Chapter 4

"H-huh?!" Shuichi exclaimed.

"Wow, you're really shy! Those are always the easiest to have fun with... speaking of fun, I have physics soon so see ya!" Charles waved goodbye and left, giggling.

"...So that happened," You awkwardly commented. Shuichi sighed.

"Seems he's pretty... loud," Shuichi chose his words carefully.

"Yeah, I know what you mean," You agreed. Even if his voice wasn't loud, his entire personality was.

"Ah... do you mind if I sit with you? I don't have another class for a while..." Shuichi nervously asked.

"Go ahead, I don't care," You shrugged, going back to doing your chemistry homework.

Shuichi sat down and placed his backpack beside him, taking out a notebook and starting to write in it.

"I'm assuming you also got first day homework?" You prompted.

"Mhm... but it's easy..." Shuichi quietly answered, and silence fell between the two of you as you both worked on your homework quietly. You finished your work in about ten minutes and put it away, checking the time on your phone. You still had a while before you had to go anywhere. You played on your phone lazily until Shuichi eventually finished his work too, putting it away in his backpack.

"So what class do you have next?" You casually asked.

"Let me check..." Shuichi took out a neatly folded physical copy of his schedule from his pocket, "Um... it looks like I have a law study class."

"Wait, really? Me too!" You gasped slightly.

"It makes sense though," Shuichi shrugged, and you nodded in agreement.

"I wonder if the teacher's gonna be like, Judge Judy or something," You joked.

"I could honestly see her being more of a secretary if she had to work at this school..." Shuichi thought aloud.

"Eh?! Why a secretary?" You questioned.

"If you think about it, being a judge for civil cases and being a secretary have overlaps," Shuichi explained. You paused and thought about it for a minute.

"Mmm... I guess I could see it," You sort of agreed. You were about to say something else when you felt a small droplet of water hit your hand, "Eh?"

"What is it?" Shuichi asked.

You pointed to the water droplet that now rested on your hand, "I think it's starting to rain."

Another droplet hit the table, and you looked around and saw that the concrete was starting to turn a darker shade of grey because of rain.

"We should get inside so we don't catch a cold," Shuichi warned, standing up.

"Probably," You agreed, standing up as well and grabbing your backpack, "Man... now I kinda regret not bringing a jacket..."

"Here..." Shuichi opened his backpack and took out a grey hoodie, handing it to you.

"Eh? First of all, I can't take that, second of all, why were you casually carrying a hoodie?" You crossed your arms.

"(Y/N), please accept it... and... you'd be surprised what I carry around..." Shuichi kept the hoodie extended to you, and you sighed as you realized there was no way around it and put on the hoodie.

"When do you want it back?" You asked.

"Whenever it's convenient for you... and when you're not in the cold," Shuichi glared slightly as he said the last part.

"Okay, geez!" You pouted as you both continued walking to the safety of the indoors. Shuichi lead the way inside the criminal justice hall, which was a very interestingly decorated place. While the science hallway had obvious posters and decorations like the solar system that obnoxiously adorned the whole place, this was more subtle.

The 'lobby' of the criminal justice building had the typical statue you'd see outside a courtroom of blind justice, but the hallways didn't have any posters or other decorations. There was just a secretary at a desk in the corner and then a large sitting area for students to do homework. There was a small library probably dedicated to the subject and there were a lot of hallways with large classrooms.

"This place is a lot more impressive than the science hall," You commented.

"Mhm... do you wanna explore?" Shuichi offered.

"Heck yeah, this place is cool! What floor's our class on, by the way?" You asked.

"It was room 4404... so it's on the fourth floor," Shuichi answered.

"Then let's explore that floor, we only have like twenty minutes now," You suggested.

"Okay," Shuichi agreed, and you both made your way to the elevator. You pushed the call button and to your surprise the door opened right up!

"Huh, guess we got lucky," You chuckled as you both walked inside. Shuichi pressed the fourth floor button and the doors slowly closed, and the elevator began to rise. The elevator ride was much smoother than the dorm's elevators and you hardly felt anything despite the ride being short, and the doors opened to reveal the fourth floor.

"That was a really nice elevator..." Shuichi commented as you both stepped into the floor.

"Yeah, I wish the dorms were like that," You agreed, looking around the area.

The floor was made of pristine tile and there was a plant growing between two benches, giving the hallway a more friendly atmosphere. You both started walking down a hallway and saw that the classrooms on this floor were themed like courtrooms, jails, police departments, all sorts of crazy things!

"They really outdid themselves," You thought aloud.

"It is pretty over the top..." Shuichi agreed, "Is it really even college appropriate to have a jail themed classroom...? I don't know if the cells really lock but that's still questionable..."

