Chapter 7
"Sehun, why won't you tell me who my real parents are?" Now eleven year old Luhan asks me.
"I'm your real parent, what do you mean real parents?" I ask, wanting to avoid the question for longer but it's becoming harder to now that he's older.
"Sehun! You know what I mean!" He huffs as he glares at me.
"Luhan, I just, you're not old enough to know yet-"
"Why not? I'm in sixth grade! I'm a big kid now! I'm the biggest kid on campus before going to Jr. High, then high school!" He complains as I sigh and lean against the counter across from him.
"Lu-"
"No! You never tell me anything! All my friends always brag about how their moms make them breakfast, and dads play baseball with them, then they ask me about mine and... and I don't know what to say! You say you're not my dad, but you tell me to tell friends that you are! What about my mom? Do I just say I don't have one?" He says angrily before getting up.
"Luhan, wait."
"No! I'm tired of you always, always ignoring me! I'm not a kid anymore! Just leave me alone!" He yells before storming off while I stand here puzzled.
...
"Knock knock, Lu, can I come in?" I ask as I knock on his bedroom door then open it.
"Go away!" He huffs as he lays on his bed with his back to me.
"That wasn't the answer I was hoping for." I sigh, hoping to make him laugh.
Nothing.
"I have some chocolate milk for you, baby." I say as I go in and set it on his night stand before sitting on his bed next to him.
"So I have a story for you-"
"I don't care-"
"I don't care if you care or not I'm telling it." I interrupt like he did to me.
"Now, there once was a man, and he was a lonely, old, no, very old, old man. He had nothing. Nothing but a house and himself. Like me, this man was able to fly, and one day he was flying through the forest to go to the store for some dinner. But something stopped him. It was the sound of something crying, something young. So the man went to the ground to find this dirty, smelly little potato laying on its back in the forest, unable to get up." I say and hear him snicker softly.
"The man looked around and saw nothing, and this little, dirty baby was just out there-"
"I thought it was a potato?" He interrupts again.
"I thought you didn't care?" I say which shuts him right up.
"So the man picked up the little potato and found it was really squishy and although he didn't want to admit it at the time, it was cute. It's arms were forced up and all its chub just went up and it just stared at him. Then it stuck its arms out to the man, like it was asking for a hug." I explain, remembering it like it was yesterday.
"Now the baby had snot all over his face from crying, so the man told it strictly not to get it on his jacket because the man loved that jacket. So he rested the baby on his hip and what does it do? Use the man's jacket as a tissue. The man sighed and pulled the baby off him and it wiggled and... almost fell but the man caught it. This time he rested the baby against his ribs and used his free hand to pick a few leaves out of its hair. He looked at it for a minute and it just, rested its head on his shoulder which gave him a weird, warm feeling inside." I explain, Luhan now on his back looking at me.
"He said to the baby, "two days, okay? That's all." Saying he'd keep it for two days then bring it back to find it's parents." I say before pausing slightly.
"He took it home and conveniently he was wearing a diaper which the man had to change. It was gross too, not a little cute poop or anything like, it was a mess. So after throwing up a few times," I say joking with a gag before Luhan hits my leg as a, knock it off and continue. "The man cleaned the baby and dried it off. The man didn't have any diapers so instead he used one of his old shirts, expecting it to work the same. But it didn't, and it was a terrible idea. Anyway, the man got proper baby care, for the most part, and took care of it for two days. The baby was so cute, and so sweet, the man knew at that point, that this baby had his heart. But like he had said, he took the baby back two days later to the exact same spot where he found him. There was caution tape, torn clothes, and a big, fat mountain lion foot print placed in the exact spot he found the baby. The man knew the baby would have been killed if he got there only a few minutes later than he did, and he also knew police weren't far behind. He thought, "maybe I should give the baby to the police? They'd know what to do with it." He had been carrying the baby in his jacket to keep it warm while he flew, and looked down at it. He was sucking on his thumb, sleeping against the man's chest for protection, and the man knew, he knew he couldn't give that baby away. It was his now, and he knew he'd do anything to keep it safe." I explain as I look up at him.
"I'm sorry, Luhan. But your real parents, they protected you from the animal and fought so hard to protect you."
"But they didn't survive?" He asks, knowing the story was about us.
"No, and if they would have, I would have given you to them. But being adopted, or put in foster care isn't a life I wanted you to have. I knew I could do better than that. I wanted to do better than that, and I miss having my baby Luhan around in diapers." I say as I feel my throat lock up slightly. "Honey, I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I just figured that when you were old enough to find out, you wouldn't be my little baby anymore. And you're right, you aren't a baby anymore, you're growing up so fast." I sigh as he sits up.
"Hyung, don't cry-"
"Are you kidding me, I don't cry." I say proudly before he rolls his eyes and hugs me.
"I'm sorry for being mean to you earlier." He says before I kiss the top of his head.
"It's okay, you didn't know." I answer while running my fingers through his soft hair.
"Now why don't you come finish your homework while I make you dinner?" I ask as he nods.
"Hyung, why don't I ever see you eat either?" He asks.
"A strong man like me doesn't eat food for energy! I work out and get buff instead!" I say as I flex my arms before hearing him laugh at me.
"What?!" I fake whine as he looks away and shrugs.
"Nothing, nothing." He says and walks past me to the counter, luckily I've avoided another question that I'll save until he's old enough to understand it.
