Chapter 22
Neither Rhys nor Anna mentioned anything to the others about killing Kara. Anna was sitting next to the window and Huxley was stuffed in between her and Calvin. Drew was in the front seat making phone calls.
The car ride was quiet for a few hours. Anna listened to the one half of Drew's conversations as he begged for people to let them stay with them. Huxley was quiet and when Anna looked over at him his head was bobbing as he was fast asleep.
Rhys was driving aimlessly down the highway. He pulled over to get gas and Anna got out of the car to stretch her legs. Huxley woke and yawned as he stretched his arms up over his head. They went inside and bought a couple of snacks.
When they got back into the car Drew was on the phone again. Rhys pulled out of the gas station and back onto the highway. Anna and Huxley passed a bag of non-salted chips in between them.
"Really?" Drew said to the person on the phone with a smile on his face.
It perked all of their attention and they looked at him.
"No, we'll get there as soon as we can," Drew said. "Thank you so much."
Drew hung up the phone. He turned in his seat so he could face them.
"I got us a place to stay for a little bit," he said.
"Where?" Rhys asked.
"With Sybil," he said.
Rhys chuckled and shook his head.
"That's a name I haven't heard in a long time," he said.
"Who is Sybil?" Anna asked.
"Drew's ex-girlfriend," Calvin said.
Calvin snickered and Drew scowled at him.
"She is not my ex," Drew said.
"Is she a vampire?" Anna asked.
"She's a witch," Drew said.
"More like a bitch," Calvin said.
Huxley held his hands up in defense.
"Woah, I'm staying out of this," he said.
"Are we even heading in the right direction?" Rhys asked.
"Um." Drew scratched the back of his neck. "You kind of are. We need to go to Ottawa."
Calvin bolted up so that he was sitting straight. He shut his book and pushed Huxley to the side. He poked his head between the two front seats. Huxley was leaning against Anna, squishing her against the door.
"Ottawa?" Calvin asked. "You can't be serious. That's almost forty hours away from us."
"Correction," Drew said. "According to my phone, it is fifty-seven hours away."
"What?" Calvin said. "No, not happening."
"Where else do you plan on us going?" Rhys asked.
Calvin shook his head. He leaned back in his seat and folded his arms across his chest. He was tapping his one foot as he looked out the window.
"Rhys, I'm going to need you to pull over," Calvin said.
"I'm not dropping you off on the side of the highway," Rhys said. "We are all going to Ottawa."
"I'm not spending fifty-seven hours crammed in this car with the four of you," Calvin said.
"Maybe it will go by fast," Huxley said. "We could play some road trip games."
"I swear to God, Huxley," Calvin said. "If you make me play a game of I-Spy I will stake you."
Huxley shrugged. Drew turned around in his seat and turned up the music on the radio. Calvin shifted his weight in his seat as he looked out the window.
"I have an idea," Huxley said.
"We don't want to hear it," Calvin said.
"Anyways." Huxley did not let Calvin's comment phase him. "I think Anna should give us a summary of her book."
Anna let out a nervous giggle and shook her head.
"No," she said. "It's too embarrassing."
"I read a bit at your apartment last week," Huxley said. "It was good. Didn't you go to school for this? You should be proud."
Anna balled up her fist and lightly punched Huxley in his arm. She bit down on her lip to try and stop the heat from rushing up to her cheeks. Drew looked over his shoulder and smiled at her.
"You write paranormal stories?" Drew asked. "What do you know about vampires?"
Anna looked down at her hands to realize that she was fiddling with her fingers. She had to tip-toe around this topic. She did not want to reveal that she had been studying vampires her entire life.
"I only know what I've read from novels," Anna said. "I was inspired by Dracula."
Drew scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"I hate that book," he said. "I have never once been in a castle or worn a cape."
"There are no castles in Canada," Rhys said.
"I was born in England too," he said.
Anna smiled and found the perfect opportunity to change the topic off of her novel. She leaned forward to see Rhys. His grip was tight on the steering wheel and his knuckles were turning white.
"You're from England?" she asked.
"It doesn't matter," Rhys said.
"Where in England?" she asked. "When did you come to Canada?"
"Anna, you need to be quiet," Rhys said.
"You know you're not allowed to talk to women like that anymore," Huxley said. "We have time to kill. Why not a little story time?"
"Fine," Rhys snapped. "Tell Anna about how Lucia had you as a mindless zombie when I found you."
Huxley crossed his arms over his chest and sunk back into the seat.
"You found Hannah in the same explosion," Huxley said. "I at least chose to stick around."
"Explosion?" Anna raised an eyebrow. "What explosion?"
"That's it!" Rhys shouted. "No one is going to say another word."
Rhys turned up the radio even louder. They sat quietly with a thick cloud of tension in the car.
--
They all got out of the car at the next gas station Rhys pulled over at. Anna stretched her arms up over her head. None of them had said a word for the past three hours. Rhys was seething as he raced down the highway. Drew reached out and put his hand on Rhys's shoulder.
"You need to rest, bud," he said. "I'll drive for the next little bit."
"I'm fine," Rhys said.
"There are fifty-four hours left," he said. "You can't drive all of that. We'll take turns."
Rhys looked over his shoulder to see Anna and Huxley buying another bag of chips inside. Calvin was standing by the sidewalk smoking a cigarette.
"Sit next to Anna in the back," Drew said. "If Calvin doesn't sit in the front he will probably spontaneously combust."
Rhys surprised Drew by letting out a chuckle and nodding.
"You're right," Rhys said. "That will stop him from bitching."
"Exactly," Drew said.
Anna and Huxley walked out of the gas station. Anna passed Rhys a water bottle and smiled. Rhys smiled back at her.
"Feeling better?" she asked.
"Yes," Rhys said. "Drew is going to drive for a bit."
Anna nodded. Huxley climbed into the back of the car. Rhys opened the door and Anna slid into the middle. Calvin hurried over to the car and his face lit up when he realized that he got to sit up front.
Drew pulled the car out of the gas station and back onto the highway. Rhys put his hand on Anna's thigh. She instinctively covered his hand with hers. He turned his hand over so that their fingers were interlocked together. Anna wanted to pull away, but her hand was frozen. She looked over at Huxley to see that he was looking out the window.
Rhys said nothing as they continued to drive in peace.
