Angelus Filiorum

Adrian's PoV

A large stately house rises in front of us as we turn around onto what feels like the 100th street. I forgot how big London is.

"Here we are!" Kenna announces.

She turns and faces the path of the third house down, which looks completely identical to the first 2. She sets a brave smile on her face, though I can see from the crease on her forehead that she's worried about something.

What's wrong? I think to myself, how long has it been since she's seen this house?

"I think Luke's right....I can't believe it's been 8 months since I've been here," she says, answering my 2 unasked questions.

"How did yo- You were reading my mind weren't you?" I sigh.

"I'm sorry," she replies, sounding sincerely sorry,"sometimes it's just a habit...by the way, your really quite dumb."

"Thanks! Yeah, that's probably due to the fact that, I've spent the last 5 years on the run instead of in school!" I exclaim cheerfully,"Anyway, please remind me of what Luke said before we left."

"'Your dad will not be happy to see the anomaly'" she whispers, looking at me with sad eyes.

Sighing, she lifts her chin up and marches up the path before I can respond. I follow after her up the wide stone path and stop beside her, facing the large grey door. Her long pale hand reaches out and grabs the silver door knocker, tapping it firmly against the door 3 times. A few minutes pass though no sign of life shows from the house. Kenna reluctantly exhales and and walks over to the window on the right side of the door.

She peers in,"Looks like dad's not in. He's probably at a meeting, they normally overrun."

"To five in the morning?" I raise my eyebrows at her.

She grimaces, but doesn't reply as she bends down to move aside a loose paving stone. She stands up with a small gold key in her hand an fits it into the key hole in the door. The door swings open, revealing a dark corridor.

I step inside the house and click on the switch, right where I remembered it to be. Light floods into the hall, which opens out onto the big familiar foyer. It feels good to be home.

I look over my shoulder to see Adrian standing frozen to the spot, his mouth agape. Once again, the vulnerability and cautiousness of his look washes over me and his thoughts slowly come trickling into my head. I give him a wry smile when I see that he's marvelling over how huge and expensive this house must've been. Beckoning him in, I open my mouth, ready to explain my dads job and position, though I stop myself when I realise that he'll probably get mad at me for reading his mind again. I turn back around, carefully releasing his thoughts and clearing my head. The tingling sensation of using my ability clears and I advance into the foyer, Adrian soon follows suit.

"We used to live in a much smaller house," I say, trying to fill the eerie, silent, emptiness of the house,"we moved here when I was eleven,"

Adrian nods in response, his face still adorning the stunned expression.

"Come, I'll show you your room,"

My hand lightly traces the mahogany banister, engraved with scenes from all the battles our kind have had across the many centuries of our existence, as we make our way up the wide staircase in the middle of the foyer.

We reach the top of the stairs and my hand suddenly falls to my side, as the scenes of World War Two come to an abrupt end. Adrian doesn't seem to notice however, as he surveys the glittering chandelier in the centre of the ceiling, his eyes wide with wonder. I chuckle quietly to myself before grabbing his arm and dragging him down the first upstairs corridor.

Doors flash by as Kenna pulls me down the hall, all white and identical and polished to the extreme. As we reach the sixth door down on the left side, we slow to a stop. Kenna reaches the silver door knob, twists it and leans against the door causing it to swing open, revealing an immaculate room.

The walls are all painted a faint turquoise-blue and white panels border it along the bottom. A double bed stands prominently in the centre of the room, the head of it against the wall on my right. A white duvet is spread across it, neatly tucked into the corners and two identical white side tables sit on either side of the bed. A long dressing table accompanied by a tall clear mirror face the bed. Though what catches my attention the most are the long glass doors that grace the wall opposite me, which open out onto a massive balcony.

"You've probably got the best view in the house," Kenna remarks, beside me. She must've seen followed my gaze to the balcony...

Damn it, I read his mind again!

"I'll leave you to get comfortable, I'll bring some clothes for you in a bit. If you need me, carry on through the corridor we came down, then take a right and my rooms the eighth door down on the left side, though you'll probably recognise it pretty easily," Kenna informs me before leaving, clicking the door shut behind her.

I slowly make my way towards the bed, a little intimidated I must admit, by the sheer size of the room...and a balcony? I mean, I'm not complaining, but isn't that just a bit too extra? A shake my head, but I don't know how that helps as my mind remains swimming with questions.

Still hypnotised by the balcony I seem to find myself walking towards the doors, sliding them open and slipping out into the cool morning as if I were in a trance. Looking back into the room, I manage to relocate the clock I'd noticed before, hanging on the wall and see that it is now 5:52. Turning back to the horizon, I watch as the slither of sun that is mostly concealed by trees, splashes hazes of light blue and pink across the sky.