"I hope they don't lock or I feel like someone's gonna end up getting locked inside at the hand of some bullies," You grimaced at the thought.

"Yeah..." Shuichi sighed.

"How much time do we have...? Oh, ten minutes! We better get to class," You awkwardly giggled.

Shuichi chuckled and you started heading to your classroom, which turned out to be themed like a courtroom. The teacher sat at the judge's table while the podiums for the two parties at court were completely empty. In the area behind the courtroom where witnesses to the trial would sit, desks and chairs were set up very neat and orderly.

"Do you wanna sit together?" You asked.

"Sure, I don't mind..." Shuichi shyly smiled.

"How about over there?" You pointed to an area of open seats near the front.

"Yeah, that looks okay," Shuichi nodded, and you both took your seats next to each other. You both took out a notebook and a pencil, ready to take notes since the college seemed very keen on starting lessons right away.

"I'm kinda nervous," You bit your lip.

"What's wrong?" Shuichi gave you a worried glance.

"I dunno, I just feel like this class might be kinda tough. I dunno why..." You sighed.

"If it does turn out hard I could help you maybe..." Shuichi offered.

"Really?" You smiled at the slightly relieved anxiety.

"Mhm," Shuichi confirmed.

"Thank you!" You couldn't help but grin.

"I-I haven't even done anything!" Shuichi blushed a little.

"Order in the court!" the teacher yelled, silencing the class, "Okay, as you can see this class is based on the courtroom! I'll tell you right now, your final will be to play out a court case with a judge, a jury, lawyers, a defendant, all that stuff. I'll talk about the details when the end of the quarter actually gets here! For now, I'm Mr. Brown and I'm obviously your teacher."

"What do you think of the class?" You asked.

"It seems like it'll be pretty fun," Shuichi commented.

"The teacher seems a little strict but I think it'll be fun too," You agreed, "Oh yeah! What class do you have next?"

"Umm... looks like it's homeroom, and they're sorted by major so we probably have the same homeroom," Shuichi commented as he looked at his schedule which said: 'HOMEROOM: Science and Criminal Justice-based majors.'

"Apparently they don't have that many if it's combined into one homeroom," You thought aloud.

"Maybe. Well, it looks like it's in the science hall. Do you wanna go now? Though we only have about thirty minutes..." Shuichi looked at a clock in the hallway.

"Let's just go now so we get walking through the rain over with," You suggested, looking out the window, "Ah... it looks like it's picking up."

Shuichi didn't say anything as he just followed you out the building, and when you stepped into the rain you expected to get pelted with raindrops only to stay perfectly dry and instead you heard a soft, almost soothing drumming of raindrops hitting fabric above you. Looking up, you saw you were under an umbrella held by Shuichi.

"You're telling me we walked in the rain while you had a freaking umbrella?" You scoffed as you both began to walk.

"S-sorry...!! I only use my umbrella if it's raining badly..." Shuichi explained nervously.

"P-please wait up!" a voice called, and you both turned around to see a boy with navy blue hair like Shuichi's, though it was shorter but kept just as neat. He wore a fancy black suit with a red bowtie. The male bowed politely, "My apologies for bothering you two... but may I please walk under your umbrella?"

"Sure, but where are you going? If you're going the opposite direction it won't help much," Shuichi allowed the boy to get under the umbrella.

"I'm headed to the science hall. Where are you two going?" the boy asked.

"Same place," You commented in a bit of shock.

"How lucky of me! Thank you both for your generosity," the boy genuinely thanked.

"Y-you're welcome..." Shuichi shyly mumbled.

"Hey, what's your name? Just curious," You looked at the mystery boy.

"Ah! My apologies for not introducing myself! I'm Simon Beamte, the Ultimate Lawyer!" the boy smiled politely, "If I may ask... who are you two?"

"I'm (Y/N) (L/N), the Ultimate Forensic Scientist," You introduced.

"And I'm Shuichi Saihara, the Ultimate Detective," Shuichi introduced himself as well.

"Ah! A forensic scientist and a detective! That's so cool!" Simon gushed a little.

"I think a lawyer is a lot cooler. And I expected a lawyer would be all strict and mean but you're so... nice. You're kind of like a gentleman," You giggled.

"Thank you! You're very nice as well," Simon returned the compliment.

You couldn't help but blush slightly, and Shuichi suddenly commented, "Ah... looks like we're here."

Simon walked to the door and held it open for both you and Shuichi, both of you mumbling a thanks to him.

"Okay... now to find our homeroom..." You thought aloud.

"Oh! I have homeroom too! Maybe we have the same homeroom?" Simon wondered.

"It's room 1136... what about you?" Shuichi asked.

"We do have the same homeroom! If you want I can show you two the way there," Simon offered.
