Chapter Eight

When Zenny woke, she was in one the rooms of the Big Space. She was lying on an old mat. She sat up wanting to rip the mask off of her face. She stopped however, when she looked around to see that she was alone. She'd only visited the Big Space once before. To watch Lade teach with Remis.

That day, Remis sat next to her, explaining things as Lade taught a couple students. They sat way up in the seats that surrounded the place. Though, she'd never been back in one of the rooms before. But this had to be BP since it was the only place she knew of that had rooms like this.

All around her were metal cabinets. Most of them with broken or barely attached doors. The paint had all but completely chipped off. They had strange slits across the top, and holes on the latches. Perhaps for a lock of some kind. She could only figure that because one of them was tied shut with rope. The floor had strange tile. Parts where tiles that were missing had been replaced with cement blocks. There were benches that looked increasingly unstable. So she was glad to have found herself on the mat laying on the floor.

Just as she prepared to stand up Remis walked in along with Lade. "We were waiting for you to wake up." Remis smiled. "Class is about to start."

Zenny apparently loved learning to fight. She loved the running, the stretching. She loved lifting weights. She loved practicing stances. Strikes and kicks, and throws. It enveloped her. It made it easier to forget. It made it easier to go numb. She didn't have to think about Zakt. She was too tired to dream about him. She was too tired to stay up thinking about him. Repetition, repetition. Practice, eat, practice, sleep, practice, harvest, practice, and read. A few days passed, then a few weeks, a month here and there. It was all the same now. Still, nothing lasts forever.

"Kick, strike, kick, kick, strike." Allius the instructor for beginners said over and over. As Lade walked in the room he paused, but continued as Lade nodded. Zenny put all of her energy into it, she could do no less. It was all she could do not think. Suddenly Lade was in front of her. She continued a little nervously, never having been watched so closely by Lade before. He stood in front of her. Just staring intently.

"Stop." He called out. The class stopped. All a little nervous at his intent. "Allius, come before Zenny." He called moving out of the way.

"Yessir." Allius replied. He came and stood before Zenny.

"Zenny, strike Allius." He said as the rest of the students moved behind him.

"What-" Zenny started.

"NOW!" Lade demanded, cutting Zenny's question. Zenny stood silent for a moment in obvious confusion, then got into stance. "Allius don't let her hit you."

Zenny gave it try. She tried a strike, for which Allius simply moved out of the way. She then went for kick, Allius caught her foot softly. "I can't" she relented.

"Try again." He said simply. She did try again, and again and again. Until finally, Lade stopped her angrily. "You are not even trying! Now I told you to do something, and you refuse. I want you to put your best effort into hitting him. Not just your damned repetitions! Now DO IT!" he commanded her now. "Allius, don't just block – counter." he instructed.

Zenny was getting frustrated, anyone close enough could tell, because her eyes were a bright reddish orange. No longer the embarrassed pink. Zenny ran at Allius, but before she could do anything, he grabbed her and flipped her onto her back. Zenny stood up, and went for a turn, then kicked high. Allius pushed her leg down and away, then gave her kick that landed her back onto the ground. Zenny stood once more, she let him grab foot as she kicked. She twisted her body and used his hand as a foot-hold, then stood and using her free leg, kicked his chest to the ground. They both toppled to floor. Zenny rolled away, and as he stood she ran and landed him one to the face.

"Stop!" Lade said now smiling. "Zenny come with me." He instructed softly as he turned away. Zenny by now, could hardly stand much less walk. She just huffed in air for moment. Then straightened out and limped after him. "Zenny, do you think any other student in your class could have done that?" he asked as they walked.

"Um, well we all have the same teacher. They started before I did so-."

"No Zenny, they could not. None of them are as strong, fast, or skilled as you are now. You, are something special." He turned to her now, as they had entered a room. "You, are much more than you think. You should have been knocked out from the moment he flipped you. Allius has been training with me, since I started."

"I got lucky, plus I've been running a lot and exercising. So -." Suddenly she was cut off, by a sharp kick to the stomach. Before she could react, something rammed into her head and she hit the ground. She was dizzy, and couldn't breathe, but she stood up, shaking as she went. Her vision was blurred so when she felt Lade grab her by the arm, she couldn't even see it happen. Before she could focus her eyes she was flying through the air. She could feel her body moving, but nothing was touching her. Not even Lade's hand. She gasped as she slammed against something hard. She couldn't tell if it was the wall or the ceiling, but before she knew it she was falling. She hit the ground with a thud. She was still awake, somehow she could still move. She braced her hands to the floor, and pushed hard. She was barely conscious and couldn't see and inch in front of her, but soon she was standing.

