Chapter 45: Gospel of Dismay

The ninja stood to the side as Garmadon began to train Lloyd. They were fighting each other as he shouted at him.

"This is terrible!" Garmadon shouts. "Spin!"

"What happened to kind and patient?" Nya whispers to Kai.

"How can you be doing it so wrong?" Garmadon stomps his foot "The Oni Form comes from within! You must embrace all your emotions, your anger and frustration, and then release it!"

Lloyd does acrobatics across the cave

"No, no! You're doing it with your body, but not with your mind!" Garmadon yells.

"With my mind?" Lloyd looks confused.

"Yes! With the connection between your mind and soul! The inside of your personal reality! You must find it, feel it, and crush it! Only when you have conquered your inner form, can you control your outer form! Now try again! Assume your Oni stance, and spin!" Garmadon points at him, Lloyd does so and Garmadon stares at him. "Somehow that was more terrible. How are you not getting this? It's so simple!"

"Simmer down, 'Master' Garmadon. He's doing exactly what you said!" Jay intervenes looking annoyed.

"You keep changing the rules, saying different stuff!" Cole growls.

"I don't think he has any clue how to achieve Oni Form," Kai mutters.

"Wrong!" Garmadon shouts "You must give up control and give in to your rage! Then channel it through your face! All things have an opposite. If you wish to achieve Oni Form, you must do the opposite of what you have been taught."

Wu gasps "That's it!"

"Yes, that's what I just said." Garmadon turns to him.

"No, not that." Wu shakes his head "You said all things have an opposite, and you are correct."

"About what Sensei?" Nya asks.

"If there is an all-powerful Oni Form on one side of the spectrum, perhaps there is an all-powerful Dragon Form on the other." Wu explains "Misako is still at the library in Domu. Perhaps she can help us with this research. P.I.X.A.L., I could use your help to reach her."

"Good! Go!" Garmadon waves them off "Maybe we'll get somewhere when the backseat drivers are gone." He turns to Lloyd "Back to work! And remember, you must unleash your anger! Channel it!"

-

Aria followed the mysterious ghost through the underworld, frequently wanting to be pulled in another direction, but was refocused by him quickly.

"If you're not careful, you'll get sucked in here." He tells her. "You need to focus more."

"I don't really know what I'm focusing on though," Aria says.

"Focus on anything," he turns to her. "Anything at all and mindlessly follow me. You just need something to hold onto, so you don't lose your way."

He turns back around and continues moving forward, Aria thought for a second before starting to hum again. The ghost smiles slightly, listening to her humming. After a bit he stops and turns to her.

"What are you humming?" He asks.

"I don't know," Aria replies with a shrug. "It's just stuck in my head."

"...it's called the Gospel of Dismay," He replies as he turns back around. "You wrote it."

"Did I?" Aria tilts her head as she quickly follows after him. "Oh yeah... I was an Idol, wasn't I?"

"Yes, you were- still are." He says, "You're not dead yet."

"...so.. you know a lot about me," Aria says.

"Not really," He replies. "More like I was another voice in your head. I guess you could say I used to be a tormentor of some kind... but I was also a friend."

"A friend?" Aria questions.

"I would like to think I am now," he says as he turns a corner.

Aria was about to continue walking forward when he grabs her and pulls her down the right path.

"We're almost there," he tells her. "Focus."

Aria began humming again as she followed after him.

-

"No, no, no! Terrible times infinity!"

At the Samurai X Cave, Garmadon continued to train Lloyd.

"I would have an easier time teaching dogs how to speak! I've been to the Realm of Madness, the Underworld, the Cursed, the Departed Realm. But I have never found myself in a situation more hopeless than this!" Garmadon shouts at Lloyd "It's like you want Ninjago to fall to the Overlord! No wonder Aria would rather stay in the underworld with a boyfriend as pathetic as you!"

Furious, Lloyd's hands glow with purple energy.

 "Uh, Lloyd?" Cole calls out.

"Your hands are purple!" Kai adds.

Panicked, Lloyd shakes his hands and the purple energy disappears.

