his cheeks now.

"Dead bodies," Esme stated.

It is quite common to see dead bodies at least once a day. There was a difference between Ashley's actions that caused people to die and kids pulling reckless stunts.

Jason heard the sound of the back door of the truck opening, as there had been thumping in and out of the truck.

"There had been three," Esme mumbled, trying to lean her whole body out the window.

Zane loaded back in with Yara, who didn't seem fazed by the situation. Had young people become accustomed to this normal behaviour?

In the real world, you'd get arrested if you confessed to the murder. That would result in jail time for a certain number of years while wearing orange jumpsuits. It didn't seem like anything was about those rules or about who you could and couldn't kill. The punishment for murder just came from Luke and his thugs.

Starting it back up, Zane checked the gas light on the truck. "We still have enough. If we keep having these Uden Academy trips, it'll be out in a week," he stated.

Bella stared up at him with a worried gaze. He wasn't exactly sure if the fire department could run around in a golf cart. That doesn't exactly work if a fire happens, like when that child used the supernatural powers.

"Shouldn't," he mumbled.

Some of the danger was prevented by Luke losing most of his arm. Actually, Greyson could come after him even when he doesn't have full control. Would he expect hand-to-hand combat? Jason could volley a volleyball but not fight.

When Simcoe came to view, they stopped at Coffee Culture. Some have expressed an interest in learning how to make coffee or even sweets.

Jason lifted Bella, who was still in a daze. Pain struck his side, pressing a hand against it. Leaning on his side, Esme dragged Bella out, who stumbled a bit before gripping his shoulders. Zane opened the clear door as a small bell went off. Nevaeh was behind the white counter with a small smirk on her lips.

"It's been a while," she said, setting them down with hot chocolate, and leaning forward onto the counter.

"I didn't know you helped here," Bella coughed out.

"It helps me find out more gossip," Nevaeh implied.

Inside, it smelled like a mix between coffee grounds and chocolate. Jason sat on one of the red stools next to the counter. The counter went around like a border, with each having small stools against it. There were small black tables around with empty cups or dishes on them.

"Well, Jason burned off Luke's arm, which is great!" Esme cheered, grabbing a sugar package and pouring it on her tongue.

"You burned off Luke's arm?" Nevaeh asked, unaware of the extent of Luke's own power.

"Kinda," he said, shrugging as he held his side.

Bella sat beside him, except that she had her head down on the counter. Her blonde hair was a mess, while she just winced in pain.

"It's a yes or no," Nevaeh pestered with a smirk.

"Okay, yes. It didn't exactly fall off," Jason implied.

Esme turned to him with knitted eyebrows, attempting to get Zane to have one of the many sugar packages she had.

"Do you think they will cut it off?" Bella mumbled, turning her head to face him now.

Jason didn't know if they would actually do anything. Would they actually cut off his whole arm? Maybe Greyson might even kill him if he couldn't do anything.

"Plus, you got abducted, which became a gossip wave when Zane went after you. Xander and some others tried to step up and help. Although it wasn't exactly doing much," Nevaeh said.

"Any new strange events?" Zane questioned Nevaeh.

"I think that Ashley made more holes," Nevaeh informed, snapping her fingers.

Zane had wide eyes, but Jason himself felt the exact same way: confused and panicked. The creation of large holes means more people could possibly die.

"Rumour has it that it's behind Rick's Gas Station," Nevaeh stated.

Rick's was located on the south side. It was basically in the middle of nowhere, right before you had just entered or left town.

"We could fill up the gas if we figure out how to work it," Jason suggested, looking directly at Zane.

"We'd need cash or debit cards," Zane said.

Gas wouldn't just automatically work without payment. It's something he's seen when his mom fills up gas for their red car.

"Here's some," Nevaeh said, placing one hundred dollars of cash on the counter. "Some kids wanted to know gossip, so I said they had to pay."

"Will it even work? I don't even know how to pump gas." Jason asked, holding the cash in his hand.

"All you do is grab the gas pump and put it in the circle thing on the car," Nevaeh said.

