I get VERY annoyed when I see people giving our favorite shorty the very low ranks of Corporal or Lance Corporal (these ranks are JUST about Privates, which is what everyone starts out as).

OKAY! So, what is Levi's actual rank, you may ask?

Levi's rank isn't really confirmed, as far as I know, all I know is that it is REALLY high. If we're going by the United States Army ranks, I would say he would be a Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, or Colonel. The reason being, There are only five more ranks over Colonel, which makes those four ranks some very high ranks. In Army JROTC, those are the highest ranks cadets can achieve.

Okay... I did some research, and Levi is surprisingly OLD in ACWNR! ACWNR takes place ONE year before AoT starts, so Corporal Levi does make sense. I always thought that there was way MORE time in between, but surprisingly not. I just watched the clip from when we FIRST see the Survey Corps return from an exepidition, and Levi's name wasn't even brought up, you don't even see him! So, with the information I just gained, I realize that the first return of the Survey Corps that we see in the Anime, is in fact the one where Isabel and Farlan were killed. When you see Erwin as he glances at the young Mikasa and Eren, he looks away with, what I believe, guilt. You see, Erwin was the one who planned the formation for the exepidition so he must feel it is his fault for sending that many people to their deaths. Therefore, I do believe Levi could be a corporal, if he wasn't jumping ranks. Levi could also be a Sergeant, but with the timeline of the series, I highly doubt that Levi would possibly make it to the highest ranks, or even half way there. So, Levi could very well be a Corporal, it just depends on the qualifications to be promoted really.
