The thin line between darkness and light was never straight, it was in constant state of flux. And the dark magic in the doppelganger it brew like the storm that carries the spiral right in the core of it. Elena felt it yell and scream like I demon possessed  wanting to get out of its trap. It burnt, it quivered, it itched, made her wanna selfcombust. 

Flashback

As Sophie got out of the cafe and was about to dial Genevieve, an incoming call came through-

"Elena? Where are you?"- Sophie said.

"Something is happening to me"- Elena said-"I feel like"- the doppelganger gasped-"I'm going to burn away- like have this fever-"

"It's the magic"- Sophie said-"ok- where are you?"

"Just got to the airport. I am outside."- Elena said.

"This is what you will do"- Sophie said and now told Elena to go get the following tea infusion-"sage, peppermint, lemon balm and basil. Drink this. It will ease it a bit. The best would be vervain tea."

"What if they don't have it?"

"At least sage and mint tea. Let it brew strong. Another thing- close your eyes think of the one happy thing- a mental picture- which makes you calm. When you feel like it is happening again- focus on it and it will balance it out.This is mind over matter."

"Huh... ok."- Elena said now feeling a strange burning flush come over her and she felt like all her emotion started to be jumbled up and then the cold in her heart.

"Elena? Are you ok?"- Sophie said-"I will see you in a day or two."

"Fine"- Elena said coolly hanging up.

She closed her eyes. Her mind now searched a picture that made her feel good and calm.

In New York a few moments after Elena slipped in the taxi for airport

Rose pulled up in front of the Ritz as Elijah got in.

"How did you not notice that she left the penthouse?"- Elijah said with a somber menacing voice to his confidante.

Rose looked at him not being able to give him a plausible  answer.

"She musy have heard the news about the destroyed witches' hearts"- the vampire said.

"Even so"- Elijah said-"that is no reason to leave and not answer the phone"- he sifted dialling Freya's number again.

No answer. Everything was shifting and sliding out of his control. First his heart and soul and then, his mind. He worried immensely about his vulnerable sister, but at the same time about Elena, whose loving kisses and caresses still lingered so fervently in him.

"To Salem"- Elijah said to Rose, and the vampire stepped on the gas pedal, not asking why.

At the same time two witches had just left New York heading to Massachussets as well.

"Elena is not answering my calls. Neither is Caroline."- Bonnie said.

"Don't worry. They will be fine"- Sophie said.

"Why does it make Elena go so nuts?"- Bonnie now asked the witch.

"It's because of the  mystical blood in her."- Sophie answered.

"We shouldn't have done it."- Bonnie said worried.

"And leave her helpless and eventually dead- it was not an option. Elena will manage. Her character is strong. We now have to concentrate on finding if there is any truth about the Smallwoods and if the witch had any ancestry before Elijah Mikaelson does."

"He will be so pissed off about those hearts destroyed"- Bonnie said referring to Elijah.

"Yes. He will have much bigger worries, same as we."- Sophie said.

At the JFK Airport Elena now texted Bonnie-

"Boarding plane."

"There"- Sophie said as Bonnie relayed the message-"I told you. Elena will be fine. Caroline being a Clairemont will also be just fine."

"I really hope so"- Bonnie muttered.
Then her phone buzzed and it was Damon.

In Mystic Falls

Caroline used her enhanced wolf instincts and concentrating on Tyler's scent led her to the caves deep in the woods, where she was intercepted by Klaus.

"So, we meet again"- the hybrid said smirking at the blond wolf .

"I knew you are behind this"- Caroline shot out making a sudden little growl induced by her rising emotions.

"So beautiful and so feisty. Remarkable. A true Clairemont."- Klaus said.

"Can we drop the twisted - pick-up line that you are doing right now Nik or can I call you Niklaus?! Where are Richard and Tyler Lockwood?"

"Klaus actually"- the hybrid admitted-"I see your witches have given you all the facts or was it my brother? How is he, by the way?"- Klaus went on charmingly smirking at her.

"Like you don't know"- Caroline said and her eyes now showed the amber glow as her rage started to pick up.

Klaus swished over to her pushing her to the tree- "And so even if I do know, you think you could do his bidding for him and get your sweetheart out of the mess he got himself in?"

Him pushing her neck now made her pulse rise out of proportions and she transformed biting him by the neck. It was something Klaus didn't anticipate, as he didn't have the knowledge of what the magic Bonnie had imposed on Caroline would do to the wolf. She herself was surprised as she pulled off of the hybrid.

Elena finally made it to the small town Jenna went to hide away. The tea infusion helped Elena somewhat, and the mental imagery kept her focus for a little while, but she was fighting hard to keep it together as the dark magic was consuming her heart bit by bit.

"Think of something good"-she heard her mother's voice. And then she looked at the passengers seat and Miranda was there.

