Chapter Fourteen
Greyson sat back in his office chair at the mayor's office. He didn't get why that annoying thing had been creating the gigantic holes in the middle of the street. He wasn't some worker who could repair them with ease when they needed to drive on the road. Then again, that wasn't the only problem he had to deal with.
"Stick escaped?" Greyson spat.
"The change room was empty when Oscar checked." Luke said, crossing his arms.
"Have you found that thing yet?" Greyson demanded.
"I had thugs check the highways and everything. Can I kill her when I find her?" Luke said.
"We're going searching."
Greyson stood from the office chair, walking ahead, while Luke went at his side with a devious grin. Scarlett followed them from behind, raising her brows.
"What if she turns out to be a dog?" she snickered as they descended the stairs.
"We'll kill the dog," Greyson said.
They climbed inside the black SUV. Greyson started it, going through the street onto the highway. Luke looked to the left, while Scarlett looked to the right. All around the empty highway, there were either fields or bushes.
"What's that?" Greyson called, automatically stopping.
Scarlett and Luke slammed their heads hard against their seats. Climbing out onto the highway, they spotted a puddle of the purple substance. It was located in a different area that appeared to be closer to town.
"Isn't that the purple shit that bled from her body?" Luke asked.
Greyson crouched down with narrowed eyebrows. The purple substance was identical to the substance that leaked out of Ashley's system when Luke tortured her.
"Step in it, Luke," Scarlett remarked.
"Why don't you do it? Change that ugly hair of yours," Luke snarled.
"Maybe it's something forming," Greyson said, looking toward the two of them.
It was difficult to know the exact name or even the creation of this substance since it didn't exactly pop into his head. Using his right hand, he used the invisible force to lift some of the substance into the air. It slowly dripped down as a painting on the ground.
"It's God." They looked over and saw Vickie.
"Wasn't she the one Stick killed?" Scarlett questioned.
Greyson nodded, holding both hands toward Vickie as he lifted her high in the air. The girl stared at him with blank eyes that appeared completely purple.
"Who's god?" Greyson demanded.
Vickie then popped all over the road like a balloon without giving an answer. The purple substance was all over the road near their feet and would have been the exact size of Vickie.
"This isn't Jesus Christ Superstar," Scarlett mocked, her hands on her hips.
"God is Ashley," Vickie said, appearing once again opposite them. "Ashley is scared of the goddess."
If someone powerful arrived inside this bubble, that would pose a real problem. Perhaps it wasn't even a person at all, but some other substance that seeped into the ditches.
Luke kicked Vickie in the face as she popped once again into that purple substance.
"We need to discover who the goddess is," Greyson said.
"I doubt it's someone from Uden," Scarlett said, opening the black SUV door.
"Search all those in Simcoe. Get James involved," Greyson ordered.
"We're still finding that insect?" Luke asked, deviously grinning.
"We need to."
Driving fast, they went along the highway, searching back and forth. At one point, Greyson cut across the highway and drove them through a field of crops. It damaged half of them, but it was dried corn, which wouldn't be much of an issue.
"We should have gone to the beach," Scarlett sighed.
They were stuck in the middle of a cornfield with mud stuck in the tires. He opened the driver's door and set his hand out, with an invisible force moving the car out of the field. It skidded across a side road, walking toward the SUV.
"Your dog is ready to do some tricks," Scarlett snarked.
Greyson then noticed Luke hanging half his body out of the window of the CRV. He was attempting to open the door, but since the vehicle was still locked, it didn't work.
"Well, he shouldn't have tried to jump out," he snapped.
"I've done worse," Luke snarled, lowering himself onto the leather seats.
Greyson hit the accelerator and drove briskly toward Wasaga Beach. He drove through the thick sand on the beach before stopping. Some children were near the water while he travelled toward the blue, brick female change room. He lifted it off the ground with an invisible force, where scattered clothes, towels, and an umbrella were on the cement flooring.
"It wouldn't be disappointing if she drowned in the lake," Luke sneered.
Greyson lifted the men's change room this time. It had more clothes and a razor on the ground, along with some backpacks or beach bags filled with basic supplies. Some had lunches filled with food and drinks; some were only half full.
