Chapter 21
"I have a question," Huxley said.
"I don't want to hear it," Rhys said.
"Why are they called apartments if they are all stuck together?"
The sun had set and Huxley had not stopped speaking since they had left the gas station. Drew spent hours making phone calls and did not have any good news. He had stopped calling and was staring out the window. Anna's back and knees ached as she sat squished between Drew and Calvin.
"Hux, be quiet," Rhys said.
"Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?" Huxley asked. "That would sure help them beat traffic."
"What would they even be in a rush for?" Rhys asked. "They're dead."
"We're dead and in a rush to get somewhere."
Anna bit down on her lip to stop herself from laughing.
"Let's stay quiet," Rhys said.
They sat in silence for a few minutes. Rhys tapped his finger against the wheel as he sped down the highway.
"Do you think illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?" Huxley asked.
"That's it!" Rhys shouted. "We're stopping for the night. I can't deal with this anymore."
"What did I do?"
"Hux, you get on every one of my damn nerves."
Rhys pulled off at the next off-ramp. He drove through the town until he found a motel. They passed many fast-food restaurants, bars, and thrift stores. Rhys pulled into the parking lot of the motel. He turned off the engine and turned in his seat.
"Hux, do not follow me in," Rhys said. "Drew, come with me."
Drew patted Anna's leg before getting out of the car. Rhys slammed the door shut, and she watched them go into the lobby. Huxley turned around in his seat snickering.
"You're welcome," he told Anna and Calvin. "If it wasn't for me we would have been driving all night."
Anna laughed and shook her head.
"You're our hero," she said.
Anna climbed out of the car. She stretched her arms up over her head. The air was crisp, but she was still wearing Elena's thick winter jacket and boots. She felt guilty that Elena did one nice thing for her and Anna ended up stealing from her.
She could see Rhys and Drew through the large glass windows as they talked to the girl behind the desk. Rhys handed her a few bills and took two keys from her. They walked out of the building.
"Get your bag, Anna," Rhys said.
"Let me guess," she said wryly. "I'm sharing a room with you."
"You're smart," he said.
"I want to room with Huxley."
"Not happening."
Rhys popped the trunk and Anna grabbed her duffel bag. Rhys picked up his bag and she followed him as he walked to one of the rooms. The rest of the boys grabbed their bags and headed up the metal staircase to one of the rooms.
Rhys opened the door, and it was an outdated room. It reminded her of the room they killed the prostitute in. She did notice one big difference. There was only one bed in the room instead of two. Rhys dropped his bag on the bed.
"What is this?" Anna asked.
"What?" Rhys asked.
"One bed?" She raised an eyebrow. "You can't be serious."
"We've been sharing a bed for like a week."
"So we must continue this trend?"
"Listen, there was only this left and I'm not leaving you alone."
Anna rolled her eyes. She set her bag down on the other side of the bed. She unzipped Elena's jacket and laid it down on the bed. She opened up her bag and went to look for her pajamas.
"Did you bring a dress with you?" Rhys asked.
Anna stopped searching through her bag and looked up at Rhys.
"Why would I need a dress?" she asked.
"Because I'm hungry," he said.
"I need a dress to go get a burger?"
"Not that kind of hungry."
Anna's stomach twisted into a knot. She thought back to killing Carson at the bar. She did not want to repeat that.
"I'm not hungry though," she said.
"I know," he said. "You ate a hunter this morning."
"So why do I need to put on a dress?"
"You're going to get me someone to feed on. It helps if you look like a floozy."
"A floozy? Wow, you are old."
Rhys scowled. Anna put her hands on her hips. Rhys grabbed her bag and searched through it. Anna's stomach clenched as she remembered her grandmother's notebook sitting at the bottom of the bag. She grabbed the duffel bag and ripped it out of his grip.
"Fine!" Anna said. "I have that stupid dress Alice bought me."
"Go put it on," he said.
Anna pulled out the revealing red dress Alice had gotten her. Anna regretted putting it in her bag as she hastily packed before leaving. She stormed over to the bathroom to get changed.
