Prologue

2019

3 years since 'The Rising' began.

Civilization has fallen.

Vampires rule the streets.

Only whispers of a human saviour,

Have given mankind hope.

When I wake, the world is still gone. Only fragments remain. Bits and pieces of the people and things that were once whole. The last I remember was the swirling masses of thick black fog growing like a colourless mephitis, muffling both sound and sight. And then darkness...

I could feel my brain urging my eyes to open, helplessly begging, but with no prevail. Every now and then I would be able to hear someone shout, a muffled sound as though I was drowning underwater. My senses muted, hopes abandoned. I was nothing, simply floating in darkness.

I don't know who I am or where I came from, what I look like or how I got here. It's like someone erased my memories. Of course, that would be impossible.

So you can imagine my surprise when a low growl reaches my ears - a snarl so vicious it almost sounded... inhumane? And then, a deep, guttural voice ordered, "There she is. Take her," its voice laced with malice, followed with a terrifying roar.

I could hear the faint sound of a door slamming open and suddenly the snarls were much more comprehensible. It was now clear that there was more than one... whatever they are. Their beastly grunts merged together until it was just simply noise.

All of a sudden, it became much harder to breathe. Tension sparked the air, you could almost taste their detest. I could hear their heavy footsteps nearing my still body. With every step, the odd creatures groaned louder and louder. Soon, it were so close, it seemed as though it was hovering right over my face. Their snarls were almost deafening until the sounds suddenly stopped. It was so quiet you could almost hear a pin drop.

Their eerie silence brought on a new wave of panic. I urged my eyes to open, my body to move. But I was helpless. My body simply wasn't willing. And that's when I felt the pain. An indescribable ache resonating from the soft flesh of my neck, a torturing agony that almost felt... familiar?

As the beast sucked, I felt a faint tingle in my fingers. It was extremely odd, as though the longer the animal bit me, the more I could feel, the more I became me. My finger twitched as I began to gain control. As I began to feel again. And oh, it was a marvellous feeling. Warmth flooded throughout my body and for the first time for as long as I could remember, I no longer felt like a living corpse. I no longer felt like I was drowning.

But then the feeling disappeared, almost as soon as it arrived. It was because, I realised, the creature had detracted its fangs from my throat. It had stopped sucking. Immediately, I sensed something was wrong. The creature called out, almost as though it was asking for help. Its body letting out long groans of agony.

Then, I felt a sticky substance spray my face and neck. A strong smell of metal filled the air... It smelt like blood. I'd recognise that scent anywhere. The groans were quicker now, and louder too. The only sound was the result of his unusual torment.

I fought for my eyes to open. Pleaded with all my being. When all of a sudden i felt a strange pull and my body sprang up into a sitting position almost as though it knew I needed to defend myself against these... things. Large gasps of breath escaped my body, like I had just ran a marathon. There was a soft throb on my neck and as I looked down I realised I was wearing a thin, cotton, knee-length dress, and nothing else. My chest and neck was coated with blood, my blood. My eyes took in the room around me, I could just about make out that I was lying on a hospital bed, but this didn't look like a hospital. Maybe at some point, it could've been one, but now it was dark with equipment disregarded all over the floor and of course, there were three demons growling on my right.

They looked almost... human? But their unnatural stature, sharp claws, ragged and ripped clothes with blood-red eyes told me something else. There were two of them in the far end of the room and one right next to my hospital bed. The one closest to me was vomiting, it looked as though it was gasping for breath. Blood was spraying out of its mouth and it began to slowly stumble back, before collapsing on the floor, its body spazzing like it was suffering a seizure before randomly going still.

My eyes snapped to the two remaining creatures, a large part of me hoped that they too, would collapse and die. But I had no such luck. The one on the left lunged towards me and before I know it I had grabbed it and threw it over my body. Just as I was about to leap off the bed to finish the job, the second creature came running towards me and grabbed onto my waist, throwing me across the room. Damn. These things were fast. As it came charging towards me, my eyes layed upon a small knife on the counter. I grabbed it and stuck it out in front of me and soon the creatures chest was impaled on the edge.

I quickly yanked it out and ran towards the last remaining creature. I jumped on top of it and swung us onto the floor. It was then lying back-first, with me straddling the creatures legs, so it was unable to move. I grabbed the knife and swiped it across its neck multiple times like a manic women possessed. But nothing was happening. Confused, something urged me to stab the knife into its chest, so I did. And soon enough, its body stilled. Showing no signs on life.

I looked down at the beast and the feeling of disgust overwhelmed me. What was it? It was beyond anything I'd ever seen before. Paranoia filled my senses, what if there were more out there? I could hear the faint sound of screaming and gun shots. That means there must be other people too, right?

All I know, is that I'm awake, and it's because that creature somehow resurrected me with its bite. But one thing was for certain: I definitely not was one of them.

By the way, this is a follow-up from the TV series. Call it some form of fanfic if you want lol. Just thought I'd mention it...  but it can be read without watching the programme. You don't need to watch the TV series in order to understand this book. Cool.
