Chapter 23
Anna's eyes fluttered open as fingers ran through her hair. She rubbed her aching neck as she straightened. Rhys was beside her smirking. Embarrassment washed over her when she realized that she was sleeping on his shoulder.
It was dark outside, and the car was lit up with the bright lights of the gas station. They were the only ones in the car.
"I'm sorry," Anna said.
"For what?" Rhys asked.
"For falling asleep on you," she said. "I didn't realize how tired I was."
"It's alright. You needed to rest."
Anna unbuckled the seatbelt and climbed out of the car. Drew was pumping gas into the car, and Huxley and Calvin were inside. Anna looked around to see that after countless hours of driving, the scenery looked the same. Anna silently cursed herself that Canada was such a large country.
"I want to drive," Anna said.
"Not happening," Rhys said.
"Give her a shot," Drew said. "It's a highway. She cannot screw up going straight."
"Thanks for the confidence, guys," she said.
"Fine," Rhys said. "Just for a few hours."
Anna smiled. Drew tossed her the keys and she caught them in the air. Calvin and Huxley came out of the store with a couple of bags in their hands. Anna climbed into the driver's seat. She ran her hand along with the leather of the steering wheel.
"Woah, what's this?" Calvin asked as he got into the backseat.
Rhys opened the door to the passenger's side and stepped in.
"Anna is going to drive for a little bit," Rhys said as he buckled his seatbelt. "You three need to sleep."
"So now you're in charge of our bedtimes too?" Calvin asked sarcastically.
Rhys turned and glared at him. Calvin snickered and leaned against the door. Huxley sighed when he saw that he was going to have to sit in the middle again.
Anna turned the key in the ignition and the car revved up. She had not been behind the wheel of a car since she came back to British Columbia from P.E.I. She lived down the block from her campus so she did not see the reason to own a car. She reached under the seat and adjusted it so that she could comfortably reach the pedals.
Rhys's eyes were locked on her as she pulled out of the gas station. She merged onto the highway as Rhys kept his scrutinizing gaze on her. Anna looked over at him a few times to watch him watching her.
"I'm not going to crash your car," Anna said.
"I don't know that," Rhys said.
"I know you've been driving since there were horses and buggies, but I am perfectly capable of driving a car."
Huxley laughed. "You know she's right."
Rhys shook his head. He ran his fingers through his dark hair before resting his elbow on the window.
"I just want to get there as soon as possible," Rhys said. "You are driving like you are the oldest one in the car."
Anna glanced down at the speedometer and raised an eyebrow.
"I'm going the speed limit," she said.
"You need to get over to the left lane and go about twenty kilometers faster," Rhys said.
"Fine," she said.
Anna flicked on the blinker and merged lanes. She pressed her foot further down on the pedal and sped up. She looked over at Rhys for approval and he nodded. Anna kept a tight grip on the wheel as driving this fast seemed foreign to her. She wanted to change the radio station to something she would rather listen to, but she was afraid to let go of the wheel.
Rhys drummed his fingers on his knee along to the music. Anna glanced in the rearview mirror a few times to check on the backseat, but she kept forgetting that she could not see their reflection. Her eyes would dart over to the clock on the dash to check the time. Over an hour had ticked by without them saying anything.
The radio station was transitioning into static. It was the middle of the night and they were one of the only few cars on the highway. Anna had not slowed down since Rhys had told her to speed.
Rhys looked into the backseat before switching the radio station. Drew and Calvin each had their heads against the window. Calvin had the hood from his sweater up and was lightly snoring. Huxley's eyes were closed and his head was bobbing.
"They are asleep," Rhys said.
"Really?" Anna tried to look behind her seat but was afraid to take her eyes off the road. "You should probably get some sleep too."
"I'm not sleeping while you're driving," he said.
"You think I'm going to kill us? At least if you die it will be in your sleep."
Rhys chuckled and shook his head. He took another look at the backseat before he put his elbow on the centre console and his hand on Anna's thigh. She tightened her grip on the wheel as she looked over at him. He smiled at her.
Anna rarely saw him in a good mood. She thought back to when she talked to Rhys while they were travelling to Yukon. She had him trapped in a car and she could ask him why he fed her his blood. She knew that she had the upper hand right now. She was the one driving and Rhys could not stop her. She knew that the worst he could do was not answer.
"So," Anna said.
"This better be good," Rhys said when he heard her hesitate.
"You said you were going to tell me your story one day," she said.
"I didn't say it would be today."
"I'm curious."
Rhys shook his head and took another look at the backseat.
"Do they know?" Anna asked. "Do you all know each other's backstory?"
"Yes," Rhys said. "But we have all been together for over a hundred years."
"Aren't I one of you now?" Anna asked.
Rhys's hand felt heavy on her thigh. She was uncomfortable under his touch, but she could not seem to let go of the wheel to push him off of her. She noticed that he was touching her more and she was not stopping him. She wondered if this was all part of her feeding off of Rhys's blood.
"You are one of us," Rhys said. "None of us know your backstory. Let us hear it."
"You already know everything about me," Anna said.