She slipped on the tight dress and arranged the top so that her chest was not spilling out. She pulled the elastic out of her hair and combed it with her fingers before tying it back in a braid. She stepped out into the room to see Rhys pulling a clean shirt over his head.
She looked through her bag again and realized that she did not pack the pair of high heels Alice had given her. She grabbed her Converse and laced them up. She pulled out the leather jacket Alice gave her and slipped it on.
Rhys pulled on a toque and zipped up his jacket. He shoved his hands into his pocket. His eyes scanned Anna's body.
"What are you wearing?" he asked.
"You told me to wear this," she said.
Rhys shook his head and rolled his eyes. He went toward the door and Anna was compelled to follow him. Her feet were moving without her realization. She stayed behind them as they got into the car.
"Aren't the others coming?" Anna asked.
"No," he said. "This one is just you and I."
Rhys fiddled with the radio until he landed on a classic rock station. He pulled out of the parking lot and drove down the street. Anna stayed quiet as Rhys's eyes surveyed the town. He pulled into the parking lot of a small bar.
"Why do you always go to bars and clubs to feed?" Anna asked.
"Because people are easier to influence when they are intoxicated," Rhys said. "Try getting a sober person to follow a stranger. It's nearly impossible."
"So, let me guess," Anna said. "You want me to seduce some guy and bring him out back?"
"You catch on pretty quick, sweetheart."
Anna shook her head as she stepped out of the car. The cold night air bit at her bare legs. She did not look back at Rhys as she walked into the bar.
It was small but packed full of people. The tables were full and the bar was crowded. No one looked at her as she entered. The smell of beer filled her nose, and her feet stuck to the floor as she walked toward the bar.
She glanced over her shoulder to see Rhys waiting by the door. He crossed his arms as he watched Anna.
She squeezed herself between two people at the bar. She looked over at a girl sitting alone. She had a bottle of beer in her hands and her head was hanging down low. Anna looked around the bar to see that this girl was the only person sitting alone.
Anna put her hand on the girl's shoulder. The girl looked up at Anna. She had short dark hair and thick-rimmed glasses. Freckles were splattered across her nose. Anna flashed her a smile.
"Hey there," Anna said.
"Hi," the girl said. She gave Anna a slight smile.
"My name is Anna," she said.
"I'm Kara."
"Kara, do you want to buy me a beer?"
Kara's lips curled into a bigger smile and she nodded. She reached into her pocket, pulled out some money, and bought Anna a beer. Anna looked back at Rhys. His hand was up over his mouth to hide his smirk.
"Are you from around here?" Kara asked. "You don't look familiar."
"No," Anna said. "I'm from out east. I'm just on a bit of a road trip."
"A road trip where?"
"I'm not sure where quite yet."
"Sounds like fun."
"Oh, it sure is interesting."
Anna brought the bottle up to her lips. She kept her eyes locked on Kara as she took a sip. Kara was blushing and kept avoiding Anna's gaze. Anna looked back over at Rhys to see he was still watching her. He pointed to the door behind him with his thumb. Anna knew that he wanted her to bring Kara outside.
The man behind Anna elbowed her in the back as he shifted his weight on the barstool. Anna rolled her eyes and Kara bit down on her lip to suppress a laugh.
"I hate bars," Anna said.
"What made you come out tonight?" Kara asked.
"Boredom," she said. "And I was hungry."
"They have pretty good food here. Do you want to order something?"
Anna looked back at Rhys. He cocked his head to the side and she could tell that he was growing impatient.
"It's not that late yet," Anna said. "Isn't there a restaurant nearby?"
"There's a place with great burgers down the street," Kara said.
"Perfect! Let's go."
Anna took another drink of her beer before setting it down. She set it down before walking through the crowd of people. She stuffed her hands in her pockets and looked over her shoulder to see Kara following her. Anna looked toward the door to see that Rhys was gone.
She stepped outside and saw Rhys leaning against the car. Anna walked toward the car and took another look over her shoulder. Kara was standing in the doorway and raising an eyebrow. Anna spun around.
"Are you coming?" Anna asked.
