Chapter 5
I sit alone on one of the deep blue sofas in the foyer. The fireplace is a light and the flames are dancing. Across from me, Twilight and a few of her friends gather around one of the long, blue sofas, some sitting on the small table in front of it, Twilight is perched on the arm, three sitting normally on the sofa, and the last one is draped upside-down over the back of it like a blanket. The other girls are scattered across the room, some talking, others doing homework, and others walking to and from the room.
I sit sideways on the small sofa near the fireplace with my legs draped over the side and a large textbook in my lap. My quill scratches the page as I write the answers to the questions we have to study for Human Studies. Once I've finished, I close the book and place it on the table next to me, then picking up another to begin that homework. I flick to the back where I usually write my homework down to find that there is nothing there for today.
Welp, crap.
I look over at Twilight as she chats cheerfully with her friends, contemplating whether to ask her if she remembers the homework. I eventually just ask her. It's not like I'm asking her to date me! Jeez!
"Hey Twilight?" I ask, getting her attention and the attention of her friends. They don't exactly like me, but Twilight can tolerate me. We used to be best friends when we were kids, so, I hope she can see that I'm not evil. "Do you remember the Arithmancy homework?"
"Yup," she responds cheerfully, "It's the questions on page 120 to 122."
"Got it. Thanks Twi."
"Don't mention it." After that, she goes back to merrily chatting with her friends. I can tell they are talking about me, even without looking up from the book. My quill scratches the page every so often when I answer a question to keep from looking suspicious.
"Twi, are you sure you can trust her?" one of Twilight's friends, Nekoette I think, asks her.
"Yes, I'm sure," Twilight answers.
"But, she's... her wings," another one of her friends, Sarah, said. Somewhere halfway between fear and curiosity.
"Yes, and?" Twilight asks sarcastically.
"Haven't you heard the rumours?" I hear the voice of Nekoette's sister, Charollette, "Hanna told me that Ivy was taken by her." She said the last part carefully, as if afraid I would hear. Not careful enough. Ivy? They think that I took Ivy? Wow. That's low. I didn't even know her.
"Yeah," another friend of hers chimed in, "And there's the whole thing about Jay and what happened in the dining hall. You know, my sister dragged her off." Sister? Ah so that's Emily. "I know she's supposedly evil, but, I don't know... I'm on the fence about it. Maddi can normally make a good choice as to who she can trust. But Ivy was one of my friends, and if Luna took her somewhere or killed her even, I won't hesitate to turn on her."
"Look," Twilight says, "I don't care what you guys think, but Luna was one of my great friends and she honestly doesn't seem like she's changed that much."
"Key word; was." Monique stands from her place on the table, leaving Nekoette as the only one there. "Suit yourself Twi, but I'm not going anywhere near her."
Monique grabs her staff, a long-ish silver rod with a hook at the tip and a blue geode handing from it, and stalks out of the room. Temper much? Like any curious iso, I look up from my book, pretending that I didn't hear any of their conversation. I look over at Twilight with a curious, yet worried look.
"Is something wrong with Monique?" I ask Twilight with concern.
"Oh, don't worry about it," she responds, "She's just... been having a bad day."
She's not a very good liar, but sure, I'll pretend not to notice.
I nod and return to my work, scratching the next answer on the page.
So, Monique doesn't trust me. Well, neither does Nekoette, Charollette, Sarah, or Emily really, but Monique doesn't trust me so much as though to up and leave the room.
I scratch the next answer.
Is there anyone else like that? I don't see why there wouldn't be. After all, I'm supposed to be hiding some evil plan or dark magic or something like that.
My quill meets the parchment again as I begin to write the next answer.
But what if I am and I don't know it? There was that whole incident with my locket glowing in the treehouse. What was that even about anyway? It all happened so fast. We needed a way out, my locket glowed, a hole in the wall opened right in front of me, and... we got out. It makes no sense.
I finish the answer I'm on and go straight to the next one.
I wonder what Maddi thinks of what happened. Heck, what would Monique and anyone else think if they found out what happened. Grrr.
Luna. Pull yourself together. You don't need to keep filling your mind with these thoughts.
I know, I know. I just can't help it!
Yes. You. Can. Stop putting yourself down like this. It's not going to do any good.
Yes, but. *sigh* I don't know. I just feel like the entire world is against me.
Well, it's not. There's Maddi, and Jay, and heck Twilight! Also a few of your friends from fourth grade.
Like who?
Well, there's Liam, Danny, Emmalyn, Katelyn, maybe even Nick.
I haven't seen or heard from him in years. He's probably dead.