He and Luke went to opposite sides of the beach. The water was clear and calm, with some boats deserted and floating. Focusing on a large boat, he put out his hand, slowly bringing it toward them. Partway through, he had to stop because of its weight. The yellow and white deck boat reached the edge of the sand while he just looked up at the large boat.
"Planning on taking a dream vacation?" Scarlett mocked, holding a lunch bag in her hand.
"Using a boat could give us better sightings, plus we're getting low on gas," Greyson said, pulling the boat close with both hands extended.
"And whose fault is that?" she slyly asked.
He lifted himself onto the boat, which swayed slightly, making him almost lose balance. He lifted her with an invisible hand while she carried the red lunch bag. Dropping onto one of the side seats, she continued to eat her potato chips.
"Uden doesn't teach boating lessons," Scarlett said, crossing her legs.
The key still rested in gear as he tried to start it. It surprisingly worked, despite the many boats that seemed to have died from it being left on.
"It's just like driving a car," he said.
The motor roared as Greyson pushed the throttle forward and steered it in the direction of Luke, who was throwing towels off the ground. When he looked up, he deviously grinned at Greyson. He used the same tactic that he used on Scarlett, except Luke had been tossed into the boat.
Greyson drove them toward the bubble, spotting small houses along the way near the beaches. The lake seemed to stretch on for miles, which seemed strange considering you could usually see a small island that was nearby.
"What's that?" Scarlett asked, pointing toward something floating in the water.
"How can you even see that?" Luke remarked, jumping onto the bow and leaning forward.
"If you die, it's your fault!" Greyson yelled.
Luke shaded a hand over his eyes to examine what floated out on Lake Simcoe. It was something that was bright orange, but the rest appeared dark brown.
"I think it's a person," Luke yelled over the loud speed. "It looks like a boot."
They travelled closer, but none of them knew what floated in the lake. Greyson shrugged his shoulders, and, in the process of looking over at the trees, something loud hit the boat. It made thumping noises repeatedly as Luke stood over to glance down at the water.
Greyson jumped off the bow, walked toward one of the saloons, and opened it. He glanced over, letting the boat float in the water. Walking to where Scarlett stood, he jumped on the bow and looked down. Visible, someone's body floated with a life jacket still supporting them. He raised the young boy with his head askew and his skin blue.
"Hypothermia?" Scarlett asked.
Luke carried up a long rope on deck, swinging it around in his hands with a devious smirk, and tying the boy up once he was on the dock.
"Yup," Greyson said. "Is there anything else out there?" He climbed back on the white bow, looking around the clear water.
"Some water and boats," Scarlett said. "No other bodies have been spotted at the moment." She jumped down and sat in the driver's seat.
Greyson stared down at the pale boy, who had wet clothes from head to toe. He guessed some kid fell overboard or went out swimming for help, but that wouldn't last in this water.
Since there seemed to be no substance or Ashley in this location, they had to keep looking. He went back over to the white cushioned driver's seat, where Scarlett sat with her eyebrows raised at him.
"I'm driving," Greyson said.
"Wouldn't it be best to bring the body back first?" Scarlett suggested standing from the seat.
"No, we'll continue searching. We'll just report that we found him by doing a body search," Greyson stated.
Finding Ashley, or anything leading to that goddess, became paramount. Starting the boat up once again, they went straight toward the end of the bubble. Even if Jason did examine this spot, there had to be more than a bubble.
Nevaeh Bolton enjoyed listening to drama, even if she had just begun to develop the power to hear people's darkest secrets. It started with simple things, like someone feeling guilty because they didn't apologize to their mother before the disappearance of adults. Now, she'd hear about past dramas or people who hated each other.
She entered the infirmary with a smirk curling her lips because she heard about a large hole that had been created. Many children sat injured around as she tilted her head from side to side. They didn't have much gossip, except for Cindy's ability to teleport from place to place.
"Hey, Nevaeh," Emma greeted as she finished healing a boy.
This is someone she has been wanting to crack. She was a Uden Academy student that people in Simcoe still didn't know much about because she kept a lot to herself. This meant that knowing gossip from Uden students wasn't exactly easy since she didn't know most of them.
Simcoe High had its fair share of drama, whether between Bella and Teagan or even the football boys. There was nothing about knowing why people got sent away with bad behaviour to a school that had one of the best education systems in Canada.
"Hey," Nevaeh said, taking a seat on a wooden chair in the corner.