"I know how to pump gas," Zane implied, while Jason glanced back at him with a nod. If they had one person who knew, that could be helpful.

If energetic Esme ended up doing it, she'd probably place the gas pump in the exhaust pipe. Jason knew that it didn't go in there, so having the fire truck blow up wasn't his intention. It became another nightmare having to live before he vanished.

Jason didn't want to disappear, especially because he would be leaving Bella. Most of her friends vanished, but she did gain Teagan back as a friend. Still, he didn't want to vanish, given how everything had been running. And if he left, that would mean Greyson would vanish. Who could even control the chaos if they both left?

Ashley smiled inwardly at another hole she created, killing four children. If it continues at this rate, more will join her side. No longer that loser people throw rocks at during recess. Even her looks may improve, much like those bitches, Scarlett or Bella. It enraged her that they looked beautiful. Why couldn't she be born pretty?

"Because you're ugly."

Ashley jumped and looked around from Rick's gas station. That voice was faint, like a small echo. The goddess wasn't here already, right? Grabbing one of the bodies, she dragged him by his arm across the thick grass.

"Did you hear the goddess?" Vickie asked, one of her many slaves. "Maybe it's an animal or plant?"

"You can't read, right? Probably can't tell the difference between right and left."

Ashley wanted to kill that voice inside her head. The goddess could only speak through her mind because she's the ruler. The controller of everything in this stupid human body.

Ashley wasn't a good name for her, especially since it's a human name. Well, the goddess didn't exactly have a name, but it was an arrogant thing that made her want to throw a car.

"I know you're toying with me!" she yelled.

"Nobody is there?" David inquired with his eyebrows knitted and carrying a dead body.

"Goddess," she hissed with gritted teeth, glaring around.

"Tick-tock. Oh wait, you probably don't understand that."

That was the final nail as she dropped the arm of the body, glancing around. There was one heap of leaves that formed in front of her. It was similar to a body but faceless, wearing a sly grin.

"You're a leaf?" Ashley spat.

Suddenly, Vickie and David disappeared. She knew what goddess could be capable of even when it didn't have a body.

"How?" Ashley demanded.

The goddess floated close, holding out that arm of leaves. She went flying into an oak tree, screaming in pain. She hit the tree hard, groaning when she slowly lifted herself.

"Shouldn't you have the answers?" Goddess taunted.

David went charging while the goddess made him disappear by popping behind him and hitting him in the back of the neck.

"Oops!" goddess mocked.

"If you're a pile of leaves, I'll know how to destroy you," Ashley said, wearing a devious grin.

"Going to get a leaf blower? What if I'm just a stop sign or a fish?" Goddess laughed.

Ashley gritted her teeth. "You aren't alive," she spat.

There was a prideful smile on their lips. It appeared strange to see a gap between the orange and yellow leaves without any teeth or mouth features.

"How am I talking?" Goddess taunted. "Did you ever consider that someone broke into your domain, god? Or that someone developed them? Wait, you're too stupid to think that."

"You broke in, didn't you?" Ashley gritted her teeth, but there was no response. "It's my domain, not yours!"

"My rules, which means you're going to get killed. When I make my appearance, you'll realize I appear like someone you know," the goddess said.

It changed into someone else, making her take a step back from them. How could it change into someone? No, that wasn't the main concern right now. If anything, she needed to find a different route for getting rid of it.

"Boo hoo!" the goddess laughed at their own joke.

It held a hand out, causing Ashley to fall onto her back. They sped toward her, jumping onto her stomach. Ashley felt her ribs crack as she screeched out in agony.

"I know how to stop you," the goddess hissed, guiding a thumb across her throat.

"You'd never act this way," Ashley said.

"Really? You'd think I'm someone who'd be nice toward people I despise." Goddess taunted.

Ashley slowly stood up, pushing the goddess off of her.

The goddess glanced around before spotting someone. There was a grin that appeared on its lips before it changed back into its leaf body.

"No!" Ashley exclaimed as she sent Vickie and David after her.

Cindy stood in horror at what she'd stumbled upon. Vickie and David got sliced by the movement of the goddess.

