Chapter 7: Foraged in Flames

The sun was setting when Asbrand worked up the courage. He had been itchy to speak with Kara for a while, he had heard the Valkyrie and his father were close friends growing up.

He slowly exited the Community Den, looking out towards the tree the Valkyries had been staying in and keep watch. The calico pelt of Kara could be seen through the heavy white blankets of snow. No one else was in sight, a small relief washing over him.

He didn't want the other Valkyries to be upset he hadn't asking them about Loki. He knew they would have been happy to tell them about his father, but something told him to wait and ask Kara.

The Valkyrie turned as she heard the snow crunch from under the tree. Her gaze fell on the Godling, before she smiled.

"Good evening, Asbrand, how are you today?" Kara asked. The tom's tail waved back in a greetings.

"Hi, Miss Kara. I was just wanting to see, if it's okay with you, if we talked... for a second, about Loki." Asbrand saw the Valkyrie stay still for a moment, before nodding, motioning for the young tom to join her on the branch.

Asbrand quickly nodded, before hooking his claws into the tree and climbing up, Kara moving over to make room for him. Up in the tree, Asbrand could see why they chose this tree, as he was able to gaze as far as to the lake and all of trees surrounding the camp.

Kara's tail flicked from under the branch, her wings huddled by her side to keep her warm. "So, what would you like to know?" She asked, her eyes meeting the other's.

Asbrand suddenly felt his mouth dry. He had been waiting this long to talk to her, and now it felt like everything he wanted to ask escaped him. He wasn't sure where to begin, what was Loki like, what was it like is Asgard before it was destroyed, why Loki was so distant...

Kara gave a small chuckle. "Don't know where to start, huh? That's okay, just take your time."

The tom looked to her, meeting her gaze. He took a breath, calming down his racing heartbeat. Why was he so nervous?

"Could you tell me what he was like? What he liked to do, or anything like that?"

Kara nodded, a soft smile on her face. "Of course. Your dad was a troublemaker, a full time prankster who loved to get Thor and everyone all stirred up just for fun." She gave a small chuckle, and Asbrand couldn't help but smile a bit. He should have expected that much from the God of Trickery.

"But, at the end of the day, he just wanted to make some cats happy. He was a good friend, and he was a good listener. He would listen to me rant about Gunnr and Eir, and he'd gave pretty good advise. A lot of cats never liked to be around him, everyone called him a jerk, but he was only sometimes."

"Why did you and him become friends then? If not a lot of others liked him?"

Kara stayed silent for a moment, before she shook her head. "Because he was the first one who actually wanted to be my friend... no one really wanted to be a friend of a Valkyrie, as much as some cats think highly of us, it wasn't all the easy in Asgard as it is here. Being in Asgard, we were always constantly training, being set out to other realms, or helping guide souls. We didn't really have time to make friendships except with other Valkyries."

Kara smiled sadly. "I would sneak away to hang out with him, I'm lucky Freya understood why," The Valkyrie have a small amused laugh, "she thought of training him as well just so I kept up my training. He wasn't that good of a student."

Asbrand joined in with her with a small laugh of his own. The two calmed down, before looking back out to the frozen lake. It was so pretty to see the sun setting behind the mountains, the sunlight bouncing off of the ice and shining the last few rays of sunshine until the morning.

The tom looked back over to the Valkyrie, his eyes rounding slightly in slightly worry.

"Why was Loki so distant with me and my mom? He sounded like a good cat... what happened to him?"

Kara's ears dropped. "Angrboda. She was your dad's first mate, and he loved her deeply. She died after giving birth to the three... your half siblings. Then, before he could grieve over her, Odin threw the three away... Hel was exiled to Helhiem, Fenrir went missing, and Jörmungandr was tossed into sea. It destroyed him. Destroyed me too, I raised them while Loki locked himself away. I'll never forget Hel's face when guards escorted her away."

The Godling carefully came closer to the Valkyrie, placing his tail on her back as a sign of comfort. "What... what were they like?"

Kara didn't answer, and for a moment, Asbrand thought she hadn't heard him.

"They were good kits. They didn't deserve what happened to them. Fenrir was a loving and giant goofball, Hel was a quiet and shy kitten, and Jörmungandr was always sad about how others avoided and ran away from him. I wanted have helped them but... I couldn't..."

"You did though... didn't you? You helped raise them, and because of that, you probably made it easier on them,"

"Yes, but... I should have stopped Odin from hurting them... after they were gone, I felt... little empty. I focused on trying to help Loki soon after what happened, to try and forget the hurt."

Asbrand nodded slightly, seeing the sadness in Kara's eyes. "I'm glad you two had each other during all of that. I wish I got to spend more time with him. Thank you for telling me all of this, Kara."

The Valkyrie looked over, her eyes cloudy and rounded with sadness. "Your dad was an amazing cat, Asbrand, and even though he didn't spend a lot of time with you, I'm sure he was proud of you, even know is Valhalla I'm sure he's still proud to have you as a son. He wanted a family that would he could love, and even if he wasn't active in your life, you were very much an active part of his."

Asbrand leaned in, nuzzling his head into the molly's neck fur, as black wings wrapped out him as Kara hugged him back.

The full moon's light shinied down, bouncing on the snow in a beautiful show of nature. Star twinkling in the vast black sky, no clouds in sight. For a moment, Asbrand felt a shiver, and eyes watching him. He opened his eyes, looking past Kara, seeing a faint outline of a cat on the farthest end of the branch. A gently smile came from the ghost, before dipping his head slowly. Asbrand gave a small smile, before hugging Kara even tighter.

A loud booming voice was heard announcing Fimbulwinter has arrived. A discussion chain will be place for everyone to discuss what this means and what to do.

A strange bright beam of light is coming from across the valley. Yrsa, Argent, and Valor have been chosen to go and investigate.

Kara is back in Camp with a Dwarf by the name of Flint. They both have settled in nicely. Flint said to give him a few days to set up his forage and he'll make special equipment for everyone!

Rota is visiting the camp! As a greeting, she has offered to help hunt and gather supplies with others. She will randomly join patrols from time to time to help.

There is now an Activity Chain!

The cold has eased up slightly. Hunting and Foraging will now be easier

Nix has been moved to the Nursery!

Sylvie has reached Level 4 of her PowerSkills!