"How are you here?... Mom?"- Elena stopped the car  and as she looked again at the passenger she didn't see her mother anymore but herself, but it was not her. It was a woman with long curly hair looking exactly like her smiling at Elena in a smug way saying-
"You thought you could outdo us all? Be better? Not be a killer? I've got news for you- you will be even worse. And you think Elijah will save you? Please, he is just like the rest of them. They just have their own agenda. He will trade you for whatever he needs in a flash. The witch was right. You can't fall in love with him"

"STOP!"- Elena shouted now burying her face in her hands. She looked up again and at the passenger seat. There was no one there.

"Huh-"- Elena exhaled and then muttered starting the car-"this was just a hallucination. I can do this."- once again she took a deep breath and focused on the road  speeding up a bit to get to the place Jenna was staying at.

In Salem, MA

Sophie and Bonnie arrived at the house of the Smallwood witch, who let them in reluctantly.

Sophie didn't beat around the bush and said straight out-
"I need you to get help me annul the source of magic"

"I am not doing magic anymore"- the witch replied.

Sophie understood why someone would give up and she respected it, but with the biv threat looming she broke the promise she made to herself not to insist or push a fellow witch to return to the supernatural mayhem and said-

"They have resurrected Maximo Salvatore. They will resurrect Arlo Smallwood. Niklaus Mikaelson is about to trigger his witch aspect. Shall I say anything more?"

Ella Smallwood knew the curse of the family and its dark history, as well as what would happen if Klaus Mikaelson triggers his witch side. She was quiet for a moment looking at Bonnie and then said.

"You are a Bennett?!"

"I am"- Bonnie said-"how did you- know I didn't introduce myself"

"I don't do magic, but I still feel it. Plus, you look a lot like your great- great grandmother"- Ella now said.

'My- great great grandmother?"- Bonnie said.

"Yes."- Ella said and turned around pulling a book from the shelf finding a picture of Martha Bennett"

Bonnie looked at it wide-eyed. There was so much she didn't know about her family. 

"Can I?"- Bonnie asked to read the book.

Ella gave her the book, and then said to both of them-

"I see that I am not get out of it. How about I make us a drink? This is going to be a long night, right?"

"It is."- Sophie said and sat down.

And she was very right. The night for all of them was going to be a long murky one. 

Elijah and Rose arrived in Salem and found Freya at the cemetery. She was sitting at a grave of Mari Mikaelson, but it was written in runic alphabet.

 "Freya"- Elijah said nearing his sister.

"No. Don't come close. No."- Freya said-"I am not going anywhere"

"Darling"- Elijah now knelt down next to his sister-"we have to go. It is not safe here."

Freya now looked at her brother and he could see that she was out of it and tried to convince her to go with him- 

"I see her all the time"- Freya said-"it's like she is calling me. And she saved me then, remember? All that blood. Dahlia took her heart, did you know this? It's because of me. I have blood on my hands."

"Freya, look at me"- Elijah now gently put his hands on his sister's cheeks turning her head to face him. Freya raised her teary eyes at him- "and it is all gone now. Niklaus destroyed the hearts"

"I know. But this is not over. Not yet. We will look for another way. There is always another way."

"You can't take back what has been done. Things cannot be undone."- Freya now looked at her brother her face changing into an angry one. She stood up and looked at her twin's grave.

"Things cannot be undone."- she thought-"Soon we'll be together". She agreed to leave, and as they proceeded to the car, and seeing her brother relax for a second, she  produced a pin from her hair running it through neck. 

"Noooooooo"- Elijah screamed as he smelled the blood running. Within seconds he tried to help her by feeding her his blood, but it was not to be. The hair pin had poison and Elijah's healing properties did not work.

"Why Freya? Why?"-Elijah held his sister's lifeless body in his arms crying.

Rose stood not far like a stone statue. She could not believe that the witch gave up on the fight. Why- she wondered as well.

Elijah then got up and carried her to Mari's grave. The sudden decision he made to bury her there and then seemed to have been made like in a trance. He laid her body down in the hole. He stood for a moment looking at her his heart filling with horrific darkness. He kissed her on the forehead and slipped-"Always and forever" then covering the hole with soil neatly arranging it with flowers from a neighbouring bushes.
He sat down for a second bowing down like he needed to  rest or make sense of what had happened.

In the small town somewhere in North America, Elena hugged her aunt like she had not seen her in a very long time.

"Oh, it is so good seeing you"- Jenna squeezed Elena warmly-"you look the same, but - there is something different about you."

"There is a lot different about me"- Elena said gulping a little-"can you make this tea - here"- Elena now produced  four different packets of tea she had bought in the airport shop-"mix it all together and I will tell you why I have to drink it, but first, I really need a shower."

"Yeah, ok"- Jenna took the packages directing her niece to the bathroom up the stairs. 

Elena could not wait to get under the water hoping it relaxing effect would help her, but it was not helping. The hallucinations took over. She now saw blood running mixed water from the shower- Elena crouched down holding her head desperately trying to block the halucination coming on-
