Chapter 6

Jenny

As soon as I left the room, Max slammed the door behind me. I wheeled around angrily.
Just because he was my big brother, he sometimes imagined he had more say than I did. Except that I was the older one of us.
And aside from the fact that we were in the country and there wasn't much in the way of paperwork here, I didn't even know why I let him kick me out. In a bad mood, I walked to my room and saw a stack of paper on my desk.
However, it was not something I had brought with me.
When father had told us both that we were going to our old country home for a while, I hadn't assumed that my workplace was moving with me.
I quickly looked at the papers and realized that, thank God, I only had to assign them to departments with appropriate instructions.
And I could still do that later. I dropped into the chair and thought for a moment. I felt bad about what had happened to Widow and I had to make sure he didn't hold it against us. That meant we had to make it up to him somehow.
I strongly doubted that his immunity to sunlight was enough. In principle, that only excused the pain, not our inappropriate behavior.
I had to talk to my father about that, too.
Hadn't Max said that he wanted to talk to me anyway?
With a sigh, I got up and went out into the hallway. I couldn't tell where he was, so I set out to find him. As I turned a corner, however, I then crashed into him.
"Hey, I was looking for you, we need to talk for a minute."
"Is it about the paperwork?" he asked, straightening his tie, which must have slipped when we bumped into each other.
"More like we need to figure out something to make up for our misbehavior," I said, raising my eyebrows reproachfully. I wasn't going to make a secret of the fact that I hadn't thought it was the right way he had handled this whole situation. He eyed me and I saw him grit his teeth, but he nodded.
"I know, I'll think of something."
"I already have an idea. I could go to town with him. We haven't packed much, we need to have some groceries and some new clothes too.
I'm assuming he'd like to wear something other than the long-sleeved clothes now, too."
"He shouldn't overdo it with the sun yet, we don't know how his skin will react if he's in daylight again for a longer time now. Don't forget he's probably been out only at night for a couple of decades."
I nodded seriously.
"So we should also get some sunscreen then, just to be on the safe side."
The corners of his mouth twitched up slightly.
"Right, better safe than sorry.", He thought for a moment and turned his gaze to a spot on the ceiling behind me.
"I'll think about it Jenny, if then you shouldn't go alone."
"Dad, we're at our vacation home, far away from the company, no one will say anything."
He shook his head. "That's not the problem.
The issue is that he's still a vampire."
"I get it, all vampires are out to directly kill any human they come across. I guessed it, so he tried to slit my wrists when he couldn't even really move earlier," I said sarcastically, turning my back on him in a huff.
"Jennifer, don't underestimate this species. I'm not saying they can be diplomatic either, but they are..."
"...Basically animals who are usually ruled by their instincts, yes I know, you've drilled it into us often enough," I snorted and left. This conversation had not gone the way I had planned. But talking to my father about vampires was like trying to explain to a 90-year-old how a computer worked. It just didn't make sense. Maybe Widow managed to convince even my stubborn father. However, that possibility was very slim. More likely the world would end in the next three days.
I went to the kitchen, grabbed an apple and sat out on the swing that was in the garden in front of the edge of the forest.
I could see the window of Widow's room from here, albeit at a rather acute angle.
Still, I could observe him standing at the window in the sun with his gaze fixed on the forest.
Without any question, he was really damn good looking and his body was too....
I paused even during this thought. I wasn't even allowed to think in that direction. Not in a thousand years. While I was convinced that he was unquestionably a very smart vampire, at this point I had to agree with my father. He still was a vampire, a completely different species that usually used humans as prey. All these hollywood-dramas usually guaranteed a happy ending. Twilight and all those books certainly made some people dream of getting a vampire, but those stories were far from reality.
Actually I should hate vampires. A group of them had murdered my mother. But I couldn't blame the whole species for that, it had been only a small group. And they had gotten their receipt. The only person to blame was my father. He had been too careless, especially as a vampire hunter. And we then saw what one got out of it.
All of us. Him, Max and me.
After that he had changed his profession to be able to protect his family, that is us, better.
But working as an agent wasn't the real thing either. Again I looked at Widow and when I saw him standing in the sunlight with his eyes closed, enjoying it deeply, I found it hard to believe that he too was one of those bloodthirsty monsters.

