Don't Set Him Free - Part 2
Hannah jumped and whirled around. "What was that? What did that?"
"Maybe it was just sitting on the edge and fell off?" Sam suggested, but it sounded more like a question.
"Yeah right, dude. It's been sitting there all day and it just happened to fall off now?" Chase said back as if Sam were stupid for thinking that.
"He's angry," Lilly said.
"He?" Everyone asked at the same time.
"I think it's David."
"Why is he angry?" Hannah asked.
"Because we brought them here. He doesn't like it, and he doesn't want us to help Betty."
"How do you know all of this? What are you? Are you a freak or did Chad pay you to do this?"
"I've barely even said two words to anyone in this school the three weeks I've been here, let alone Chad. I'm not doing anything; I can just...feel it. It's hard to explain, it's like they're communicating with me. I don't know," Lilly threw her hands in the air in exasperation.
"Can you guys stop worrying about how she can tell and start focusing on the fact that we are locked in a room with a homicidal ghost?" Sam shouted.
"Not only that, we're locked in a room with various things that can be used to kill us."
"Shut them out, make them go away!" Timothy shouted at Lilly.
"How am I supposed to do that?"
"I don't know, but you're the one who let them in, and you're the one who knows what they want. Just do it."
"I don't know what's going on anymore than you do, or the rest of them."
"No, but nothing has ever happened in the past, then you show up and not only does Betty come, but her homicidal boyfriend who killed her," Hannah screamed. One of the burners at the lab table turned on followed by the burner at the next table until they were all lit.The flames snuffed out, but they could still smell the gas running.
"Turn them off. Turn all of them off now!" Lilly said as she ran to the closest table. The others followed, going to the tables closest to them and turning the knob to shut off the gas. As Chase moved to the next table he flew backwards.
"Dude, what happened?" Timothy asked.
"Something just hit me in the chest. Hard." Chase sat up looking around.
"Are the rest of them off?" Lilly asked. She looked to the other two who nodded.
"Are you okay, Chase?"
"I'm fine, but we either need to figure out how to get rid of these things, or we need to find a way out of here."
"We need to help Betty though, we can't just leave her with that guy," Sam said.
"She's dead, man. There isn't anything we can do for her now," Hannah squeaked.
"How would you like it if a group of people left you with your killer when they could have helped you?""I'd be dead, so I don't think I'd care too much!" One of the stools fell onto its side with a loud crash and everyone jumped.
"Please go away," Lilly whispered, hoping that the gesture would be enough to dismiss the spirit. She wasn't sure how it was possible, but somehow she was able to communicate with them. If they could talk to her, then she hoped her message could get across to them as well.
"We just want to wait out the rest of the night and leave you alone, please just go away."It was like a whisper across her mind, the deep voice of David that let her know he was going nowhere anytime soon, not after what they'd done. He was going to make them pay for summoning Betty and trying to help her. He wasn't going to let her leave his side; nothing was going to keep them apart.
A beaker flew from one of the lab tables hitting the stool next to Chase. Shards flew everywhere, one of them catching the back of his hand, cutting him. Chase hissed and placed his other hand over the wound.Sam ran to the door and jiggled the handle, pulling as hard as he could, trying to open the door. Nothing worked, not that any of them expected it to.
Lilly checked the scratch on the back of Chase's hand. It wasn't deep and it was barely bleeding. She wasn't terribly worried about that, what she was worried about was the fact that they had an angry ghost, one who could manipulate the things around them. He could physically touch them and inflict harm.Everyone sat still and the silence echoed around them. They could hear their own breathing as they looked around the dark room, the moon their only light.
"Maybe if we just stay still he'll leave us alone," Hannah whispered. At her words, the stool that had fallen over flew at one of the walls, the wooden legs breaking into larger pieces.
"So much for that theory," Lilly grumbled.
"Don't you all wish we had our phones now?" Hannah asked.
"Like anyone would believe us even if we called to tell them what was going on," Chase said.
"I wouldn't believe you."Taps sounded around them, like the sound of footsteps on the tile. Their head moved around as the sound came from different parts of the room and Hannah let out a sob. She'd started crying.