"Emergency session," Emma murmured, wiping sweat from her forehead. Bags were visible under her eyes as she pressed her hand against a boy's bloody leg.
"Can I ask you something?" Nevaeh started as she leaned forward toward Emma. "Greyson and Scarlett slept sexually with each other, right?
"She doesn't know I dated and broke it off with Greyson."
There was a smile that appeared on Nevaeh's face as she pushed her dark hair back. It was easy to get some people to crack, but searching for gossip is the problem.
"Yeah," Emma mustered out, gasping.
One thing she knew about Uden Academy was that Scarlett enjoys exposing secrets through mockery or scandalous actions. Apparently, many guys find her hot, and a lot of girls are jealous of her.
"I just heard a rumour and wasn't sure." Nevaeh breezed, stood, and bounced her way out of the infirmary.
Skipping her way around, she heard some basic drama about missing parents when they're acting tough on the outside. People think about missing social media or playing video games for hours, but that couldn't happen anymore.
When she walked close to the daycare, she spotted Teagan outside the daycare. They were never close in school, because she hung out with a few girls that were a year older than her, along with her sister, Maia.
"Hey, Teagan," Nevaeh said.
There were very few people who realized she could hear dark secrets, since she hadn't really told anyone other than Greyson's group. The struggle became that she only had a few more she could listen to until she had to wait an hour.
"Nevaeh," Teagan said as she guided the child back inside the daycare.
"I've heard you and Bella made up," Nevaeh said as she placed her hands on her hips. "You two were quite the drama queens. I'm sure seeing Scarlett changed your outlook."
"Scarlett's beauty is outstanding, and I could never compare."
She beamed a fake smile and cupped her hands behind her back. Maybe she was baiting people for their secrets for fun, but it was intriguing knowing this information.
"Snooping for drama, per usual?" Teagan said it in a dull tone.
"See, I enjoy hearing gossip, between knowing about a secret affair and Stick being tortured," Nevaeh stated.
"Since the sixth grade."
Since she had two older sisters, they'd always be telling stories about what happened since they were two and four years older than her. This was especially common with her oldest sister, Ophelia, whom her father always said was an exact reflection of her
"Your drama with Bella, though," she said, making an OK gesture with her hand. "See, I'm just the gossip girl that spills secrets and drama if they want to know. Unlike Scarlett, I don't use secrets against others."
It made a slight chill run down her spine. She did enjoy it for feeding secrets, but using it against them wasn't exactly what she'd do. Even if she spilled them to Greyson because they were important, using them against people wasn't exactly right.
"Why don't you just stop?" Teagan suggested.
"I can hear dark secrets," she explained, shrugging her shoulders. Glancing over, she spotted the door of the daycare opening to Ilya. Smiling at the two, she stared directly at Teagan.
"Can you come back? It's Bailey's break," Ilya called, but she nodded without saying a word.
Nevaeh walked through the streets, humming once more. There weren't many Uden Academy people around, which was disappointing. Walking toward the street where the hole incident occurred, she spotted Zane stacking cement blocks.
Bella spotted her first, looking up from sitting on the grass with a slight look of contempt. The two were never exactly friends either; Nevaeh could still see some of the bruises from when her arms got tied up a couple of days ago.
"What happened?" Nevaeh questioned, looking directly at Zane.
"Ashley caused a hole," Zane breathed while another kid helped. The difference is that he stacked the blocks with ease.
"Won't your arm fall off?" Nevaeh asked, staring at Devon.
"Nope, I'm able to lift heavy objects with my left arm," Devon gloated.
That's new information to report to Greyson. Another new ability developed, meaning more drama was created. Looking around, she realized that Jason wasn't with them. It was strange, since he seemed to always be with this group.
"Where's Jason?" Nevaeh pestered, looking at Bella.
"What's our relationship now that we kissed?"
Nevaeh felt a migraine beginning to occur as she hissed in pain. Tears formed at the edges of her eyes, slowly travelling toward someone's lawn. She collapsed on the ground and closed her eyes, feeling the pounding all over. It made her feel dizzy, lying face-down in the grass.
"You okay?" Bella called.
There was no energy to even speak because it felt like knives were being stabbed in her head. She knew ibuprofen wouldn't work because she tried it already, and it just seemed to make it worse by making her tired.
