12:34 am. My smile grew wider as I saw the old black and blue van rumble up to the front of our drive way. High beams down and the engine roaring. I grabbed my stuff and started toward my window, opening it quietly. I looked out and saw my friend, Hazen, waving at me, shutting off the car.
I clambered out of the window and onto the roof in just my socks, my boots in my hands. "Best idea-"
"Shush! You want my mom and dad to wake up?!" I hissed at Emily who'd come running to help me down. I threw my bag at Hazen and sat down on the edge of the roof. Emily rolled her eyes in the moonlight. Her silvery gray hair that was once blond glittered in the moonlight. And her eyes were a pure green, and they glowed with a sense of magic and excitement in the night time. I jumped off the roof and landed on my hands and feet, laughing a little when Hazen and Kaleb came to help me up.
"I'm good, let's go!" I whispered, slipping on my untied combat boots and starting to run to the van.
Kaleb and Emily raced after me, Kaleb jumping in the drivers seat. My heart pounded and I felt like my legs were weak from all the adrenaline rushing through my veins. "You look tense," Hazen's voice echoed through my ears and snapped me out of my stage of shock. I realized I'd stopped in front of the car door, looking back at the house. I hadn't exactly disobeyed my parents like this before. I looked back at Hazen. His warm blue eyes, the color of ocean water stared back at me. Typical Aquarius, I thought with a smile as I took his now outstretched hand and climbed into the van. His sandy blond hair was messed up and he wore a regular white t-shirt under his normal navy blue jacket.
And, to be honest, he looked absolutely gorgeous in it. What am I thinking!? It's like saying you have a crush on your brother. I've known Hazen since we were six years old. First day of kindergarten, he pushed me off the playground. He hadn't meant for me to get hurt, but I ended up with a scraped elbow and I can still remember his blubbering and high pitched voice apologizing over and over. He'd sworn from that day on to protect me from the bullies that would (and never really did) come to get me. And he did keep his promise.
"Thanks, Haze," I said, sitting next to him in the back. I smiled at him and then turned my head to watch the house speed by.
"Yo, Sam. Wake up!" My eyes fluttered open and I realized I'd fallen asleep. The land outside was dark and barren, almost like a desert. I sat up and looked at the sky. Ribbons and flares of orange and pink and red were arching overhead. "How long have we been driving?" I asked looking over at Hazen, who had woken me up.
"About four hours, give or take," he said. Emily and Kaleb had switched drivers and Emily's green eyes were wide and looked tired. "You seem tired, Em," I teased lightly with a giggle. Emily stifled a chuckle and nodded. "Well, not everyone can sleep for the past four hours like you have," she said quietly.
"Hey, can we get some music going? Its so quiet," Kaleb complained. I shook my head.
"You're exactly like your sign, Kaleb," I said.
"The one and only Cancer for you, Leo!" he said, chuckling. Emily rolled her eyes and got out her phone, putting on a playlist. "For me?" I asked, folding my arms and raising an eyebrow with a smirk.
"All for you-" Just then, Emily elbowed Kaleb in the side and giggled.
