Chapter 41
Nelly had busted Anna's lip. Anna had defeated Nelly in two fights, so Nelly and Alice decided to team up against Anna. She almost defeated the two girls until Alice held Anna's arms and Nelly punched her in the face before she had the chance to dodge her fist.
Rhys was furious as he watched it happen. He ripped Alice off Anna and cupped Anna's face in his hands. He pressed his thumb against her swelling lip. She flinched before pulling his hands off. He made them all go back into the church after.
By the morning, most of the swelling had already gone down in her lip.
Rhys insisted on joining Anna and Huxley as they walked down to the waterfall. He stayed a few steps behind them as Anna and Huxley laughed and joked with each other. He scowled when he watched Huxley throw his arm around Anna.
He stayed silent as they watched the waterfall. The cool mist fell against his skin. He kept his hands behind his back as he watched Anna.
Anna watched Rhys from the corner of her vision. She hoped that he would get bored and head back to the church. Anna leaned over and whispered to Huxley.
"How do you think we can get him to leave?" she said, cocking her head toward Rhys.
"Oh, I know how," Huxley said. He cleared his throat and stood up straighter. "Why don't we get hot chocolate? You know, the kind with whip cream and little marshmallows?"
Anna could hear Rhys audibly sigh. She smiled and clasped her hands in front of her chest.
"That's a wonderful idea," she said. "Let's go!"
Rhys rolled his eyes and shook his head. Huxley bit down on his lip to suppress a smile. Anna followed him as he headed for the stone stairs that led up to the garden in front of the row of hotels. Rhys looked toward the direction of the church before walking behind Anna and Huxley.
They walked among the series of benches that sat in front of the trees. The leaves were a variety of autumn colours. The flowers had all died and dark wood chips sat in the flower beds.
Huxley stepped in front of Anna and turned to face her and Rhys. Rhys took the opportunity to step beside Anna. Huxley had a goofy smile as he ran his fingers through his hair.
"Do you even know where we are going?" Rhys asked.
"Finding the hot chocolate is half of the journey," Huxley said. "You need to be more adventurous."
"I'm plenty adventurous," Rhys said.
"I seriously doubt that," Huxley said. "You are usually too moody to -"
Huxley's words were cut off as he screamed. His hands flew down to his chest. A stake was protruding through his chest. Blood was spurting out and coating his hands. A trail of blood rolled down from the corner of his mouth. He fell onto his knees before toppling over to his side. Anna's hands flew up to her mouth. Shock had overtaken her body and she was unable to scream.
Jonathan was standing behind Huxley. His crossbow was still in the air. A small mirror facing outward was anchored onto the front of the bow. He pulled down the scarf that was wrapped around his nose, mouth, and chin. He narrowed his eyes on Anna.
"Anna," he said in disbelief. He lowered his crossbow. "Oh my god, are you okay? I have been looking everywhere for you."
Anna's chest ached as she looked down at Huxley's body. His skin had gone pale. Black veins protruded against his skin and laced his body. His soul was now gone to hell. The nicest person Anna had met since that fateful night at the club was now gone.
Anna gritted her teeth. She closed her eyes. She could not tell but they had gone black. Rhys put his hand on Anna's shoulder and pushed her behind his body.
"You know her?" Rhys asked.
"That's my baby sister," Jonathan said.
"What?" Rhys bared his teeth as he looked behind himself at Anna. "You are a Nightingale?"
Jonathan raised the bow and looked into the mirror. He could not see Rhys's reflection. He kept the bow aimed at Rhys. Anna knew that Jonathan's aim was even better than hers. In one quick movement of his finger, they would both be dead.
"Get away from her, you bloodsucker," Jonathan said. "You better have not hurt her."
Anna stepped out from behind Rhys. Jonathan gasped when he saw her eyes. He lowered his weapon as he shook his head. Anna balled her hands up into fists.