"Amazing." She heard Lade say. He came up to her and starting inspecting. He lifted her shirt slightly just to see her stomach. "That should have killed you. Yet you're not even bruised." He started, grabbing her chin and examining her mouth. "You don't seem to be bleeding either." He whispered.

"LADE!!" Remis yelled. "What the hell are you doing? She hit the ceiling and you didn't even TRY to catch her! I would try and kill you, if I thought I had a chance!" Remis shoved Lade against the wall whom didn't even put up a fight.

"Look for yourself, Allius gave her a beating as well, she doesn't have a scratch on her." Lade pointed out. "I knew what I was doing. I did the same thing to Kai when HE was seven. She's fine. Not even knocked out. Hardly conscious – but the lights are still on." He explained as Remis let him go and immediately turned to Zenny.

Remis stood open mouthed, as Zenny wiped her eyes. She squinted and sat against the wall. As she inhaled and exhaled she looked up and Remis regarding him. "Can I have some water?" she asked softly.

"Sure. . ." he answered slowly. He went and kneeled next to her. He kept just looking her over. He searched for any sign of injury. Amazingly he found none. He stood slowly, and made his way out the room. He'd get her some water, she HAD asked for it.

By the time Remis returned Zenny was fast asleep. Lade tapped his shoulder and took him outside. "She, wasn't hurt at all. . . I don't understand." Remis whispered.

"Zenny, and Kai are the same. I don't know – maybe they even had the same father. They look a lot alike. That same skin. You see, I noticed while they practiced that her moves were faster, and more precise. They had so much more power in them. They were not novice movements. Just like with Kai, it seemed natural. Zakt had small traces of it. He was fast, if anything. You and Jelm are just plain intense. Jelm, if only he wasn't so interested in – well Zakt, he could have been an even better fighter than you. . . Sometimes I wonder why you fight, when you were so much more intellectual. You and him should have switched places."

"Nah, Jelm is a softer person. He's polite and quiet. He liked to keep to what he knew. Fighting, is loud, and requires so much practice. You can't just practice by yourself – you need to spar, and people like to watch. He liked to study, because you can read all by yourself. It wasn't something you got a lot of attention for, and people don't just come around to watch you. He only ever need be around one person at time. He always said, fighting is for those who expect to need it. The way he saw it, the stronger you were, the more likely you'd have to be."

"Hmm, and as I take it - ." Lade smirked at Remis.

"Hey, I don't get into fights because people want to challenge me, most people just take my kindness for weakness." Remis leaned against a wall.

"Kindness huh? I wonder how things will change, when you go up. Will you still be the same people, even if you can't remember the people who made you who you are?" he asked sadly. "I wonder what type of person I used to be. I can't say I miss it. I don't even know if I liked it. All I know is who I am now. The people I met, made me the person I have become. I wonder what type of people I knew in my past life."

"Zakt, he arranged it, so that somehow we'll all meet again. He said that we may never remember how it was before, but at least we'll get to know the people we knew." Remis laughed. He looked up and wondered exactly how Jelm and Zakt were doing. What exactly was it like up there? By now Jelm knew whether or not they only drank water, and ate tube-paste. By now, Zakt had probably already figured out the first clue. By now, by now. . . "By now Zenny should be waking up huh?"

"I'm already awake." Zenny said coming out the door. Zenny rubbed her eyes tiredly and walked out. Both Remis and Lade watched her curiously.

"Are you hurting anywhere?" Remis asked concerned.

"No, I'm fine. . . When did I fall asleep? All I remember is after you came into the room, Lade said – that. .?" she asked a little lost. Zenny sat down next to Remis, and laid her head back against the wall.

"Remis, If it's alright with you," Lade started standing. He grabbed Remis by the hand and helped him to stand. "I'd like train Zenny privately, myself." He smiled, obviously a little exhilarated.

"I can't let you do that" Remis said cautiously. "I've seen how you treated Kai, I remember training with you. She's not me – she's not Kai." Remis assured sternly.

"Then I can't train her. . . I can't let her spar with my other students. I'm not going to be responsible for another Taeren." Lade shook his head with frustration.

"She's not Kai!!! She's not going to get that strong. . . Not all at once. . . She's not him." Remis pressed. Remis turned away now obviously upset at the situation. Lade walked up to meet him and pulled him into the room Zenny had come from. Zenny stared at the door. What was going on? This was about her. Part of her just wanted to rush in and yell at them to tell her what was going on. However she was smarter than that. If she were to go in there now, and demand knowledge, they would lock up on her. If they did tell her what she wanted to know – it could end in her finding out something she wasn't meant to know. That ate at her, because the only person who would have wanted to keep something hidden from her, would have been Zakt. Somehow she could feel that this was all connected, and if it was, it was better that she stay out of it until the right time. "Damn you," she said to the invisible man standing before her. Probably knowing it would have come to this, but trusting she would make this very decision. To be still.