"I didn't want to do this stupid thing. I'd never wanted to do it. When the squad nominated me I was so pissed, but I couldn't back out. I'm the captain for crying out loud! The captain can't back out of stupid challenges."Something solid flew past, hitting the bottom of the table next to Hannah's head. The glass shattered and she screeched, diving to the side away from it. She cursed as her hand landed on shattered pieces. The footsteps continued around as Hannah held her hand, crying as she tried to pick out the shards of glass. It was like the ghost was toying with the kids, watching as the fear slowly started to set in and they realized the situation.
Lilly could feel the anger that pulsed around the room. She knew that this anger was far more than David's distaste for what they'd done. He was an unsettled spirit, one that was just angry. It followed him everywhere, and anger that he was now directing at them and there was nothing they could do to stop it.
The activity started to pick up. What Lilly assumed was David grabbed Hannah's ankle and dragged her into the center of the room and she started kicking and screaming. He was letting them know that he could manipulate not only the things around them, but them as well. They were completely at his mercy. When she came to a stop in the center of them all, she scooted back slightly as if trying to get away from whatever must have been right in front of her. The girl's heart was racing, her breathing coming in ragged gasps.Timothy raced to Hannah's side, putting his hands on her shoulders as he looked her over. Besides the cuts she'd gotten from the glass and being shaken up, she was all right.
"What if we help Betty cross over? He'd leave then wouldn't he?" He asked.
"Or he'd get extremely pissed and just kill us. You know he can do it; he's playing with us man. If he wants us dead, we're dead. There's nothing we can do about it." Sam tried to sound strong, but his voice trembled as he spoke.
That was when things started to pick up. Jars flew off shelves, chemicals falling to the ground and flying through the air. Powders soaring and liquids spraying as it went everywhere. The room had been turned into a battlefield with five high schoolers against an invisible entity that had the upper hand. They couldn't kill it, but he could most certainly do damage to him.
Lilly pointed them between two lab tables that would serve as a relative shield. The four went ahead, Lilly following after. She grabbed a couple stools, pulling them with her to use as a blockade at the opening, but one of them was yanked from her grasp and tossed, crashing against the door.
"We're going to die in here," Hannah cried. She cowered in the corner of one of the lab tables, her back against the wall.
The others were too shaken to say anything.Lilly grabbed another stool, trying to shake off the fear from feeling the last one being yanked from her grasp. When she put her hand on it though, she felt a burning around her wrist. She looked down to see a red handprint forming, the fingers appearing as if they were wrapped around her wrist. She jerked her hand back and grabbed around one of the legs, moving backwards quickly to barricade their hiding place.Lilly knew it wasn't going to be terribly effective, but it gave them a sense of security, to think that they had a place that could protect them, even if only a little.
"Everyone back up so you're under the ledge of the tables. If anything comes from above you don't want to get hit." Lilly was already backing up as she told the others to do the same. They all listened, scrambling back quickly.
Lilly looked at the watch around her other wrist. It was nearly five thirty in the morning. Chad would be coming back to unlock the door in a half hour. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing, or a bad one. As it stood, David's spirit was still in this room, would opening the door to let him run rampant on the rest of the school?
No, she was sure that he could go wherever he wanted to while he was there, but it would be putting more people in danger. Who knows what would happen to him if he opened the door. He'd be right in the line of fire, completely exposed.
The five students could hear the battle raging outside of their little cubbyhole. It was like there was a massive tornado roaring around them. The stools that were their only source of protection at the opening flew away and Timothy's head smacked against the wall behind him as he was dragged out of the mouth of the tables.
"Timmy!" Hannah shouted as she reached for his hand, trying to pull him back. They could hear the grunt of pain from Timothy as the fight went out between the invisible force and Hannah.
"What are you doing? Don't just sit there, help me!" She shouted.Lilly was closest, so she grabbed Timothy's other hand, pulling with Hannah. It was like he was stuck, David wasn't going to let him go.