"You need to protect yourselves," the goddess started, glancing back with a sly smile. "Tell Greyson he's getting closer, and don't let them vanish."

The goddess vanished while the leaves fell to the ground. Cindy froze for a moment before teleporting away from them.

Ashley kicked the leaves around with gritted teeth, her body trembling. Setting her fingertips in her mouth, she knew that girl had the information. Cindy telling Greyson this information shouldn't be happening at all. None of this could happen, and she needed to have Jason and Greyson vanish.

"Call me Divina instead. Goddess is tiresome."

Kicking around, Ashley felt the pain strike back in her ribs. Dropping to her knees, she groaned in pain. Collin lay a distance away, flat on the grass. Looking around, there was grass and some old roads that not many used.

Divina had been a real pain in the ass. Different matters had to be addressed if Greyson and Jason didn't end up disappearing in four days.

"My body is actually much closer than you think."

Ashley sucked in a breath with a sour expression. They would vanish with the actions Ashley had in mind. If somehow they didn't, different actions would have to be taken. Divina may not have a body to use its powers, but it was still goddess. One who fights against them, which means killing, has become the best course of action.

"Call me Ragnar, Divina." Ashley said. "It's time for me to take what's mine."

She couldn't be labelled as some stupid girl nor god. Ashley smirked, picking up the dead body. Glaring back, Vickie and David looked around absentmindedly. She wouldn't get anywhere with these two losers. Why are humans stupid?

"Because they follow you."

Greyson stood with Preston, who was waving his arms around frantically. "Where's Luke?" he barked.

Preston tried to ramble breathlessly before Greyson stared at Eden, dragging Luke by the back of his t-shirt. He saw what seemed to be an arm hanging from Luke. There were dark burns incinerating on his left arm while he appeared unconscious.

"I didn't do this," she said, dropping him on the ground.

Greyson raised a hand, while Luke's arm was raised into the air by an invisible force. It made Greyson speed toward an empty classroom where Finn, Henry, and Maverick were.

Luke slowly opened his eyes, looking around the room before letting out a bloody scream and withering around in agony. Jason had done this, which meant his powers seemed to be growing.

Preston came in, holding up the saw. After handing it to Greyson, he gave it to Henry. "Cut it off," he ordered as he took the saw and stared at the arm, which was almost completely off.

"That's just nasty," Maverick remarked.

"Since you guys are being babies," Scarlett spat, grabbing the saw.

"No! Don't saw it off!" Luke yelled, trying to move.

Greyson held him down on the desk with his power. "I need you, Luke," he said.

Scarlett angled the saw to one side. Going back and forth, she gritted her teeth in disgust. His burned arm fell to the ground with a thump. She still held the bloody saw in her hand before giving it to Henry again. Using a thread and needle, she sewed it up.

"Kill me," Luke whimpered.

Scarlett hovered her head over his own, a frown on her face. "Luke, you've pissed yourself and no longer have an arm. Suck it up," she spat.

"We need Emma, so bring her back to Uden," Greyson ordered, looking directly at Henry and Finn, who left for Simcoe.

Luke cried from the pain as Scarlett stared wryly at Greyson. She wished he had killed Luke instead of just his arm. At least if he had died, Scarlett wouldn't have to worry about Luke ditching her if Greyson left.

"You have to clean the wound," Eden said. "Give me that cloth, and get me water and soap."

"No way in hell are you touching me!" Luke yelled, trying to wiggle out of his own invisible force.

Preston quickly left the room to get a bucket of water and some dish soap. Stick came into the room, wobbly with towels to wipe up the blood. It made him breathe heavily as Greyson crossed his arm.

"Do you need a puffer?" Scarlett snickered.

Stick shook his head, tying the bloody towel around Luke's forearm, which was all that was left. If Stick kept acting cowardly after Luke's torture, he'd have to do something about it.

Preston came back into the room, placing the water by Eden. She stared at it before looking at some rubbing alcohol near the wall. She walked over and grabbed it instead, pouring some on the towel and scrubbing the wound.

"I'm going to kill you!" Luke shouted at Eden.