Hearing the rustling of grass, she tried to tilt her head but cried out in pain. "What's wrong?" Yara bent beside her.
The downside of having this ability was that it made her have to recharge like a battery. Emma's healing couldn't happen due to a mental aspect rather than a physical one.
"Power," she mumbled, cracking an eye open. She felt herself being lifted over a shoulder and hanging. Seeing the road made her dizzy and want to pass out. Shutting her eyes, she tried to keep herself still.
"Medicine," she choked out, feeling tears slide down her cheeks. Looking over, a strong-armed dude carried her. Being carried this way felt like an article of clothing on a clothesline.
Keeping her eyes shut, she heard the thumping of the stairs in the church. Voices were heard from different people, making her spot people's feet.
Being seated on two connected chairs, she spotted Melany in front of her. "Sometimes I hate this ability," Nevaeh muttered, closing her eyes with the immense pain rushing through her head.
Sitting inside Uden Academy beside Jade and Trevor wasn't exactly something Mark found himself comfortable with. He was inside a classroom, sorting the list of foods that they could and couldn't have.
A lot of canned goods were not supposed to be shared and eaten because they didn't know how long they'd be in here. That thought made goosebumps form on his arms, but guilt still twisted his stomach because he chose to help Greyson over Jason.
"Keep writing, or you'll get tortured." Jade's voice jolted him out of his thoughts.
This system was going to be set up at the grocery store tomorrow because meats and fruits were getting close to expiration dates. That would only leave meat that people had frozen or boxed and canned foods that people hadn't even touched.
"Why did I let Scarlett convince me?" he muttered to himself.
The girl had provided him with the opportunity to find out about the disappearing adults. At first, he wanted to decline her offer, but she had a way of convincing him. It wasn't just her seductive actions, such as running a finger down his chest, but her overall nature was alluring.
"Because she's a bitch," Jade said. "Guys have always been after her. Teachers have even tried passes on her."
Mark may have done something that may have broken his friendship with Jason, but he could have helped. Having to make his own decisions didn't sit right. Even sitting in a maroon classroom with black desks felt abnormal.
Looking up at the chalkboard, words were written such as "Asshole" or "School's Out Bitches!" all over. Uden Academy didn't seem to care that adults had disappeared; he barely even saw anyone cry about it from this place.
It almost made Mark jump out of his seat, seeing Preston in front of him. Without a sound, he can be invisible whenever he pleases. Apparently, though, he's considered a pervert here.
"Are some of the lists done?" he questioned, staring at Jade.
"Where is Greyson anyway?" Finn asked Preston, looking up from his documents.
"Checking Lake Simcoe for bodies," Preston murmured. He looked back down at the lists from under his messy hair. "I hate sushi."
At Uden, he noticed that they used the cafeteria, or teachers' break room, to cook food. The cafeteria had more appliances, such as an oven, a fryer, two fridges, and a microwave. Unlike in his school, though, they didn't have any vending machines.
"Why aren't there vending machines in your school?" Mark questioned.
"Fights," Jade replied nonchalantly, tapping her pencil on her temple. "Lot in the past. Someone actually attempted to push it on a student."
Compared to his own school, they seemed sane. Thinking behaviours were horrid at his school became an understatement here. There always seemed to be stories of violence or odd ones about drugs.
Preston slipped the list into his pocket as a girl came falling into the classroom. Tumbles, implying her ability may be falling, but some would call it more toppling. She had countless injuries surrounding her body, but she still tried to appear strong.
"Andrew Carters makes bubbles of water," Tumbles said, wobbly placing a hand on the classroom wall. She had blood covering her nose and a cut on her lips.
"I'll inform Greyson later," Preston mumbled.
Mark wondered why they didn't exactly help the fallen girl. Shouldn't they bring her to see Melany or Cindy? Had this been the torture he'd heard about? Someone did say Luke could end up killing someone, unless he already has. It made him continue to write down the assortment of foods.
Mark looked over to see a boy standing in the doorway, whipping a purple marker at Trevor's head before bursting into laughter. Trevor looked up with a hard glare on his face, grabbing the marker that fell on his lap.
"Will Conley," Trevor growled. "Shouldn't you be hacking medical documents?"
"Soon."
Will walked over to one of the classroom desks and played with a purple marker in his hand before drawing smiley faces on the blank papers. It wasn't like Greyson was going to yell at them for drawing pictures, unless he'd just punish Will.