Kara opened her mouth but did not speak. She shook her head. She was staring at Rhys. Anna glanced over at him before looking at her.
"Don't worry about him," Anna said. "That's just my boyfriend."
"I don't think we're into the same thing," Kara said.
Anna chewed on her lip. She knew that Rhys would not kill Kara in front of the bar, but Anna did not know how to get her out of the bar. Anna walked toward Kara with a smile.
"Listen," Anna said as she got closer. "I think you're really cute."
"You are beautiful," Kara said.
She took a step out of the bar and let the door close behind her. The sound of the bar was muffled. Anna could see Kara's breath in the cold air. She wondered if Kara could see that she was not breathing.
Anna put her hand on Kara's shoulder. Kara leaned her head to the side so that she could continue to look at Rhys.
"Ignore him," Anna said. "He lets me have fun with girls."
"He's not going to watch, is he?" she asked.
Anna shook her head. She cupped the side of Kara's face and leaned in close. Kara's eyes went wide and her breath got caught in her throat. Anna was shocked that she had the confidence to be so close to a stranger. She seemed compelled to bring Rhys someone to eat.
"He's just driving," Anna said. "I promise he'll leave us alone."
Kara sucked in a deep breath before looking Anna in the eyes. Kara leaned forward and pressed her lips against Anna's. Anna slid her other hand off of Kara's shoulder and cupped the other side of her face. She pulled Kara in closer to her. Kara put her hands on Anna's lower back.
Kara pulled away, and her eyes were closed. She looked back in Rhys's direction. Anna looked over her shoulder to see him smirking. Anna smiled before grabbing Kara's hand. She pulled her toward the car.
"Come on," Anna said.
Kara giggled as she followed Anna to the car. Rhys did not say anything as he climbed into the car. Anna opened the door and slid into the backseat and pulled Kara in with her. She kept her hand on Kara's knee as she slid closer to her. Rhys started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.
Rhys drove down the road. Kara's eyes kept darting out the window. Anna ran her fingers through Kara's short hair to try and distract her. She could sense her nervousness as Rhys drove away from the town and down a thin badly paved road.
Anna grabbed Kara's chin and turned her head to face her. She kissed Kara and Kara melted under her grip. Anna distracted her so that she did not realize that they were going further away from the town and were soon surrounded by a thick brush of trees.
Anna pulled away from Kara when Rhys shut off the engine to the car. Kara gasped as she watched Rhys get out of the car. He opened the car door and grabbed her arm. She let out a yelp as he pulled her out of the car. Anna scrambled to get out on the other side.
"What are you doing?" Kara asked as she fought against Rhys's grip.
"Sorry, sweetheart," Rhys said. "I promise I'll make it quick."
"What are you talking about?" she asked. "Anna!"
Kara's eyes were wide with fear as she looked over at Anna. Anna's chest tightened as she watched the girl plead for her life. She knew this was going to happen, but she was not prepared to witness it.
"Just close your eyes," Anna said. "It's probably easier if you don't watch."
"What?" she asked.
She screamed as Rhys's eyes turned dark. He hissed as his fangs protruded. He sunk his teeth deep into her neck. She let out another scream that was soon garbled as the blood rushed into her throat. Anna watched as the colour drained from Kara's body and she went limp in Rhys's arms. Rhys continued to feed off of her until she was drained of blood. He dropped her body onto the long grass which hid her corpse.
Rhys wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. A smear of blood was left behind on his skin. Anna did not say anything as she got into the passenger seat. Rhys got behind the wheel and ran his fingers through his hair.
"Thank you for that," Rhys said. "It was dinner and a show."
Rhys winked and Anna rolled his eyes.
"Why are all men pigs?" Anna asked.
"I was expecting you to lure me out some horny guy," he said. "I was not expecting to watch you make out with a girl."
"Yeah, well, bisexuality keeps you on your toes."
Rhys chuckled as he pulled off the side of the road. Anna shook her head and closed her eyes as she listened to Rhys's music on the radio.
She hated to admit it, but murder was becoming easier for her.