The door into the bedroom opens soundlessly and I watch from the bed as Kenna steps in carrying a huge pile of clothes. A jacket falls off the top of the pile and Kenna trips on it and curses as she only just stops herself along with the clothes from landing face down on the floor. She dumps the pile of clothes on the dressing table then bends down and retrieves the jacket, flinging it on top of the pile.

"They should...fit you," she pants, leaning against the table.

"Seriously? You can fly a helicopter, read minds, walk down a huge mountain-"

"Small hill,"

"Without breaking a sweat, yet a pile of clothes gets you out of breath?"

"Hey, there's a lot of clothes on that pile and thanks to a dodgy design flaw, the corridors upstairs are very long!" She protests.

"Sure," I say sarcastically.

She sticks her tongue and chucks something at me. I look down and see that it's a book.

"Read it," Kenna tells me over her shoulder as she opens the door again,"Careful though. The binding's fragile."

The door slams shut behind her and I return my attention back to the book.
The cover, which is a faded red, bears the words The Angelus filiorum compendium. Puzzled, I look inside and begin to read...

In the beginning
Over 1000 years ago the Angel Nevaeh was created by the four elements. Earth, water, fire and air. The Angel brought all sorts of good into the world and people worshipped her in every city. However, not everyone was pleased with the attention she was getting. Her brother, the Angel Thanatos saw the way people worshipped her far and wide and was jealous, thinking he deserved that kind of praise.
One night, while the Angel Nevaeh was attending a feast at the good kings castle, the Angel Thanatos met with his most loyal and fierce followers. Together the party went to every city the Angel Nevaeh had brought peace to and burnt every last building to the ground. The Angel Nevaeh eventually heard of the terrible crimes her brother had committed and a sudden hatred flared within her. She left the feast and sought out the Angel Thanatos and his followers.
She didn't have trouble finding them, resting and laughing over a blazing fire by a stream. She crept into the shadows and watched the men, the horrid stench of death hovered around them and their armour was coated in blood. Silently the Angel began to chant. She set a curse on her brother that night, banishing him to the evil depths of hell where he would rule as King of the under land. That night while the small party were asleep the Angel Thanatos disappeared and gained new titles. The devil.... Death.

Death soon found out that it was his sister who had banished him to hell and called for war. The Angel Nevaeh knew better than to come unprepared, as facing Death wasn't going to be an easy fight. The day before the battle she gathered her warriors at the shore of the nearest ocean. She took out a wooden goblet and filled it with the ocean water before her troops. Then she lifted the goblet to her face and cried. Her tears glistened like silver as they dropped into the goblet, mixing with the water.
She then announced that whoever did drink the contents of the goblet would be granted with a certain power, whether it would be flight, teleportation, healing powers and so on. And so, that day was spent gifting her warriors with powers from the never ending drink.
The following day she gladly reunited with her brother on the battlefield and along with her now ability wielding fighters, she defeated him once again. Death was confused and angry when he found out what she had done to her warriors and so he gathered up his remaining followers and they went to the same ocean she had gone to. There he found the wooden goblet the Angel Nevaeh had used, though it was empty. Once again the goblet was filled with the water from the ocean, however, Death try as he might, couldn't create any tears. So, he took out his best knife and cut his hand. Black blood oozed out and mixed with the water in the goblet creating a horrible murky liquid. Then, for good measure he let a few drops of his blood fall into the ocean. Like Death, the ocean gained a new name, now known today as the Bermuda Triangle, and anyone who dares enter will feel the wrath of Deaths breath.
That night, each one of his followers drunk the mixture and gained super human abilities. The strong became ten times stronger, the fast became ten times faster, the intelligent became ten times smarter and so forth. Death marvelled over his new race and returned to hell contempt that his kind would easily destroy his sisters kind all by themselves.
And so, over the many centuries, Deaths children and the Angels children fought battle after battle. However neither managed to defeat the other, so on the second of September, 1945 after the Second World War, a peace treaty was made between the two races. And therefore, the children of the children of the children of the Angel as well as Death manage to maintain that treaty to this very day.

So...that's how we came to be. That explains what Jacks different 'kind' is...he's a child of Death.

Suddenly the door bursts open, (not so quietly this time) and Kenna appears with an expression a mix of happiness, worry, relief, panic and uncertainty all at once, on her face.

"Dads back." She breaths.

Thanks for reading this chapter! I made a bit longer than usual to make up for last week (also chapters may start becoming around this length normally). Hope you enjoyed :)
