Cool air calmly wisps around my burrow, enticing me that something amazing is happening outside. Happy cat noises suddenly came into my ears.
That can only mean one thing:
Like the dawn and dusk unite upon the horizon, our desire for this event could not be halted. It could wash away any sorrows we had with a snap of fingers. Cure the depression so many of us had over the course of this life. Calm one to the brink of serenity, and energize them as if the bolts of lightning struck our bodies. Be one with both worlds. It was the Rain Dance.
I hurriedly crawled out to meet with the wave of cats making to the exits. Leafs rustled on outside, giving hint that this was a gusty time.
The rain determines what we do during our dancing. Something light like a drizzle symbolizes simplicity. Like slowly swaying side to side, or doing ballerina leaps. As the rain intensifies, so does our dancing. If a raging storm is going on, we take to the blustery air and fly about.
Some would worry we would get seen, but as far as I know that getting pelted by water makes us nearly invisible. The only thing giving us away are our faint outlines. During foggy days is the greatest time to do some foraging.
As the cloud-filled sky came into view, I could already feel the bliss among the droplets. My body gradually became clear, making me feel safe inside. Lucy nuzzled up to my face with a smirk.
"I can already guess what the style today is,"
"No kidding you don't," I chuckled. "It's probably some west side story dancing based on these conditions."
"Hah, I was thinking that. You know me so well,"
Once all of us came out except the ones in poverty, one of the many invisible slime cats began snapping their fingers. Then one after another, we snapped together. I did my best attempt at a backflip, but it ended up with my face in the grass.
Several others mimicked my movement, landing straight on their faces like I did. We didn't stop snapping. Picking myself up with the others, we started swaying together. But like most times, it was in all different directions.
A small group of six cartwheeled to some trees, and shifted into climbing form for an obvious purpose. They waited at the top for us to do something.
Out of nowhere, thunder grumbled out in the distance, with a flash of lightning shortly after it. The rain began to fall harder.
We picked up our pace, swaying more vigorously and at times jumping followed by a clap. The prologue of the movie played inside my head, urging me to hum out the music.
Luckily somebody beat me to it, whistling the flutes that played while they danced among the street. I, along with several others sang along with them, building up to the trumpets. Suddenly we broke out into song, performing all kinds of acrobatic movements. I shifted into flying form and did a mid-air summersault before diving down to the bushes.
Just before I crashed into them I pivoted up and above the trees. More slime cats followed me around before circling down into the overgrowth.
This random west side story dancing continued for about half an hour, but it was quick. The rain still poured down on us, but it got gentler since the beginning of our symphony. For the finale we all shifted into flying form, creating a cylinder. Together we dashed above the various trees and exploded with a rather sudden shout,
"We're being watched! I knew this would happen!"
We quietly landed on the branches close to the trunk, scanning the area for Kymari.
"There's one- excuse me TEN behind that conifer!" A kit whined, pointing at said tree. It was about a street block away, but still nerve wracking to say the least.
My body was petrified to this spot. Unmovable. Finally they noticed us, or maybe they had already known about us and we just found out about it.
All I could think about was what they were going to do next. One of them, a female, came in front of their hiding spot with a device in her hands. From here, I couldn't make out exactly what it was, but it's small like a camera.
Is she recording us?
The Rain Dance made us calmer, despite almost all of us in the eyes of Kymari. If it hadn't rained, we probably would all be panicking to return underground.
Speaking of rain, it stopped merely a few seconds ago. Like someone could easily stop the flow of rain like a light switch. The sun crept out from behind the escaping clouds, taking away our invisibility.
Already the colors that we possess blossomed upon us. The trees are now full of color, and unsureness.
"Mama mama! They look so pretty!" A voice belonging to a Kymari child squealed. The little green kid suddenly ran out to us, making me loose my balance. Before I could plummet, Lucy along with Bailey and Peter pulled me up to them.
"Don't worry Katy, as long as we-"
Oh god no! In their efforts to keep me not falling they started leaning backwards. All of them at once is too heavy for me to even out the odds.
"Maybe we can try to balance?-" I suggested, but got cut off.
The branch snapped, and we are descending to the lower plants.