"Oh, Anna," he said. He lifted the bow again and lined up his shot for Anna's chest. "You understand why I have to do this."
Anna's eyes glanced down to Huxley. Her body trembled as she thought about how she will never see Huxley's goofy smile again. She looked at Jonathan and ran. She darted from side to side like Jonathan had taught her so that he could not keep his aim. She grabbed the front of the bow. Jonathan was caught off guard by her attack, so he was vulnerable to her kick. She hit him in the back of the knees and he toppled backward.
Anna climbed on top of Jonathan. Her gums ached as her fangs protruded. She threw the bow to the side. It skidded across the cement. Anna had Jonathan's wrists in a tight grip. He fought against her and she struggled to pin him down.
"Anna, you're one of them now," Jonathan said. "You know you have to die."
"You killed Huxley," she cried.
"You made friends with those monsters?"
Anna tilted her head back and bared her fangs. Jonathan's eyes grew wide as he tried to get out from under her weight. Anna's legs were pressed against the knives strapped to his hips, trapping them away from his reach.
She wanted to rip his throat out.
Rhys grabbed her arm and hauled her onto her feet. He grabbed the back of her jacket and ran. Anna stumbled as she tried to keep up with his pace. She looked back to see Jonathan getting up onto his feet.
They ran out of the garden. Across the busy street was a line of taxis in front of the hotels. They dodged traffic as they hurried across the street. Rhys opened the back door of a cab and shoved Anna into the backseat.
Rhys gave the directions to the church as he slammed the door shut.
"And hurry," he added.
The driver nodded his head before jerking the wheel to the side to pull out of the spot. He drove like they were the stars of an action film.
"What was that?" Rhys asked, turning in his seat.
"Don't be mad." Anna held out her hands.
"I'm furious," Rhys said. "Give me a good reason not to kill you."
"Um...." Anna tried to give him an innocent smile. "Because you love me."
Rhys glared and Anna swallowed past the lump forming in her throat.
"I would have never turned you if I knew that you were a Nightingale," he said. "Why did you not tell me?"
"You guys did not give me much of a chance," she said. "Remember that I did not ask for this!"
Rhys sighed before closing his eyes. His fingers were curled around the seat so tight that his knuckles were turning white.
"Do not say a word of this to the others," he said.
"They may already know," Anna said.
Rhys's eyes flew open. His dark irises were now completely black. Anna's chest tightened and she could feel herself tremble. He was definitely going to rip her head off.
"Excuse me?" he seethed.
"Not everyone, just Drew and Huxley." Mentioning Huxley's name made tears prick at the back of her eyes. She envisioned her friend lying on the ground of the garden with an arrow through his chest. "Now, I guess not Huxley."
"But you told Drew?"
Anna opened her mouth, but she did not know what to say so she nodded. Rhys bared his fangs. Did the taxi driver see any of this? Was he too focused on the road?
"What made you tell Drew and not me?" he asked.
"I knew Drew wouldn't be this angry," she said.
Rhys punched the back of the seat. The driver let out a curse in a foreign language that Anna could not place. She was just glad he was not taking his anger out on her.
"Dammit, Anna," he said. "You should have told me right away. How do I not know that you were the one telling Jonathan where we were this whole time? Are you the reason they found us in the Yukon and blew up our car?"
"How would I have talked to Jonathan?" she asked. "I haven't had a phone this whole time."
"There have been phones in the hotels and there was one at Oz's place."
"I know you are from the past, but no one memorizes phone numbers anymore. Besides, I'm the one that told us to go to Niagara Falls. Would I have done that if I were on Jonathan's side?"
The cab driver pulled up to the front of the church. Rhys growled as he handed the driver a few bills. He stormed out of the taxi and Anna followed. He burst through the church doors. The vampires were lounging on the pews as a classic black-and-white movie played from the projector.
"It's official," Rhys announced, catching the attention of most of the vampires. "We are at war."
