Chapter 17
Anna fiddled with the knobs on the dashboard until she felt a rush of warm air hit her face. The nights in the Yukon were frigid and Anna felt the cold seep into her bones. Rhys was driving on the bumpy dirt roads. Calvin was driving the other car close behind them.
Rhys had shoved Anna in the car without saying anything to her. He had spent over an hour in Oz's office with Drew. He did not mention anything about their meeting.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"We're going out hunting," he said.
Anna's stomach twisted. There were light cramps in her stomach as she had been growing hungry, but she tried to ignore it. She knew that she was going to have to feed soon before she was overtaken by pain.
"There's a bar outside of town," he said. "It's full of hunters."
"You're going to attack a bar full of vampire hunters?" Anna asked.
"We're hungry, not stupid," he said. "It's a bar full of werewolf hunters."
"That's a thing?"
Rhys looked over at Anna. The corner of his lip twitched into a smirk.
"People in this world don't like what they can't understand," he said. "Every paranormal creature has someone trying to destroy them."
Anna nodded. She had spent her life learning how to kill vampires. She was told that vampires were evil because they murdered innocent people. She was now one of those murderers, but she knew that she had to do it. She would have killed herself if her soul was not going to go to hell.
"We're doing Oz a favour," Rhys said. "It's a way to pay them back for crashing at their place for a week. We benefit from it too."
He put his hand on her knee, and Anna did not feel the compulsion to push him off of her.
"Drew and I will go through the front," he said. "I want you to wait out back with Huxley and Calvin."
Anna nodded. If she could avoid seeing people be murdered she would do it. She had grown used to watching vampires be staked, but she had yet grown used to watching humans scream for their lives.
"No crying either," Rhys said. "I don't need you getting emotional."
"What are you talking about?" Anna asked.
"You were crying after your first kill," he said. "I don't need you doing that again."
"You made me kill a friend. Anyone would be emotional."
Rhys rolled his eyes. He kept his hand on Anna's leg until he pulled into the parking lot of a small bar. Calvin pulled his car up next to Rhys's. Anna zipped up her leather jacket before stepping out of the car.
"Hux, bring Anna out back," Rhys said. "Calvin, you go with them."
"I don't get to have any fun?" Calvin asked.
"You're going to attack from the back."
Calvin nodded. Huxley gave Rhys a salute before waving his arm to motion for Anna to follow him. Her footsteps crunched as she followed them around to the back.
–
Drew stretched his arms up over his head before cracking his knuckles. Rhys stuffed his hands into the pocket of his jacket.
"You ready?" Drew asked.
"I'm always ready," Rhys said. "Let's go."
Drew followed behind Rhys as he walked up to the bar. He could hear the commotion and music coming from inside. He opened the door to see people sitting around tables drinking beers. They stopped talking when the door opened. Rhys and Drew stood at the entrance. The bartender stepped around the bar.
"Who the hell are you?" the bartender asked, clearly not happy about new faces.
"I'm Rhys," Rhys said. "This is Drew."
Rhys tilted his head to the side to motion to Drew. Drew cleared his throat before taking a step forward.
"We're doing someone a favour," Drew said.
"Who?" the bartender asked.
"Oz," Drew said.
The bartender scowled. Rhys chuckled and ran his hand along his jaw. His fingers curled around the handle of the knife in his pocket.
"We don't let dogs into our bar," the bartender said.
"We're not werewolves," Rhys said.
"Who are you then?"
There was murmuring between a few men at one table. There was a large man who kept his eyes jumping between the group and Rhys and Drew. He stood up and cleared his throat. He reached into the waistband of his jeans and set a gun down on the table.
"You boys better leave," the man said.
"We won't be doing that," Rhys said.
"I won't pour you a drink," the bartender said.
"Don't worry," Rhys said. "We'll help ourselves."
Rhys's eyes turned black as his fangs protruded from his gums. The man picked the gun up off of the table and pointed it at Rhys. Drew's eyes turned dark and the veins were like spiderwebs covering his face.
The man fired the gun. The gunshots echoed through the bar. He missed and the bullet shattered the window behind them. The rest of the men stood from their seats.
