This question depends on the Fanfiction.
For Bark or Bite and Cost of Magic I have always had a beginning and finish in mind, but it's just getting to that finish that I had to figure out and sometimes that can be tedious.

As for 'A Family Worth Living For' I only had the beginning and random plot points in mind when I started it. It is very much a 'go with the flow' Fanfiction but I'm also helped with Fan suggestions :)

But with all my Fan fictions they have been bursts of imagination.
'Family Worth' was actually started with a dream I had, more specifically being 'Chapter 3: Meeting the Sirs'.

When it comes to information.... I watch way to much Yogscast so the information comes quite easily but I also do a lot of research, if that be about Gaming Conventions, Yogscast birthday or looking up names of items from mod packs (like Thaurmcraft).

As for the feels well, let's say I'm a bitch!
I love writing and sometimes my mind just takes control and I go off on a feels trip.
I have also dealt with a lot of personal things in my life so have personal experience of pain and loss. However I am very careful not to over do it in my Fics as I still want them to be 'believable'.

For length I have a word minimum and maximum.
I aim for at least 800 words in a chapter unless it needs to be finished quicker, and an absolute maximum of 2500, as really long chapters can be painful to read.

I sometimes cut chapters shorter than I would like to because it gives the chapter a better finishing point.