There was a cry of pain and a tearing sound. The two girls looked up to see one of his pant legs shredding like claws were tearing through, and blood started to flow as the scratches penetrated his skin, forming deep gashes. With a hard tug, he was torn from their grasp and he slid along the floor to the other side of the room, his head slamming against the brick wall.
He lay there unmoving and Lilly's hand covered her mouth, fighting back a scream that tried to escape. Hannah didn't hold it back though, she moved to run over to him, but Sam grabbed her arm holding her back.Hannah hit him, slapping his arm and pounding his chest to make him let her go.
"You're not going to do anything but get yourself hurt too if you do that," Sam warned.
"But I have to make sure he's alright! What if he's dead?"
"He's a football player, he's taken hits just as hard on the field," Chase said.
"But he has a helmet! He doesn't have one now, you idiot!"
Chase was about to say something back when he jerked his hand from his side to his chest. Lilly looked at it, noticing a handprint forming on his arm as well, causing the one around her wrist to throb. She looked between the two marks trying to figure out what they were, or why they'd been placed there.A glass jar full of liquid went barreling between the four still hiding, dripping down the wall and soaking Sam and Hannah who'd been the closest to it.
They shook and their breathing stopped as the room went silent.Nothing happened. They sat there quietly for three minutes. When still nothing happened they looked around between them.
"What is this?" Hannah asked, looking down at the liquid that was still on her arm.
"I don't know, but it can't be dangerous. They lock that stuff up until it's time to use it," Sam whispered back.
"Should we go out there?" Chase asked.
Should they go out there? Lilly wanted to stay right where she was, hiding until that door unlocked and they could get the heck out of there. She wanted to go home and tell her mother that she wasn't going to go back, that they were going to move again or she was going to transfer to a different school. No way was she going to stay in a place that had a homicidal spirit roaming free.
Her mother would probably book her into the loony bin though. She'd never believe what had happened.Chase started to inch his way out, Sam and Hannah following after him. Lilly groaned and made her way out as well. They looked around the room. It was completely trashed.
Hannah made her way directly to Timothy. Sam went over as well as she started to freak out. He still hadn't moved and Hannah was worried that he was dead. Sam checked his pulse, saying that he was still alive, just unconscious.Lilly let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She looked to the clock as the last minutes before Chad's arrival started to tick away. Could David have really left? Were they going to be in the clear?
A cold chill overcame Lilly and she gasped, stepping back slightly. She looked up to see Chase holding his arm, his hand over the print that had been left behind.
"What?" Sam asked, worried that something else had happened.Lilly and Chase looked at each other before looking to Sam.
"It was nothing...just a cold chill. I think they just both left," she said.
"Are you sure? Do you really think they would just leave like that after everything?"
"I'm the one that can sense what they were doing, don't you think I'd know?" Lilly snapped.Sam put his hands in the air in surrender.
"Fine, okay. If you say so." He looked down as Timothy stirred. They heard a rattle at the door and Hannah sighed in relief as Chad turned the handle and opened it, poking his head through.
"What in the world happened in here? You weren't supposed to trash the place," he said as he looked at the trashed science lab.
"You are not going to believe it," Hannah said as she helped Timothy sit up. "They both came. Betty and David."
"Yeah right. It's been sixty years and nothing's ever happened. What would make this year any different?"
"I think it was because of me. I have some sort of...ability or something," Lilly said as she looked to Chad.
"Ha ha very funny."Lilly just shrugged and she made her way to the door, Chase following after her.
"Where in the world are you guys going? You can't leave. We have to do something about this mess. We're going to get in so much trouble," Sam said.
"Sorry, I don't know what to tell ya." Lilly looked over her shoulder and gave a small wave, Chase just ducking out the door. When the two had gotten a ways down the hall they looked at each other with smiles that were very much not their own and grabbed each other's hand.
"Are you ready to get out of here, baby doll?" Chase asked.
"Been waiting nearly a lifetime, baby," Lilly replied.
Chase opened the door and they walked out as the sun started peaking up above the silhouette of houses from the town.
