Chapter 4
I listen through the log walls of the treehouse in the Tree of Life or Something. Three pairs of wings now. Crap. I'm dead. We're both dead. So very dead. I peek out the window to see Hanna fixing her long, strawberry blonde braid with a green hair-tie in mid-air. Sunset flies into view, grabbing her arm and dragging her back to the trunk of the tree, mumbling something to the twins. I turn to look at Maddi, who has now taken to pacing the floor of the treehouse.
"We have to find a way out," she says, frustrated, but quiet. "A way out that is not the front door."
I fiddle with my locket as I think about it, wondering if there is any other way out of the small building. This is the first time I've been up here, so I don't know it that well. I'm just about to give up and propose that we just pretend to be asleep, when I feel a warm glow from my hands.
"What the--?" I question, looking down at the open palms of my hands. The locket is glowing a soft, purple colour. It lifts into the air with the cord still around my neck. Maddi and I look at it inquisitively, completely forgetting that we were trying to find a way to leave the treehouse.
Suddenly, the heart locket jerks forward, almost choking me in the process. I stumble forward and almost run into a wall as I full, not so gracefully to my knees. Maddi kneels down next to me and asks if I'm okay. I say that I am. The necklace hangs back normally but still glows.
Slowly, I rub my head then place it limply against the wall in front of me. Then I hear a quiet noise as the ranch moves away, creating a small gap in the wall, not very large, but small enough to fit an adult iso if they crawled through. This might be our ticket out. It only leads outside. I close my slightly opened wings and attempt to slide out feet first.
I land on the ground at the base of the trunk. I look round the side for Sunset and the twins. They are hovering by the branch Maddi and I landed on before entering the treehouse. I look up at the gap and beckon for Maddi to jump down. She swears silently before trying to figure out a way to jump down safely.
'Hurry!' I sign.
Maddi lifts an arm to hold onto the top of the gap between the branches. Just before she squeezes through, I notice some black ink on her raised arm next to her armpit just under her sleeve. Two curved lines, the top one longer than the bottom one, that come together at a point on the right. Before I can examine it any further, Maddi jumps down, landing on her feet, stumbling a bit and falling forward.
Swiftly, I put out my arms to catch her. She falls not so gracefully to her knees, but doesn't land hard. She just barely touches the ground. She looks up at me, her eyes locked on mine. She blushes slightly in embarrassment.
"You okay?" I ask letting go of her, "That was quite a fall."
"You landed it!" Maddi says quietly, yet angrily.
"That's 'cause I have experience there. I've always been jumping around."
"Parkour."
"What?"
"Parkour! That's what humans call it."
There's a slight awkward pause before I suggested that we get the heck out of the area before Sunset and the twins notice that we were even in the treehouse. Before we leave I turn and look at the place where the gap was. It's gone.
~~Time skip because I'm lazy~~
Maddi and I walk down the hall of the girls' dorm rooms at the end of the day. The halls are quiet, as they usually are at this time of day. Most of the girls are in the foyer of the dorms chatting and doing homework. I would be there too, but Maddi wanted me to come with her to find her dorm. She chants quietly the numbers on the doors as we pass them.
"306. 307. 308. 309..." she whispers.
"What number is your dorm room Maddi?" I ask.
"317," she states confidently.
"Oh, well, that's the same room as me."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah."
"Sweet."
"Here, follow me," I say as I spread my wings and push off the ground and down the hall. Maddi does the same.
We reach our dorm in no time. I notice that there are two suitcases stacked neatly outside the door. They weren't here this morning, but one of the faculty members must have brought it here later. After I got to my first class. Maddi picks up one of the suitcases as I use the silver key in my pocket to unlock the door. I open it and hold it so Maddi can drag her bag into the room before grabbing the other and dragging it in as well. I close the door after me.
Maddi is looking around the room. She looks at the empty bed, then at the wardrobe, then the mirror, then my bed, then at the desk, then the calendar, then at me.