"What are you doing? Don't stop!" Garmadon growls "I'm trying to save your miserable city from the Overlord himself! And at the first sign of success, you lose your nerve?"

"He is doing his best, brother," Wu says.

"His best is inadequate! It's clear you've been too soft on him." Garmadon points at Wu "You are a poor teacher."

"I knew bringing you here was a terrible idea!" Lloyd walks up "But you just went too far!"

"Yeah! Nobody insults Master Wu!" Cole growls.

"We are wasting valuable time!" Zane intervenes "Our city is being overrun while we argue."

"Yeah! Enough of this nonsense, we need to get out there and save everyone the old-fashioned way." Cole says "With smarts and ninja skills."

"Logically, I must concur." Zane agrees "Every second we delay reduces the chances of our victory by —"

"So be it!" Garmadon crosses his arms "Despite the brilliance of my instruction, it is apparent to me that some people simply cannot be helped. But tell me. Inform my ignorance. How are you going to defeat an enemy whose very existence mutes your elemental powers and renders your vehicles useless?"

"With these!" P.I.X.A.L raises platforms with the ninja's vehicles. "I have coated the vehicles in a nanotech polymer designed to withstand the energy-draining properties of the crystals. The crystals emit a form of radiation that disrupts electrical systems. I have shielded against it. Instead of being drained, the Crystal Temple will actually provide a power boost."

"Oh, this is so much better than poorly taught Oni Form classes!" Jay looks excitedly.

"The increased power should also augment your weapons systems, allowing for more effective combat." P.I.X.A.L adds "But please do not use the power boost too often, or you risk your vehicles burning out."

"Hmm, small concern about burning out our engines versus saving everything that's important to us?" Cole jumps up "That's a risk I'm willing to take!"

"Alright, then." Lloyd nods "I gave Oni Form a chance-"

"Debatable," Garmadon mutters.

"Looks like this is our only solution." Lloyd jumps into his vehicle "Ninja, go!"

As the ninja drive away in their new vehicles, Garmadon turns to Wu.

"You realize they do not stand a chance, don't you?" Garmadon questions.

"Let's just hope, Zero and Mistake are successful in their endeavors," Wu sighs. "We need Aria more than ever, after all, this is her father."

-

Aria has been following the ghost through the maze for a while when she stopped humming. A ghost in the distance caught her attention. The male ghost went to grab her when she started walking towards the other ghost. Aria pushed him off and went towards the other ghost.

Aria stopped in front of the female ghost that was crouched down on the ground crying. Aria waves her hand in front of her.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Aria asks.

The ghost looks up and Aria somehow recognized her immediately, it was Reika. Who also, immediately recognized the idol.

"A-Aria.." Reika looks surprised as her eyes filled up. "No, what have I done?"

"Reika, what are you doing here?" Aria asks. "Did you die? How, when?"

"I did something horrible," Reika answers, covering her face. "I-I brought back the Overlord, your father." Aria's eyes widened. "He told me he wanted to be reunited with his daughter and help me take revenge on the city for what they did to you. I was so stupid, I never should've-"

Reika was cut off by Aria hugging her, as the male ghost approached the two.

"It's okay," Aria tells her.

"She's faded," the male ghost speaks.

"Faded?" Aria questions as Reika wipes her tears.

"It means she can still be brought back to the living," He explains. "Her body is still breathing, she's almost dead."

"Then we can take her with us, can't we?" Aria asks.

"No," Reika shakes her head. "After what I've done, I don't deserve to live." She looks up at Aria. "I would've been here a long time ago if it wasn't for you... so I'm okay... with this. I just wish, I didn't leave such a mess."

Aria holds her hand out to Reika; Reika looks up at her confused.

"I wouldn't have had the courage to get back out on the stage if it wasn't for you," Aria tells her with a small smile. "You didn't leave me at my worst, so I'm not leaving you now. Let's go home, together."

Reika's eyes water as she reaches up and takes Aria's hand "Okay."

The two follow the male ghost, arm in arm as Aria hums.

"I'm curious," Aria turns to Reika "What was the first song of mine that you listened to?"

Reika smiles "The Gospel of Dismay."