Widow

After this Duman had left, I had dropped back on the bed and tried to loosen my cramped muscles a bit with some stretching exercises.
And after that I was bored. No doctor had come to sedate me again. Either Jennifer had forgotten about it, or they didn't think it was necessary.
Anyway: I had nothing to do, couldn't do much either and only in thin pants I didn't want to snoop around in the other rooms, although my fingers were itching to find out where exactly I was. I had forgotten to ask one of them about it and now I could only guess... Though I believe, that they wouldn't even tell me, even if I'd ask.
In one corner of the room there was a desk with a computer that I hadn't paid any attention to yet. It looked dusty and quite old.
I shakily got up again and tried to turn it on, not really expecting it to be plugged in. Then, when the beeping of the computer was heard, I looked around. Hopefully someone wouldn't necessarily come in to check on me right now.
However, they should expect exactly this, if they already put me in a room with a PC.
The lock screen told me that it was running Windows 7 and I clicked my tongue while wondering what the password might be.
I didn't feel like hacking the PC, that would take too long now, besides it was too exhausting for me right now to concentrate. After trying obvious password possibilities, I decided to look around the hallway for pictures. Maybe I would have a little luck and somewhere on the back of a photo there would be a name I could try. I opened the door cautiously and peeked out, trying to look calm and with the excuse that I was hungry in case someone was standing there. And that wasn't even a lie...
But the hallway was empty, as were the walls.
With a frown, I stepped all the way out and let my gaze glide over the bare walls.
What kind of place was this supposed to be?
The last time I had seen anything so impersonal was in my own apartment, except that, unlike this snorring Duman-ass, I had no family and no life to document through photographs.
"Filth.", I grumbled and went back into the room, since there was also only one other door in the hallway, which, I discovered, was also locked. I searched the desk drawers, looked under the bed and in the closet, but everything was empty and dusty.
I should have guessed.
True, there was a computer, but everything was set up so sterilely that I couldn't guess the password.
With an annoyed sigh, I then turned the PC off again and just stood in the room for a moment, too tired to think clearly.
I still had to let my employer know about the circumstances of the job, so that he could take care of all the formalities.
And then I had to figure out how I was going to make ends meet for the next few months when the pay for the last job went away. And I had to gather general information about the situation I was in right now. My eyes hurt and my head began to throb again. With a growl I rubbed my eyelids and headed for the bed again.
Yes, I had all these things to do in the next few days, but for now I just needed to rest.
In this condition, I wouldn't even be able to defend myself.
As soon as I lay on the mattress my eyes fell shut and I was asleep. I hadn't even managed to get myself under the covers properly, but that wasn't a problem, because I noticed even in my sleep that I still had cramps from all the shit and was sweating quite a bit. I didn't even noticed that I really was fallen asleep, until someone shook me awake by the shoulder. I jolted up from some indefinable nightmare and hit my head on something hard, which jerked back with a painful squeak. I grumbled a curse an held my forehead.
"Get up. We're going to town.", Jennifer said sullenly, rubbing her forehead, with an unhappy expression on her face, too, "There's clothes there, they should fit you. Get ready and then come out.", she turned and left the room.
At the end of my bed were a pair of dark blue jeans, a white top and a black cardigan.
Along with that, at the end of the bed were my black shoes.
I frowned and looked at the clothes. They had Max's smell about them and I wrinkled my nose as I put the stuff on. Wouldn't have been my first choice, and not really my style. I'd prefer a good suit, or a nice shirt.
I glanced at the window. Again the sun was shining. Suddenly, I was a little unsettled.
After all, I didn't know how my body would behave if I stood in the sunlight for too long, despite the genetic manipulations.
I walked over, pulled the curtains open a crack, and held my hand in the light.
Again, I felt the soft, soothing tingling sensation that I had felt yesterday as well. I really enjoyed it. Then I gave myself a jolt.
If we were going to town, I could get a clue about my location and maybe there was an opportunity to reach my employer through a payphone.
I left the room and made my way to the entrance hall. As I did so, I looked closely at the house and the various paths to find potential escape routes. But there were no back exits or fire escapes.
The hallway led to the main staircase, then into the entryway and to the front door.
I reached the front door, but left my hand on the knob and hesitated briefly before finally opening it.
Instantly the sun was shining towards me and I had to raise a hand to avoid being completely blinded. Because I usually only wore sunglasses and a hat during the day, the light seemed much brighter than it probably was. After a short time to get used to it, I realized that Jennifer was waiting annoyed at the car. I eyed her for a moment, wondering what had happened to make her so pissed off.
"Are you going to get going again today?!" she asked with a somber look. I frowned and squinted my eyes skeptically.
"It's okay, don't shit yourself," I grumbled and headed down the stairs. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious why she was in such a bad mood, because I was. But just as I was about to inquire, she pushed off from the car and grumbled, "I'll drive."
I got in without a word and thought about how I would best learn something without it seeming suspicious. However, any questions I asked would probably seem suspicious.
"Will someone slowly tell me about this important mission you want me to help you with?", I asked after she had driven off and left the compound.
"My father will do that later," she said coldly.
"Then may I at least know what backwater town you've dragged me to here?"
"That, too, my father will tell you later."
"Ah, so trepidatious silence. At least turn on the radio so I won't have to listen to your angry breathing," I said, looking out the window.
She mumbled something and turned on the radio.
We were just before a small town, I never heard of before, when she started to say something, but she paused again and continued to be silent.
"What's on the shopping list?", I asked bored after she had started for the thtlird time and said nothing.
"Some clothes for you and groceries. And we're going to pick up some more-"
"WATCH OUT!", I interrupted her as I noticed at the last moment a car speeding towards us from the right just as we were going through an intersection. But she didn't manage to brake in time and it crashed into the side of our car at full throttle.