Drew ran across the bar, knife in hand, to the man with the gun. He dodged the bullets as he got closer. He grabbed the warm barrel of the gun. He thrust the blade forward and buried it in the man's abdomen. Drew ripped the gun out of the man's hand. He turned and fired the gun at the hunters in the bar.
Rhys was tearing the throats out of the hunters on the other side of the bar. He was quick. He made sure to sever the main artery in the men's necks. They were gushing blood and falling to the floor. He was moving fast from person to person. He was not feeding. He was just killing.
The men's screams were gurgling as blood was rushing into their throats. Rhys and Drew were covered in blood.
---
Anna was shivering as she waited beside the dumpster outside of the back door. Huxley had his ear pressed against the door. Calvin was standing with his arms crossed over his chest.
There was a gunshot and then a few screams. Anna's chest tightened as she listened to a succession of gunshots. She never saw any of the boys carry a gun, so she knew that they were being shot at.
"That's our cue," Calvin said.
He pushed past Huxley as he hurried into the bar. Huxley ran his fingers through his hair before looking over at Anna.
"Hide behind the bar," Huxley said. "Rhys would behead me if anything happened to you."
Anna nodded. Huxley grabbed her arm as they walked into the bar.
Anna could see the blood that was splattered all over the wooden walls. Men were lying on the floor and clutching at their bleeding necks. The smell of blood caused Anna's gums to ache as her fangs came out. She wanted to run to one of the men and start feeding despite the crying that echoed in her ears. Huxley pulled her to the side and pushed her down behind the bar.
Anna sat down on the floor. She brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around herself. A new wave of screams came from the men. It reminded her of Carson's crying and pleading just a few nights ago. She covered her ears with her hands.
She listened to another gunshot and Anna squeezed her eyes shut. A man, who sounded very close to her, let out a cry. She opened her eyes to see a man crawling around to the back of the bar to take shelter. He had a bullet in his leg and a trail of blood was following him.
Anna could not tell, but her eyes went black. The man gasped when he saw Anna. The smell of his blood filled her nose and her mouth started to salivate. The cramps were returning to her stomach and she could not control herself.
She lunged forward at the man. She got on top of him and pinned him down to the floor. She let out a hiss and she brought her lips up to his neck. She sunk her teeth into his soft flesh and he let out another scream. Anna had to hold onto his shoulders as he thrashed underneath her. He pushed her off of him and onto the floor. Anna spitted out the piece of flesh in her mouth. A gaping hole was in the man's neck.
She watched as he struggled to breathe. Anna looked down at her hands to see they were covered in blood. She licked the sweet-tasting blood off of her fingers as she watched the man take his last breath. She climbed back on top of him and drained him of his blood.
After feasting, Anna got onto her knees. She peered over the edge of the bar to see the men were feeding off the bloody corpses that were lying on the floor. Her legs shook as she stood.
Rhys heard the movement and pulled himself off of one of the men. His clothes were soaked in blood. Blood was splattered across his face. He raised an eyebrow. He was curious as to why Anna was covered in blood, so he ran behind the bar to look at the dead man. He crouched down next to the man. He rolled the man's head to the side to examine the hole in his neck. He laughed before standing straight.
"Impressive," he said. "Are you still hungry? There are more bodies on the other side."
"No," Anna said. "I want to go."
Rhys reached into his pocket and tossed her his keys. Anna caught them before examining them.
"Go wait in the car," he said. "We'll be out soon."
She looked around one last time at the massacre before turning around. She went out the back door and hurried over to the car. She hit the button on the fob and the lights in the car lit up. She climbed into the passenger seat and started the car so that the vents would blow heat.
She had followed Alice's advice and bought a package of baby wipes at a gas station. She pulled out a few and started scrubbing the blood off of her face. She instinctively went to look in the rearview mirror to see if she removed all of the blood, but she could not see her reflection.
The boys came out of the front door of the bar covered in blood. They were laughing and Drew shoved Huxley in the arm. They went to the other car, but Rhys climbed into the driver's seat. Anna passed him a wipe. He cleaned his face and hands.
He did not say a word as he pulled out of the parking lot. Drew was close behind them as they sped down the road. He had a small smile on his lips as he looked over at Anna. He put his hand back on her leg. She could see the dark blood caked on his fingernails.
"I was right," Rhys said. "You're going to fit in with us just fine."