"I'm bored," Will complained. "There's no running from the cops or being able to go to Toronto. I could go see Mia or Bryce, but I'll probably get yelled at."
"He may look like an idiot, but Uden Academy doesn't just have a ranking system for powers. He's part of a group that is considered the top delinquents at Uden Academy," Jade whispered.
Mark glanced back at the boy who played with the markers in his hands. He didn't seem like someone who used violence or had an attitude toward committing crimes. If what Jade said was true, what made him such a threat?
"What happens when we run out of food?" Finn questioned.
"Uh..." Preston started, pulling out of his pocket a magazine instead of looking through the rest of the list.
"You still read those types of magazines? Aren't you ten?" Jade remarked, her face scrunching up.
Mark could see that it was a Victoria Secret magazine with a cover of a girl in her undergarments on a beach. It was printed in bold letters that it was some semi-annual sale from 2013.
"Well, there isn't a girl who wears those sorts of things around here that I've seen anyway. Well, Mia does," Preston sighed. "Victoria Secret magazines are not any different than getting a cooking magazine."
"Mia has stolen most of the bras she wears," Will said. "No more teachers paying for our charges."
Mark felt he missed a whole chunk of information in the conversation. How did Victoria Secret and cooking magazines tie together?
"Everyone knows that you're a creep, so people ignore the cute stuff," Jade said.
Tumbles slowly stumbled over to their desks. It was as if someone had been tiptoeing through a tripwire. Gripping his desk in front of him, she glanced back at Preston.
"Do you guys know anything about the substance?" her high voice questioned.
The substance was something he hadn't really seen, but he'd seen the damage that had been done by Ashley. There were two giant holes at Uden Academy; one in the sports office and the other in a classroom. He heard there was also one in Simcoe now, but that hole had killed people.
"All I know is that it's purple, and some freak had it leaking through her organs," Finn remarked, disgust etched on his face. "One of those had been recreated."
"A lot of the children that fell in died. I think she's doing it for attention," Trevor spat, rolling his eyes.
Mark didn't exactly know Ashley well since he didn't talk to her much. Most of the time, they were at the beach in the summer or hanging out at his house. Since they both played competitive volleyball too, a lot of the time they spent practicing both beach and regular.
"Showing off that she can make holes and doesn't have blood? Doubtful," Jade spat.
"You can create ice," Trevor hissed.
"I don't care about my supernatural ability," Jade dismissed, focusing back on the paper in front of her.
In that moment, Cindy appeared inside the classroom, looking around. "Dang it," she muttered, standing. "Jason's not here, right?"
Mark shook his head as Preston turned invisible, dropping the magazine on the ground. He wondered what she needed from Jason, but then again, he had been helping the town a lot.
"Did that freak kill someone?" Trevor spat, rolling up some of the paper he tore.
"Ashley keeps creating holes while kids keep dying and getting injured," Cindy said.
"We can help keep her in check," Henry said, standing in the doorway with some others he didn't recognize.
It seemed strange that Stick wasn't with him since the two had always been together at school. The only person he recognized was Isaac, who was in his math class before this all started. Friendships have been tested since the bubble began, especially his own with Jason.
"I'm not asking you to kill her!" Cindy panicked.
"If that freak is abusing power, she should be killed," Henry said, placing the wooden bat at his side.
"Weren't you supposed to be guarding the hardware store?" Trevor remarked while standing at his desk, arms crossed.
"Shift change," Henry slyly said.
People fighting over killing someone he partly knew seemed extreme. It's not like he knew what was going on, but murder shouldn't be the top answer.
"Why don't you just lock her up?" Mark questioned.
"She melts surfaces," Preston stated, revealing himself and leaning on the teacher's desk.
"Murder seems the plausible answer," Henry snarled, holding his bat in both hands. "It isn't normal society."
"Plus, you know how she has that nasty stuff that leaks from her body," Trevor implied as he sat back on the desk chair.
Cindy still remained quiet and teleported away from the classroom. Murder now in this place? Soon enough, everyone will be causing wars and fighting. Plus, hunting for Ashley, who seemed to be a freak, there seemed to be no break when it came to doing anything here.
Do you think it's smart they kill Ashley after the harm she's been causing?