Really? Nick Heilbronn. Dead.
I don't know!! He could be!!
Probably another one of your victims, ay?
Grrr. I'm done with you.
I close my book, having unconsciously filled out every answer. I set it with the others on the table, sighing and staring up at the ceiling. It is decorated with several swirling patterns that are too detailed for my mind to comprehend. I stare at the ceiling, mesmerised, for what seems like forever, clearing my head of thoughts, when a curious brunette enters my vision. Maddi smiles at me as her fringe falls from behind her ear to in front of her face. I smile back.
"Actually make friends, Maddi?" I ask her.
"What?" she says, acting hurt, "You think I can't make any friends?"
We laugh. I know we literally met this morning, but we act like we've known each other forever. We act almost like sisters. Huh. Weird.
"Seriously though," I say sitting up, "Who did you end up meeting?"
"Well," the brunette thinks for a moment as she sits on the table next to my books, "I did meet a few people. I met Destiny and her friends, Georgia and her friends, and then there's Anneka, the girl we met in the hallway. Uh, I met Zeala, what's with her wings though?"
I winced at the question, remembering the red-head's more fire coloured wings. I've known Zeala since forever. We were actually in the orphanage together. We bonded like sisters, what with both of us being different and often bullied because of it. I smile softly as I reminisce on the fun memories with her. I return to reality to find an expectant Maddi still staring at me.
"I think that's something she would rather tell you," I respond simply. Maddi nods.
"Understandable. I mean, after what I've heard because of your wing colour."
"Don't remind me."
For the remainder of the evening, we sit there just talking. Not about anything in particular, but, it's comforting. Just the two of us talking and not caring about anything. Not the rumours, not school, nothing. It's nice. Not to have a care in the world. I hope it won't change, but somehow, I know it will.
~~Le PoV Switch~~
I walk purposefully through the hallways of the girls' dorms. Trusting Luna. How could she be confident trusting Luna? She's obviously evil! She just... I'm part witch, and she gives me a bad vibe. That says something. On earth, witches aren't always trusted by humans. My green eyes glow as I stalk the hallways, realising I didn't know where I was going. Oh well. I keep walking. Where ever my feet take me, I guess.
I walk up several flights of stairs, my silver staff in hand. I no time, I find myself on the roof of the building. Why the roof? Why did my instincts take me to the roof? None the less, I prop my staff up against one of the wooden posts that holds up the awning next to the door, or well, window, that isos use to get up here before walking down the slightly steep roof tiles. Just before I reach the edge, I sit, allowing my legs to dangle off the side of the building.
A cold wind blows. I wrap my blue-tinted wings around my body to keep myself warm. Alone with my thoughts. I think. Finally.
Or so you thought.
Huh?
Yeah, see the thing is, I'm here too.
W-who are you? What are you doing in my head?
I don't know.
What do you mean you 'don't know'?!
I just don't know! I'm usually thrown into people's minds when they have something troubling them. Turns out tonight I'm in your head.
So... do you have a name?
No. No I don't. I can hear the sarcasm from a mile away. Of course I do! I'm Leiko.
Monique. Nice to meet you Leiko.
You too Monique. So, are you human?
What? What do you mean?
Y'know. The world is full of different species. Like me! I'm a meif'wa.
A meif'wa? So, like a cat-person?
Well, that's one way to put it.
Sorry. Was that offensive.
Not to me, but it might be to other meif'wa. Just be careful when you meet another one.
Got it. Well, I'm an iso.
A what?
Ah. So, you've never heard of my kind before.
Nope. Never.
Understandable. I don't think there's many of us on earth, if any at all.
So, you're from, like, a distant planet... or something?
I laugh aloud into the night. Not really. We spend our time in the clouds.
Ah. I see. There's an awkward silence before Leiko says something else. So, is there anything on your mind? Anything you might want to talk to someone about?
Maybe... I start explaining my situation. Twilight and the others. Luna. My suspicions with the new girl. Luna... him.
Wow. Your life is one hell of a mess!
Right?
*sigh* So how much exactly do you hate this, 'Luna' girl?
I don't hate her exactly. I'm just... wary of her.
Uh-huh. Totally.
"Hey!" I say aloud on accident.
Woah, woah! Don't get yourself caught!
Right, right. Sorry.
Don't be sorry for me! Be sorry for yourself.
I roll my eyes. Whoever this person is, they are absolutely annoying. It's hilarious. I return to my conversation with the telepathic meif'wa.
I just wish there was a way I could see this Luna.
Maybe there is.
Huh?
Tell me, Leiko. How strong is this magic of yours?
