Chapter 11

Anna groaned as Rhys shook her shoulder. She was curled up in a ball on her side sleeping. She rolled onto her back and dug the heel of her hands into her eyes. Rhys was leaning over the bed and continued to shake her.

"I'm awake," Anna said.

She swung her hand out to hit Rhys. He took a step back.

"Pack your stuff. We're going," he said. "Now."

"What's going on?" Anna asked as she sat up on the bed.

"That girl Huxley brought home was a vampire hunter," he said. "We need to go before one of them finds out she's dead."

"How do you know that?"

"Her phone went off when we were taking her body out back. The name on the screen was Jonathan Nightingale. He's the biggest vampire hunter in Canada."

Anna bit down on the inside of her cheeks. She did not want to look surprised when she heard her brother's name. Did they go through her phone while she was being transformed? She had not seen her phone since the night she and Jess went to the club.

Anna crawled out of bed. Rhys left the room. Most of Anna's clothes were still packed in the duffel bag, so she only had to gather a few things. She changed into a dress and a knit cardigan.

There was a knock on the door before it opened. Anna spun around to see Alice walking in. She had a jacket thrown over her arm. Her dark curls were held back by a bright yellow headband.

"I have a present for you," Alice said.

Her lips grew into a big smile. She held the jacket out. Anna looked puzzled as she grabbed the leather jacket. She held it out and inspected it.

"I bought it for you when I got that dress," she said. "You're a vampire. You need to look like a bad-ass, not like a librarian."

Anna looked down at her outfit. It was something she typically wore to class. She could hear Jess' voice in her head calling her a grandmother.

"Thank you," Anna said. "You didn't have to."

"Of course not," Alice said. "But, I'm going to kind of miss you, Stretch."

"You're not coming with us?"

Alice shook her head.

"Rhys has plans for the Yukon," she said, "and I'm not a fan of the cold."

"Where are you going to go?" Anna asked.

"I'm meeting some other vampires in Niagara Falls."

Anna slightly chuckled and raised an eyebrow.

"What's in Niagara Falls?" Anna asked. "Except corny tourist traps."

"A group of vampires is banding together," she said. "We want to fight back against these vampire hunters. I'm sick and tired of always being on the run. The Nightingale family has made my life hell."

Anna's mouth went dry. She leaned down and stuffed the leather jacket into the bag. She picked the bag up and threw the strap over her shoulder. Hearing her last name twice in five minutes made her heart pound in her chest.

"I wish you the best of luck," Anna said.

"Don't need it," Alice said. "If enough of us get together, we'll win."

"You sound pretty confident."

"Once you've been around for a few hundred years you'll gain some confidence too."

Anna nodded. They walked out of the room and down the stairs. Anna set her bag down next to the front door, and they followed the sound of voices. They made their way into the kitchen where the boys were.

Huxley was sitting on the stool at the kitchen island. His head was buried in his hands.

"Where's your bag, Anna?" Rhys asked.

"By the front door," she said.

"Let's get the car packed," he said. "Drew, come with me."

Drew was leaning against the counter and stood up straight. He followed behind Rhys and out of the kitchen. Calvin reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter.

"I'm having a smoke," Calvin said. "Rhys is brutal for not making pit stops."

He went out the large sliding door to the backyard. She watched as Calvin lit up a cigarette as he stood on the porch. She looked over to see Alice rocking back and forth on her feet.

"I'm going to see if I can get one off of him," she said. "I'm hoping to get to Ontario in three days. I won't have time to stop."

"Why don't you fly there?" Anna asked.

"How is the dead supposed to get a government-issued I.D.?"

Anna nodded and felt embarrassed for asking such a dumb question. Alice stepped outside. Anna watched as Calvin handed Alice a cigarette and then lit it for her.

Anna put her hand on Huxley's back. He raised his head from his hands. He ran his fingers through his blond hair.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"I'm such an idiot," he said. "I should have known she was a vampire hunter."

"How are you supposed to know that?"

Huxley pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Did you know that she was? She's your brother's friend."