She cursed herself for bringing up this conversation. She could not give away any clues that she was a Nightingale.
"I know that you are a writer from B.C.," Rhys said. "What was your childhood like?"
"The usual," Anna said.
"That's pretty vague."
"That's funny. You are the King of vague."
Rhys chuckled. Anna forced herself to laugh. She was afraid of looking suspicious.
"What battlefield did you die on?" Anna asked.
"Why did you really have a stake and rosary on you the night you died?" Rhys asked.
Anna bit down on her lip to stop herself from gasping. She told them that she was just paranoid because of the novels she writes, but Rhys must have not believed that. She wondered if he had any suspicions about her being a Nightingale.
"Who turned you into a vampire?" Anna asked.
He curled his fingers tighter into her thigh. Anna chewed on her bottom lip. She could not convince herself to push his hand off of her leg.
"Where in England are you from?" Anna asked, trying her luck with a new question. "When did you come to Canada?"
"Question time is done," Rhys said.
Anna glared at Rhys before looking back at the road. She tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She knew that she would not have Rhys in this position again. She did not want to waste this opportunity. She knew it was a risky question but she wanted to ask it.
"Who is Hannah?" she asked.
"Pull over," Rhys said as he took his hand off of her thigh.
"We're on a highway," she said. "I can't just pull over."
"Take the next exit, and don't say anything to me until we switch spots."
She pushed her foot down further on the pedal and sped up. She passed the next exit, and it was a struggle for her to not obey Rhys's orders. Rhys turned in his seat and Anna was afraid to look at him. She knew that he would be staring daggers at her.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Who is she?" Anna asked. "Was she a girlfriend?"
"Anna, I said not to speak."
"You can't boss me around."
"Do not mention Hannah again."
"You'll have to tell me who she is one day."
Huxley yawned in the backseat. He rubbed his sore neck as his eyes fluttered open. He leaned forward between the two front seats.
"You know, I hate it when Moms and Dads fight," Huxley said.
Rhys glared at him and Anna chuckled. She was happy that they woke Huxley. He always seemed to be saving her.
"We don't need your sarcasm, Hux," Rhys said.
"Why don't you just tell her?" Huxley asked. "You never talk about her. Talking about things is the way to heal."
"No one is talking about Hannah," Rhys said.
"I hope you know that I will find out eventually," Anna said.
Rhys pointed out the window at the next exit coming up.
"Anna Hollingsworth, you are going to pull over," Rhys said.
Without thinning, Anna's hand flicked on the blinker and she merged to the far right lane. Anger bubbled in her chest as she was mad for following Rhys's commands. She pulled off of the highway and off to the side of the road. Rhys opened up his door, and it woke Calvin and Drew in the back seat. Drew sat straighter, and Calvin pulled his hood tighter around his head.
"What's going on?" Drew asked.
Rhys walked around the car and opened up Anna's door. She rolled her eyes as she climbed out.
"Rhys is having hissy-fit," Huxley said.
Rhys grabbed Anna's wrist and yanked her away from the car. She stumbled over her feet, not expecting such quick movements. She tried to yank her arm away, but his grip was too tight.
"Let go of me!" Anna shouted as she fought against his grip.
"Listen to me," Rhys said. "I don't ever want to hear you talking about her again."
Drew climbed out of the car. Anna looked behind her when she heard his door slam shut. Drew marched over to them and was shaking his head.
"Rhys, you can't grab her like that," Drew said.
"Thank you," Anna said.
She yanked her arm back one more time and Rhys pulled her forward so that she stumbled into his chest.
"Get back in the car," Rhys ordered Drew.
Drew shook his head. He tucked a piece of hair that had fallen out of his bun behind his ear.
"She's dead," Drew said. "You're going to have to get over her suicide sometime."
"Suicide?" Anna raised an eyebrow.
Anna let out a cry as Rhys crushed her arm in his grasp. Drew grabbed Anna's elbow and pulled her away from Rhys. Anna rubbed her sore wrist.
"Hannah killed herself," Drew said. "She didn't want to be a vampire."
"Everyone back in the car!" Rhys yelled. "I don't want to hear another word."
"Just tell her about it," Drew said.
"No," Rhys said. "Now, get in the car."
Anna pulled her elbow out of Drew's hold. She walked around the car and sat down in the passenger's seat. She crossed her arms over her chest and kept her gaze straight. Drew and Rhys were arguing outside. Huxley's face was full of concern as he reached out to put his hand on Anna's shoulder. She did not flinch when he touched her.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"How well did you know Hannah?" she asked.
"I only knew her for a few days," he said. "Why?"
"I want you to tell me everything you know about her."
Huxley looked over at Calvin to make sure that he was still sleeping. He leaned in closer to Anna and lowered his voice.
"Hannah was a Nightingale," he said.
Anna's eyes went wide as she looked over at Huxley. She wanted to ask more questions, but Rhys and Drew got back into the car. Huxley leaned back in his seat and Anna turned as she looked back out the window.
The car was silent as they drove back onto the highway. Anna tried to fall asleep, but her mind was racing as she thought about Hannah Nightingale.