"So," I say, "What do you think?"
"Well," Maddi starts, "It's a lot better than my dorm at the last school I went to. You have this room to yourself."
"Well I did, no one wanted to room with me. Everyone who did actually went to the head of college and asked to change to another dorm."
"Oh. Wow. Rude much?"
I laugh slightly before looking out the window. There is a slight pause before I whisper, "They do have a good reason to do it though..."
"What was that?"
"Oh, heh! Nothing."
"Okay. Well can you help me unpack then? I want to go down to the foyer to maybe meet some other people."
"Okay then."
Maddi and I take a suitcase each and begin to unpack her things. I put an array of clothing in the wardrobe along with mine and Maddi starts by laying her bedsheets on her bed how she desires. We spend about five minutes unpacking in silence, until I break it.
"So, I didn't know you could speak sign language," I say inquisitively.
"Oh, yeah," she acknowledges, "One of my friends is mute so, she can hear, but has to talk using sign language. I took the audacity to learn it for her. What about you?"
"Me?"
"Yeah. You can speak sign language too. Why'd you learn it?"
"I actually learned it so I could talk to a friend's dad in fourth grade. He was deaf, and I didn't want to give his son the trouble of translating everything I said to him."
"Ah!" Maddi says in understanding.
"I also noticed your tattoo," I bring up.
"My what?"
"Your tattoo. You have one here." I lift up my arm and point to where I saw Maddi's tattoo when she was leaving the treehouse.
"Oh. Yeah. That. Uh..."
"Does it mean anything?" I ask, bringing down my arm.
"Uh, yes actually." She lifts her arm showing me the tattoo. "It's supposed to look like an eye. You see it?"
I take a closer look at the black ink. It does actually look like an eye. Just without the iris or pupil. Just eyeliner. I nod in response.
"It's supposed to mean 'the future is unseen.' Deep, right?" Maddi concludes, bringing down her arm and fixing her sleeve.
"Yeah actually," I say as I finish putting her text books on a small, wall-mounted row of shelves. "Okay. Done."
"Great, let's go to the foyer now."
I grab some of my books and put them in my bag before nodding and heading towards the door. We walk along the almost empty hall, ignoring the cautious glances the other isos shoot in our direction and head towards the foyer. We pass another iso with red streaks through her silvery wings. She has her wavy brown hair in a low braid tied together with a red ribbon. She seems lost.
"Hey," Maddi says stopping in her tracks, me shortly after her, "Do you need any help?"
"Oh," the girl says, a little startled, "Yes. Please. Do you know where room 413 is?"
"Yes actually," I pitch in, "Just continue along this corridor until you reach the stairs, they will be on the left. Then make the first left at the top of the stairs near room 390. Continue until you get to room 410. Then turn right. Your room would be the third on the right."
"Okay. Straight, left, 390, left, 410, right," the girl repeats, "Got it. Thank you. My name's Anneka, by the way."
"Luna, and this is Maddi."
"Nice to meet you. Now, sorry to cut this short, but I gotta run. See you 'round Luna and Maddi!"
We watch as Anneka runs off in the direction I pointed her towards. She turns left at the stairs and takes off from the ground. Relatable. I look over at Maddi. Her eyes are trained exactly where Anneka disappeared. She seems angry. No, scared. Wait. Maybe... no. She just seems to be... focused towards that area over there.
"Come on, Maddi," I say, interrupting my own thoughts, "Foyer's this way."
"Coming." Maddi turns away until it is physically impossible for her eyes to be trained in that location any longer. Something is up. And I don't know why, but I almost feel more alive than ever.

Back! I never know what to put in these A/Ns. When my life actually has something going on I guess I'll write something here.
Oh! I'll try to publish two chapters every Sunday from now. I'll see how that goes for me. If not I'll just go back to publishing one each Sunday.
Well that's all for now, wolves. Byee!~