Anna took a quick look around the kitchen. They were alone. Calvin and Alice could not hear them. Huxley was someone that she felt she would be able to trust. She knew telling him the truth would be risky, but she had to tell someone. She knew that it was going to come up sooner or later.

"I knew," Anna said.

Huxley's eyes grew wide. Anna bit down on her lip.

"How?" he asked. "Did she tell you?"

"No," Anna said. She dropped her voice so low that it was barely above a whisper. "I'm a Nightingale."

Huxley's jaw dropped. Anna felt the heat rush up to her face. Huxley's face was frozen in shock. Anna reached out, put her hand under his chin, and lifted her hand to close his mouth.

"Does Rhys know?" he asked.

"No," she said. "And he can't know. No one can know. I don't know what they'll do to me if they found out."

"He'll rip your head off," he said. "And that is the worst way to go. You stay conscious for hours after."

A horrible image of Rhys tearing off Anna's head filled her mind. She closed her eyes and covered her face with her hands. She tried to push the thought out of her head.

"Hey," Huxley said. He reached out and put his hand on Anna's shoulder. She slid her hands down her face so that they were covering her mouth and chin. Huxley smiled at her. "I promise that I won't say anything."

"Thank you," she said.

A door slammed shut and someone walk across the house. Huxley took his hand off of her shoulder. Rhys walked into the kitchen.

"Where's Alice and Calvin?" he asked.

"Outside getting cancer," Huxley said.

"Go get them," he said. "We need to leave."

Huxley nodded and slid off of the stool. He opened the door and stepped outside.

"Where are we going?" Anna asked.

"There's a village outside of Whitehorse," he said. "I know we can take refuge there for a few a week or so before we find somewhere new."

"Are there vampires there?" Anna asked.

"Werewolves."

Anna furrowed her eyebrows. Vampires seemed mythical, but Anna had spent her entire childhood learning about them. Werewolves were something she only ever read about in books and saw in movies. Her grandmother never mentioned them.

"Why do you look so surprised?" Rhys said.

"I didn't know they existed," she said.

"There's a lot of things that exist in this world."

The porch door slid open and Huxley walked into the house. Alice and Calvin followed behind.

"We need to leave now," Rhys told them.

"Let's go," Calvin said.

He grabbed his jacket off the back of one of the dining room tables and slipped it on. He walked out of the kitchen and Huxley followed him. Alice shoved her hands in the pockets of her jacket and smiled.

"I better get going, kids," she said. "I have to drive across the country and it is going to suck."

"Have a good trip," Anna said.

Alice nodded before stepping around them and heading toward the door. Anna forced herself to step forward. Rhys put his hand on the small of her back and guided her forward. Anna did not feel the need to push him off her like she normally does when a man touches her.

The morning sun was rising beyond the trees. Alice was climbing into the driver's seat of a sleek black car. Drew was behind the wheel of one of the cars and Calvin was in the passenger's seat. Huxley was standing outside of another car.

Rhys pulled his keys out of his pocket and the lights lit up on the car. Huxley opened the passenger seat door.

"Backseat, Hux," Rhys said.

"What?" he said. "I lost shotgun privileges?"

"Apparently so."

Huxley rolled his eyes and sat in the backseat. The stones crunched under Anna's shoes as she walked toward the car. Rhys's hand stayed on her back until she went to get into the car. Rhys climbed into the driver's seat.

The cars pulled out of the driveway. Huxley reached forward with his long arm between the two front seats. He fiddled with the radio until he settled on a station. It was a cheesy pop station stuck with songs from the 90s. Rhys swatted his hand away from the radio.

"You may have taken away my front-seat privileges," Huxley said. "But you will not take away my radio rights."

"Yes I will," Rhys said. He switched the radio to a classic rock station. "I'm not listening to that crap for thirty hours."

"Thirty hours?" Anna asked. "We're going to be on the road for thirty hours?"

"The Yukon is pretty far, sweetheart," Rhys said. "We'll stop tonight and spend the night at a motel."

"We better find a nice place," Huxley said. "Something with a swimming pool. A water slide would be a bonus."

Rhys rolled his eyes. Anna covered her mouth to hide her laugh.

"You'll get what you get," Rhys said.