"Good luck with that," Eden snarled, jabbing a needle of a clear liquid into the side of Luke's neck. "Thank Simcoe for having Midazolam."

Greyson watched Eden's innocent smile appear before turning on her heel to leave the room. Knowing Emma wouldn't be here for a bit made Greyson chew his pinky nail. It wasn't that he knew the basics of how to help someone with a sawed arm. With the shirt Luke had on, it seemed like he didn't have an arm anymore.

"I'm going to kill Jason for this," Luke grated, gritting his teeth.

"Focus on prep for now, since hostage situations are getting bland," Greyson said dryly.

Luke slowly sat up on the desk, staring at the arm Scarlett had sawed off, from which blood still dripped onto the floor. Greyson had a different idea than capturing Jason and the others.

When Luke got off the desk, he stumbled forward before falling unconscious. Preston crouched down slowly, putting a finger to Luke's neck.

"He's still breathing, so I don't know what's wrong."

Cindy then appeared in front of them. Sitting on the floor, breathing hard, she glanced up at them. "I saw something," she began. "Wait, why is he unconscious? Did you guys give him something?"

"Some liquid," Preston said.

They walked to his office, Cindy seeming to search for an answer for what the drug was for. Greyson sat in the large office chair, leaning forward on the polished desk.

"I've been practicing going from place to place. Anyway, Ashley had been there, along with some leaf body," she said.

"This isn't arts and crafts," Scarlett snickered from the black couch.

"It had an odd mouth, but it had three statements," Cindy started. "Protect ourselves; Greyson's getting closer, and don't let them vanish."

Cindy's words may just be an act of creation, but nobody could make leaf bodies. He wondered how he was getting closer, but it was probably because of the war with Jason.

"Who vanishes?" Greyson asked.

"Ashley had been pretty angry," Cindy remarked, shrugging her shoulders.

"Probably you and Jason," Scarlett implied, looking through a fashion magazine from under the couch.

When this goddess reveals themselves, Greyson should know who they are. If they're close, that could mean someone broke into this bubble.

"Someone broke in," Greyson said.

"I don't see any holes, so just wait until after that vanishing happens," Scarlett said.

"No, we have to figure something out," he said directly to Cindy. "Can you go back to where you saw them? Bring me any information."

Cindy nodded and teleported away. If the goddess knew about him, that did mean they posed a threat. Preston came into the office with Emma, who wore a weak smile.

"Heal Luke," Greyson ordered, pointing at Luke's unconscious body that someone had dragged in.

Emma set her hand on his forearm and closed her eyes. It began to close around the extra stub until it was perfectly healed. Luke slowly opened his eyes slowly and looked toward Greyson with a grin. She took her hand away, almost tripping over her feet.

"I can't grow your arm back, but I closed it the best I could," she said, placing a hand on the wall.

"Emma, stay at Uden from now on," Greyson said.

"What do I tell Melany?" she asked, looking up through her bangs.

"I'll talk to her," Greyson implied.

Preston had turned transparent again; Scarlett stared with a smirk; and Luke stared at his forearm. This all seemed to be playing out nicely.

"I have to gather stuff from town," Emma said, looking directly at him.

"Scarlett can grab them," Greyson remarked with a smile.

Emma just pressed her lips together, nodding her head at them and leaving in slight scuffles.

"I'm not grabbing them," Scarlett spat, sitting up on the couch.

"I'm talking to Melany, so we'll do it then," Greyson said. "Preston, go spy and figure out what Jason's doing." He nodded but left the room.

Greyson chewed on his pinky nail for a moment before an idea crossed his mind. Winning this war as ruler of this place would give him power.

"I get to kill Jason," Luke hissed, picking at the nub of his arm with gritted teeth.

"Gonna give him a handshake with that left arm of yours?" Luke glared hard at Scarlett.

"We're going to find a way to get the powerful freaks on our side," Greyson said. "Luke will stage an attack one day before my fight with Jason."

He knew this could get the attention of Ashley and the goddess, since he wanted to know the true nature of everything.

Eden has done what most of us have been wanting to do. Plus, we got Jason burning Luke's arm off so it seems a win, for now.
