Sixteen
Jongho muttered to himself as he flipped through the books that Hongjoong had brought back for him. He had to do it in secret, and in the middle of the night, so that Wooyoung didn't figure out what he was doing. It had to be an absolute surprise.
He smiled to himself as he glanced over at the bed. Wooyoung always looked so peaceful when sleeping.
Yes everything needed to be perfect. He had to show Wooyoung just how much he loved him. He deserved it.
Jongho flipped to the next page and came across something he hadn't seen yet. He read through it slowly, wanting to absorb everything.
"Where on earth am I going to get one of those?" He grumbled. He had never seen anything like it... Maybe Hongjoong would know about it?
There were so many options listed there too, it was as if he had forgotten how to read while his eyes ran over the list.
Wooyoung let out a soft moan and rolled over, curling into a tight ball on the bed facing away from Jongho.
The younger sighed and returned to the page he was looking at. He flipped through a couple of others, taking note of the pictures that had been provided showing how things worked. He was surprised at how many people it actually involved, but he supposed that made sense seeing as partaking in this tradition used to be a very big deal.
He was just about to flip the page when Wooyoung cried out in his sleep.
Jongho jumped up as the older started shaking and clutching himself. "NO!" Wooyoung screamed and dug his nails into his arms hard enough to draw blood.
"Wooyoung!" Jongho shook him, trying to get him to wake up. His face was scrunched in pain and his eyes whirled back and forth under his eyelids. "Woo! It's ok, you're home! Wooyoung please wake up!'
"No! No!" Wooyoung screamed again. Now he dragged his hands down his arms, leaving long scratches.
Jongho started to panic and he grabbed Wooyoung's wrists to pry his hands away from his skin. Tears rolled down his cheeks as the older started to thrash beneath him, still screaming in his sleep. "Woo... Please..."
He jumped when he heard someone pounding on the door. "In here!" He called out.
The door burst open and he was relieved to see San come running in followed by Yunho. They paused when they saw that Jongho had Wooyoung pinned to the bed beneath him, but realization clicked when Wooyoung kept screaming and thrashing in his sleep.
"P-Please, I c-can't wake him up-p." Jongho sobbed.
San rushed to the side of the bed and knelt next to Wooyoung head, taking it in his hands. "Youngie, it's just a dream. You need to wake up now. Youngie, listen to my voice." San kept his tone calm and even as he started down at Wooyoung.
Jongho bit his lip and closed his eyes. He felt so helpless right now as his heart pounded against his chest. Why wasn't he waking up? Why? Was this really Calypso's doing?
"Youngie, you need to wake up now." San said over and over, running his hands through Wooyoung's hair.
Yunho stood off to the side, covering his mouth with his hand. Jongho glanced at him. Then the taller's eyes widened and he ran out of the hut.
"Wooyoung!" San said, his voice getting louder.
"I th-think it's Calypso." Jongho said, trying to calm himself down. "This happened a few nights ago..."
San looked at him and clenched his jaw.
The door opened again and Yunho came back with his mom, who rushed to Wooyoung's side as San moved out of the way. She stroked his face gently and told Yunho to get her a few herbs.
"Do you have a fire out back?" Teresa asked, looking to Jongho.
"Y-Yes, but I put it out a while ago."
"I can light it again if I need to." She got up at the same time Yunho came back and the two of them went outback.
San returned to Wooyoung's side for now, running a gentle hand over his face.
He still struggled in his sleep, trying to get away from the hands touching him. The screaming had died down a little, now it was more grunts and whimpers.
Teresa returned a few moments later with a bundle of herbs in her hand that she had lit on fire. San moved one more time as she came and stood over Wooyoung, waving the smoking bundle through the air. It gave of a strong, almost pungent scent, but it worked.
Wooyoung's eyes flew open and he gasped as he started to panic again.
Jongho immediately released him and pulled him up into his arms, openly sobbing again. It took a moment for the older to realize what was going one before he clung to Jongho.
"I've got you. It's ok." Jongho whispered over and over.
"P-Please don't l-let her take me." Wooyoung whispered. Jongho tightened his grip in response.
"She's not here. She doesn't know where you are. It's ok." Jongho exchanged worried looks with San.
They sat there for a long moment while Teresa went to dispose of the herbs. She left a list of what she had used behind before she left, saying good night to everyone and offering her help in the future if needed.
Yunho sat with the others on the bed and looked at Jongho. "Has this happened before?"
"Yes. A few nights ago."
Wooyoung let out a soft whine and tried to push his face further into Jongho's neck.
"I'm going to do some research to see what this could be. Will you be ok?"
"Yes." Jongho whispered. "Thank you. And please, thank your mom for me again too."
The taller nodded as he stepped out.
"How did you know?" Jongho looked to San. The older was gently rubbing Wooyoung's back.
"I was actually coming to talk to Wooyoung when I heard the screaming. Yunho was walking back from visiting his family."
At that, Wooyoung tilted his head to look at San. His eyes were red and puffy, but Jongho could still see the concern on his face. "What's wrong Sannie?"
