Chapter Ten
I was in the arena, stabbing furiously at Nico with my dagger. He dodged and blocked, always on the defense. Swinging his sword, Nico parried my strikes and struck forward, putting me on the defense, while letting his guard down and leaving his stomach exposed.
A sudden idea formed in my head, and my gray eyes narrowed. I loosened my grip on my dagger and let him disarm me, falling down to the ground. Gasps of shock were heard from the crowd, but I kept my attention focused sorely on Nico. He pressed his sword to my throat, lightly enough to not draw blood.
"Yield." He growled. I smiled.
"I don't think so." I smirked, and judo flipped him over my shoulder, before yanking his own sword from his grasp and pressing it to his throat, while guarding myself so he couldn't do the same to me.
"You yield." I demanded and he groaned in defeat, having lost again. I helped him to his feet and turned to face my pupils. "Okay class, what did you learn from this lesson?" I called out to all of the younger campers.
Gavin, a son of Ares confidently raised his hand. I pointed at him. "That Annabeth Chase kicks butt!" I chuckled, along with Nico, who was helping out today. Twirling my dagger in my hand, I pointed the imperial gold blade at another youngster.
"Um, that Nico isn't good at defending?"
Nico glared from beside me, and I smothered a laugh. "Not quite. Does anyone else have anything to say?" Nobody raised their hands.
"Alright. I have showed you that you must accept defeat. I have also showed you that one doesn't need a weapon to fight back. Where did Nico go wrong?" I explained.
An Apollo camper raised his hand confidently. "Mr. Nico let his guard down when he counter attacked, and underestimated you when he knocked you down." He said. I smiled.
"Exactly. Alright, class dismissed!" I yelled, and turned to walk out of the arena. A sudden high pitched girlish scream pierced the air, stopping me in my tracks.
"STAY HERE!" I yelled to my students and took off, my dagger held tightly in my grip, Nico by my side.
Another scream tore through the air, and I noticed a crowd forming around a group of poles that hadn't been there the last time I'd checked.
I pushed my way through to see Jack, bound and tied to the pole, tears streaming down his cheeks, his right hand a bloody mess. I gaped in horror as I realized that all but his index finger were cut off, down to the knuckles. Feeing bike rising in my throat, I turned to face his attacker, a man draped in a black cloak, a hood and mask shielding his identity from my furious gaze.
"HEY!" I screeched, drawing his attention from his victim. "Look, I know that Jack is a complete asshole, but LEAVE HIM ALONE!" The man snorted, and the campers surrounding us began to back away, knowing from experience that I was going to start a fight.
"Why should I? He has insulted my mistress, Annabeh Chase." He hissed, and recoiled a his tone.
"How do you know my name?" I demanded, and he laughed softly.
"I know a lot about you, Miss Chase. A lot more than you would think." The gears were turning in my brain now, trying to come up with the identity of this man to no success. Instead, I asked another question that was plaguing my mind.
"Who is your mistress." I asked. He turned serious.
"Lady Artemis. I am her guardian, sworn to protect her at all costs. Jack here has insulted her, and myself. He needs to pay." He said coldly. I narrowed my eyes.
"You'll have to go through me. This is MY camp, and you can't just punish whoever you want...."I trailed off, not knowing his name.
"I am Anagenniménos." He said. My Brian easily translated his name, reborn.
"Very well, Anagenniménos. I challenge you. If you win, you are free to do whatever you wish to Jack. If I win, which is the more likely outcome, you will tell my your identity, and follow my command during your stay at Camp Half Blood." I challenged. He cracked his knuckles.
"This will be a breeze." He said confidently, and drew a simple sword from somewhere under his cloak. Taking a closer look, I noticed it was a training sword, used for beginners. Scanning his figure, I noticed actual swords, really massive one and multiple daggers. Feeling insulted, I took my stance, my anger beginning to rise to a boil.
I let out a battle cry and charged, and he merely blocked it, one hand behind his back. It seemed as if he knew my every move, as he counter attacked and parried every strike, leaving me on the offense, while not being able to hit anything. I growled and struck faster, my strikes becoming sloppy and disoriented. He laughed and continued his lazy but yet so annoying affective movements. Inspiration stuck home, and I decided on using the technique I'd used on Nico earlier, loosening my grip on my dagger.
Anagenniménos tensed quickly, and I had a feeling that he knew what I was going to do. But it was impossible.
Within seconds, he had me disarmed and pinned to the ground, and I saw my chance. Lighting fast, my arm darted forward to judo flip him from my position on the ground, not an easy feat, but his hand reached out and blocked mine ten times faster. I gaped, and I could almost hear his smirk from under the stupid cloak and mask.
"I believe I win, Miss Chase." He said, and I grumbled something incoherent.
"What was that?" He asked innocently, and I could feel the stares of the shocked campers burning into my back.
"I yield." I growled out. He held out his hand, and I accepted, letting him help me to my feet. Something seemed vaguely familiar to the feel of his hand in mine, but I shook it off. I was just missing Percy.
"Good fight, Miss Chase. You gave me more competition than some of the Hunters, but not enough." He said, somewhat teasingly. My eyes narrowed.
"I doubt you're joking. You seem like an excellent fighter, and I do hope you can teach me how you knew my every move before I did." I said, and shook hands.
"Now, because I won, I do hope you will hold to our terms?" He said. I cursed myself, I had completely forgotten about the Jack predicament.
"No." I said. "I can't let you hurt him. Please." I said. He turned to face me again.
"And why is that, Annabeth Chase?" He asked, his tone deadly quiet. I shivered involuntarily.
"I-" I started, but couldn't find words.
"That's what I thought." He snorted, and drew a knife.
My hands shook. In desperation, I threw myself towards him, my hands desperately reaching for his hood.
"What are you doi-" Anagenniménos started, but was cut off as I crashed into him, sending the two of us rolling down a hill. I took that opportunity to grab his hood and yank it down with all my strength.
I nearly died as I looked down at the man I was sitting on top of. I heard yells of shock, and screams from the campers. I heard the pounding of footsteps and I could hear the recognizable shout from Artemis, who had shown up sometime.
But I ignored them all. Because below me was the messy, Raven black hair of one unconscious Percy Jackson.
Percy was back.
