women of the shore (iso-onna)

the country of the legend : japan

The sea is full of Yokai who like to take on fishing vessels and fishermen.

These spirits would be those of killed sea animals or the ghosts of women who would have drowned.

Where the waves break, on the shore, it is not uncommon for the walker to hear a voice inviting him to join him.

Woe to the curious who approaches because soon, a long hair grabs him like a tentacle and leads him to the bottom of the waters.

The Iso-onna can then calmly suck his blood.

These scary creatures are also called  Iso-hime (princess of the shore) or Umi-hime (princess of the seas).

Fishermen are their favorite "target".

From head to waist, Iso-onna looks like a beautiful woman with long hair, but no one really knows what the lower part of this strange lady of the waters looks like.

In some representations, she is adorned with a snake tail like a Nure-onna ( nure-onna is a youkai that looks like an amphibious creature with the head of a woman and the body of a snake. Although the description of its appearance varies slightly from history to history, it is described as being 300 m long with snake eyes, long claws, fangs and long and beautiful hair)

In the province of Hizen, the Iso-onna slip into the boats when they are moored and claim fishers from the fishermen. If the sailors are asleep, their lives are in danger because these ladies cover them with their imposing hair with which they will suck their blood until death.

On the side of the Goto archipelago in the province of Hizen, some Iso-onna resemble Ningyo  (ningyo is a creature from the seas of Japanese mythology. Formerly, it was depicted with a human torso, a monkey's mouth with fish teeth, a fish tail with golden scales and a soft voice that sounded a little like the sound of a flute or the song of a swallow)

a ningyo look like this :

Some fishermen are smarter and that is why in the Shimabara peninsula in the Kyushu region, the sailors do not moor but only anchor when they dock. To sleep, they wear three strands of rushes on their clothes to protect them from Iso-onna attacks.
